I saw them at least 30 times for free at the Electric Circus concert pool hall owned by Denny McLain ex 31 game winning pitcher for the Detroit Tigers played on 1968 World Series winning team. John Rusty was the drummer in those days. They played the Michigan Palace many times never more than 5 bucks. They backed up Kiss twice, at the Palace in Detroit, Michigan.
Old Head, that "book" is the official Tour book, which I have a copy because I went to see them (twice) back in the day! That's one of the things I loved about each tour was getting my tour book along with a tee shirt (if I could afford it) from each show! I've still got all of them, since I saw a show (at least one) on every tour. I only lost my Grace Under Pressure tour book, somehow, and I still miss it! Those were great fun days! I was 13 when I discovered Rush, back in 1976 - 1977, and 14 when I first saw them (Dec 1977).
March 24 concert was my first. I was 17. They played all or parts of everything up to that point. Even Hemispheres, which makes any guitar, bas or drummer trying to play it weep. Unbelievable I can get the live from the floor version of the best concert I ever attended!
I was just thinking about how special this recording must be for people who were there. I'm seriously chuffed for you that you get to hear this. I wonder if you have any "deja vu" moments when listening to it, like "I remember Geddy playing that note wrong!"
Very Cool Unboxing Video dude! An outstanding record from an outstanding band. I was at the Maple Leaf Garden show on the 25th of March 1981. It was the very first concert I ever attended, I was 13 and on March break during Grade 8. It was spectacular. Looking forward to getting my box set soon. Enjoy!!
I too was there. First time in MLG as well. I was seated in the Reds, on the blue line closer to the stage on Alex's side about 3/4 the way up. Awesome show . FM as the opener were good as well .
Ordered this too. This is getting ridiculously expensive. - Rush 40th Boxset - $96.43 - 2112 40th Boxset - $143.91 - A Farwell To KIngs 40th Boxset - $168.67 - Hemispheres 40th Boxset - $$130.00 - Permanent Waves 40th Boxset - $203.88 - Moving Pictures 40th Boxset - $324-06 I understand no one held a gun to my head to purchase this, but there seems to be a pattern with the prices. This will probably the last Rush Boxset purchased (besides I only listen to Terry Brown produced Rush). Regards
@@youtoo2233 Great question. Terry was always about rocknroll beat while always letting the boys grow and progress. Unfortunately, Geddy was pushing the band in a new wave synth style. Bringing the keyboards to a more central instrument. Which Alex was not happy with, and Terry was able to work with once - Signals album. So Rush decide to try another producer for Grace Under Pressure. I remember picking up GUP in '84. I was like "WTF is this shit". Rush for the rest of the 80s produced mostly God Awful crap. Returning to their roots with Roll The Bone. Again - my opinion. Regards
I've listened to the Live in YYZ about 8x already. My first impression was how good it sounds. I actually went back and listened to Exit... just to compare and really there's no comparison. Live in YYZ is far superior in my opinion. I think the RUSH team did an outstanding job with the audio and really gives you the feel of being there. I don't think any RUSH fan would be disappointed in the Live in YYZ. Lol going to go listen to it again right now 😉 Long live RUSH! 👍🎸🎹🥁🎶🎶🔊👂🧠😁😊😍
I'm listening to my 3-CD copy right now...OMG. Ok, the album, Moving Pictures, sounds beautiful (although it's close to midnight here at my apartment and I'm only semi-cranking it), which is what you would expect. I love this album, so that's great. BUT...that Live in YYZ 1981 set...WOW!! What an effing concert!! They were shit-hot back then and that 3rd night in Toronto was a blister-fest! They were so on their game and the recording is superb! Neil's drum solo is MONSTER and Alex's playing on La Villa is insane! Only a couple hiccups -- Neil dropped a stick during The Trees and Alex played a couple wrong notes at the beginning of Grande Finale (both oops were quickly rectified, natch) -- but the rest of the set was freaking flawless! I've spent so much time with their newer live CDs and DVDs that I haven't listened to Exit, Stage Left in such a long time. Well, I'm kind of glad I didn't because it made listening to Live in YYZ 1981 so much more impactful. I"m just blown away, all over again! It was fun listening to it while reading the great testimonials from the different musician friends of the band, in the booklet. I'm psyched!
As a neat curio, during the performance of The Trees and Xanadu, they left Neil's countdown in the mix and put it up front. So, during The Trees, Neil shouts "...4, 5, 6!" and before the big finish in Xanadu, Neil shouts "YEAH!" Nice. Another neat thing about Xanadu, the Oberheim synth washes are very pronounced and add a beautiful soundscape to the performance. Geddy's bass thunders like a herd of buffalo. Alex's guitar is raw and a sonic freak out. Don't get me going on Neil's drum solo during YYZ -- it's fast, powerful, and tasty.
Wow - the super deluxe box set looks very cool. I think I will go with the smaller deluxe set which has all the vinyl but excludes many of the extras (and it’s significantly cheaper 😀). Have a good weekend.
I might have to pick this up. I attended the show on the 25th(the one they give you the ticket), still have the original ticket stub somewhere...I should find it. Nice unboxing!
RUSH is in my top 5 of all time. I can listen to RUSH any day, anytime. I think the first RUSH song I heard was either Red Bachetta or the live version of A Passage to Bangkok. I was immediately taken. Then came Tom Sawyer and Subdivisions… good memories.

I wouldn't be surprised if those were copies of the actual lyric sheets that Neil submitted. I recall Matt Scannell describing lyrics Neil submitted to him that had a little story board and some calligraphy. Plus, you can find the Fly By Night lyrics online that look similar.
Those lyric sheets are reprints of Neil’s original lyric sheets. He would do all that art work to go along with the lyrics. Having those is alone makes the box set worth that price. Amazing.
Thank you! My boy doesn't seem to understand how cool that is! Hey, I would love to see anniversary box set of Fly By Night just so we could get Neil Peart lyric sheets from it and albums like Caress of Steel! I love that he used to stylize his finished lyrics like that. Just another tastee treasure from back in the day!
