About the "random" extended jumps you do in Jet Set Radio, its based on your speed. If you hit a certain top speed, your skates will leave a glowy trail. Once you jump while your skates glow, you can do an extended jump. However in the Steam port, the glowing graphic is broken in any resolution above 720p, making it seem more unpredictable to someone unaware of the existence of the effect.
I have my copy of the first game with me right here. The manual says: "Get the Graffiti Soul items scattered around the street and increase your selection of graffiti designs. Extra graffiti designs will be listed under the Graffiti List. You must clear the mission you are on before you are able to use the new graffiti design."
To me the problem lies less with the character controls and more the collision and level design. I remember there being moments where my character would trip on literally nothing and while the levels do flow, it's laid out in a way similar to Sonic CD where you have to figure out the good path amidst a huge cluster of junk that actively hampers your movement. You could definitely argue that they could've had movement that accommodated the levels more, but I found myself fighting with the levels themselves more and I feel like if you just put the character in an empty field they would feel just fine.
Between the leaks, Spiritual successors like Butterflies and BRC, and even Pizza Tower in a way (the OST uses a lot of the same samples) this is shaping up to be *the* year for fans of Hideki Naganuma and JSR.

-Doesn't know how to play the game. -Refuses to learn when game tries to teach them -Says game is supposedly clunky. -Also forgets what a momentum based platformer is altogether Maybe people don't talk about Jet Set Radio's unique and clever gameplay and level design because it goes without saying. Also, the camera is a problem and jumping off a rail at low speed is lame. But that's that.
I'd like to point out that the analog stick being strange is a direct byproduct of the PC port. Similarly to how rail grinding in SA2 is broken in it's PC port, SEGA didn't map the analog stick properly to allow fine movements like the original games for these dreamcast ports. The snapping in one of 3 directions when jumping from rails thing is because of this. If you play the original games of these ports through an emulator or on real hardware, you'd see that they allow for generally finer movements than SEGA ported to newer consoles/PC.
Completely agree with you, Bombrush cyberfunk comes out in a few hours, hopefully it evolves this formula to something amazing, from what we saw in two years its looking fantastic, great review Pariah

Not to be pedantic but Naganuma only did 2 songs for air gear and 3 for bomb rush. Everyone should still check them out (particularly air gear) but he did very little music for both overall.
I think the Original JSR is just misunderstood and overshadowed by it's easier to play brother. I feel like it shines on the 3rd playthrough when you aim for the Jet ranks and finally grasp the controls. It usually takes 1 playthrough to "get it" and 2 to get better at it. PS: you do tricks when you hit what I like to call "3rd gear." this usually happens when going down a slope, or, when you go fast on a rail (running to a rail then waiting like 0.5 seconds usually guarantees a trick). Graffiti Souls unlock new Graffiti. It's next to the options menu In JSR. In JSRF you have to talk to the Robot Boy and press the arrow that looks like a back button. Very counter intuitive. It's a shame they never did something like that...
Seeing that you’re still using the starter tags, the Het Souls unlock new graffiti - there’s a option in the GG menu hub which you can change out your tags and create your own (MS paint style/ or upload photos).
As a note for the original JSR, getting all Jet ranks on the story missions in a region of Tokyo-To unlocks its respective gang. Jet ranking the two Grind City story missions unlocks Gouji Rokkaku. Once all story missions are Jet ranked, start the game again on the same save file, and beat the chapter 1 missions in the order that gets Pots kidnapped by the Noise Tanks. After Chapter 2 finishes, you'll be challenged to unlock "???."
Hopefully you'll play Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, I love JSR and JSRF to death but so far with a couple hours in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk the movement is so much better, the game is definitely GAMEPLAY first, style second but both are excellent aspects so far.
This game is something I never actually played, but I think it looks cool. Its one of those games I wanted to play, but I was hesitant considering I was never very good at skating/skateboard games.
ain't no way you got graffiti souls and never changed the grafitti, did you not look around in the menu? Like no ill will here I'm just surprised, picking and choosing the grafitti I like the most is one of the more fun parts for me
I may not agree with all of your points about Future and the OG but I heavily agree with that these games have a lot of potential to be way better in a new game, hopefully the new reboot (if it exists) will improve on the core gameplay and make it better than the last two games, if not then we at least have Bomb Rush Cyberfunk to look forward to.
as someone who got on JSR a little late, my first game in the series being the HD rerelease, JSRF basically achieved this mythical status in my mind due to its inaccessibility for so long. In the past few years, Xbox emulation went from shit quality to playable quality, I finally got to play it after listening to both games' soundtracks for like ever. Yeah I was really fucking disappointed with JSRF compared to the first game because of the problems that you describe. I still see how it's very special and the art means a lot and leaves a strong positive impression but damn I got to that vertical sewer level and gave up for now
I was ina similar situation where JSRF seemed so cool and elusive but when I finally played it, the level design was not as good as the first at sometimes straight up annoying. Otherwise it was still a fun game overall and more Jet Set Radio content anyways.
Seeing you release videos for a series or genre that's about to get a new entry is great at building hype for a video covering that new entry. First Pikmin and now JSR, I see what your're doing here ;)
Bombrush Cyberfunk soon bros! I'm so excited!! JSR is an amazing arcade/action masterpiece all around while Future is a way more shallow and casual collecting game. I was always disappointed with Future honestly and I hope Cyberfunk will be more like the original JSR!
Lmfao I've been getting recomended Jetset radio adjacent videos and trailers for Bombrush Cyberfunk by team reptile and then this comes out. I think the universe is trying to tell me something. 😱🤔
16:20 bro... those are your new graffitis. You can choose new ones in the graffiti menu after you collect them. I was excited to see you review these games but I'm surprised to see so much harsh words for JSR. I guess I'm nostalgic about it, but I replayed it recently and I still think it's a very solid arcade game with good gameplay with just enough action and map/tricks challenges to keep you entertained. And a much better game than JSRF.
I emulated Jet set Radio onto my phone with a Dreamcast emulator, and I, like everyone else, loove the style and music. But gosh, the mechanics are so clunky…. Especially getting those red arrows at really difficult spots kills me lol
I feel like the OG JSR was meant to be more of an arcade title. I don’t think it’s that far fetched, considering the SEGA Naomi board is similar enough to a Dreamcast.
I played a Jet Set Radio inspired game called "butterflies" and the controls are worst. When you try to turn around, you literally walk backwards unless you press a button that MAKES YOU TURN AROUND.
JSR and JSRF both have pros and cons the other game doesn't have and it drives me nuts. JSR looks nicer, but JSRF has better controls, but JSR's mission structure feels more consistent, but JSRF has a better graffiti system, but JSR is more replayable, but JSRF has more modes, but you don't have to backtrack across half the city in JSR just to progress- whenever I'm playing one of these games, the irritations of the one I'm playing makes me wish I was playing the other one. I'm really hoping that the third game has Smilebit/Team Andromeda alumni as well as fans-turned-developers, maybe bring in some guys from Team Reptile since Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is like 90% done, or get the guys from HOVER Revolt of Gamers. Do a Sonic Mania thing, combining experienced devs and passionate people to create style AND substance. I will say though in regards to the first one's weird trick jumps, that has to do with speed. If you're at the speed of a boost, you'll trick, even if you didn't boost beforehand. So if you want to avoid the trick jump, slow down a bit before jumping, and if you want to intentionally trick jump, boost or go downhill before jumping
You said it perfectly. If they could take the best parts of each we'd have the best in the series. I hope whatever sega has planned will take some notes from bomb rush as well as more quality of life improvements.
Getting used to the mechanics, dealing with the quips and quirks, and overcoming rubbish game design is what makes for the perfect gameplay experience and in my soul thats factual science. Learning and mastering JSR/Future is a feeling of adaptability, and compitence that is unmatched by another platformer. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is basically your fever dream seeing how you describe JSR. Cleaner gameplay with music that generally fits with modern society. However, there is no replicating the essence and gameplay loop of JSR. The artstyle, mechanics, music, the ambition and risks…. The unique identity this game has means the game is immortal, whether or not the game is seen as good or bad.
31:12 i was playing jet set radio today via emulation that same thing was in the first game on the dreamcast lol i was confused as to how the camera wasn't locking onto those quick graffiti spots in your gameplay and now i think that's a pc port qol improvement
I got a copy of Jet Set Radio with my Dreamcast and I know exactly what the problem with the controls is: the characters are quite heavy and there's little to no mid-air control. Everything is laggy, and the game running at 30 frames per second doesn't help matters.
I completely blocked the roller-coaster level from my memory and seeing it again brings back so much pain lol. And don't even get me started on that later all vertical level, I think it was a garbage dump? Fucking painful lol. But still good games that I enjoy. Good thing we have Bomb Rush now
I def get what you mean about the awkwardness, especially in the first one but I honestly don't think its THAT bad, and I think they're both fantastic games. I'd say you get used to it after like the first level and after that I think it's easy to get the hang of the movements and get a good flow. Jet Set Radio is meant to be a difficult game, so I don't mind some of the stuff that makes it harder like the grinding speed and if anything I think it encourages more strategic playing. Same with JSRF and the level design, although i'll admit the camera is annoying sometimes, and the combat while harmless mostly except for bosses in terms of difficulty is a pace breaker. That boss with the mayor of Tokyo still haunts my dreams. My biggest issue with the first one mostly is the input lag that fucks me over sometimes.
Hey i just hacked my vita, any recommendations? Cant seem to get ps1 or psp games to work yet. I wanna play locoroco again, that would be a nice video, and i found an archive of every lbp fan level, so i wanna play those, the psp ones i have massive nostalgia for Also, i wanna eventually try the tony hawk series, but id love to see tony hawk reviews from you
i actually do enjoy trying to get jet ranks on all the levels in jsr. it requires you to map out the levels in your head, tag certain areas before others, and do tricks to try and score the most points possible. also the movement, even if its jank is really fun. also i hope ppl dont get mad at the style over substance title the game IS only 3 hours long. i didnt do that for jsrf tho
I've been going down the Jet Set Radio rabbit hole lately since I've been wanting more after finally getting a 100% save on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. Honestly really enjoyed the og JSR despite it's quirks, the arcade-y nature of the game and learning the controls and map layouts was very rewarding for me personally, I got used the clunky controls after a couple levels (f*ck Benten-Cho tho lmao, the game was NOT designed for that kind of vertical movement). that being said I can completely understand why you and other people don't like it, JSR can be really wacky sometimes. Still playing through JSRF currently but I'm having a blast so far and can't really complain at the moment
The JSR leaks were just footage of a JSR Colab in "Roller Champions." Sadly there is no evidence of a new upcoming game Oh well, at least we have Bomb Rush Cyberfunk!
I have the feeling that asides from licensing issues, JSRF probably hasn't had a re-release due to the terrible controls. We've been spoiled by Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It would be cool if Sega let Team Reptile remake JSRF and touch up a few things.
I think future had it down more, loved 90% of the music and the gameplay was very fun till you had about a quarter of the game left, also aesthetically better than the first in my opinion, though its a toss up for many
Some say sega cares for the fans. The thing is, they care for ONLY Sonic fans. Everyone else gets the bad end to the stick. Nights, jet set radio, rhythm thief, crazy taxi, daytona usa, etc. Every year, sega pumps another Sonic game to please the Sonic fandom and leave nothing for the rest. Sega doesn't care for their fans. They only care for the Sonic fans.
I remember back in twenty nineteen or twenty twenty when I purchased an new open box dream cast and ask around what titles to purchase jet set radio was one of the most ten titles I kept be recommended. To me after seen some game play and reading the reviews about it seems heavily floaty and clunky to me and the story was nonexistent so I past on it and never played it's sequal. Thanks to this heavy in depth video, I made the correct decision and the mention of that bomb rush title. I heard it is good also but it has it flaws too, I will also pass on that title also.
@@Luna-pk7gzIf what you are saying is true about future is acceptable, however most players also enjoy a steller story along side their great game play.
@Evixyn Both jet sets have fun stories imo. Just because it's not the last of us doesn't mean it isn't good. Dj professor k and gouji at the least should keep anybody engaged
I wouldn't play super mario games if he looked like ass either and the original is a masterpiece Also I like the gameplay in jsr even if its slow and controls like ass sometimes Jsrf on the other hand is amazing, even if graffiti is less interesting to do
16:05 They unlock Graffiti you can use, but I don't know anybody that doesn't use the default or their own so yeah they are pretty much worthless unless you are trying to 100% the game or are getting the achievements for getting the souls.
@@ellagage1256 Don't I recognize you from somewhere? And yeah, I think BRC did the implementation of different developer-made graffiti designs the best. Although I wish that custom graffiti was in vanilla BRC.
@@techy804 True vanilla custom graffiti feels pretty important for a game about street art being self-expression. Also maybe 🤔 might be from one of Pariah's other videos
@@ellagage1256 Yeah, just having UGC just makes the amount of fun you can have with any game skyrocket IMO. Also, I just looked through my YT comment history to see if I can see ya, it's from my BRC clip.
Trick jumping in the first game feels like jumping in a mach speed section in sonic 06, And sometimes steering to the side somtimes is as fast as thoose bad speed mods in some games that are fast as shit, also Now Im bored of all jet set radio games since I 100% the first, future, and bombrush cyberfunk
You hit the nail right on the head with Jet Set Radio Future. While the first game has crappy controls, it just feels fun to play even if you don't know what you're doing, so you end up wanting to learn it better. In Future, however, it's the exact opposite. I started out liking the game a lot because the controls were such a huge improvement over the first game. But then everything you mentioned in this video started to hit, the awkward camera, the forced combat, the weird graffiti, and ESPECIALLY the level design. Seriously, every single level past the first one feels like a huge middle finger to the player. I have no idea why they thought making the levels as linear and annoying as possible was a good idea. That's really how I can sum up Jet Set Radio Future: annoying. I would gladly replay any section of the original game, but I never want to replay that damn sewer level in Future.
the level design isn't that bad, it's honestly skill issues on both yours and Pariah's end. My brother in christ, Pariah did not hit the nail, he just lies in the video saying you can't find the noise tanks after you fall off, when in the fucking footage you see him pulling up the map telling you where they are. Just don't comment on things you have no clue on.
@@Luna-pk7gz The level design is definitely bad when in almost every level you have random dead ends, weird geometry, and only one path to progress. Sure you can say I'm just bad at the game, but having to replay a section of the level for the 10th time after falling off higher up is not fun. This also leads to me not wanting to try moves that are actually "fun" and "exciting" in fear of falling down to the beginning again. I don't hate Jet Set Radio Future, I actually did have fun playing it at times. It just feels like a lot of potential was lost.
it is painful to admit but he is right though its not like the game is carried entirely by stile and the gameplay is garbage no, jsr gameplay can be fun especially future, its just that it isnt as polished as someone might like while gameplay is good, great even at its peak the style of the game is near perfect those two thing arnt even close there is a huge gap between the quality of the gameplay and the style of the game
BRO!!! the game play makes wanna die 🤮🤮🤮 Sorry, but when I first played Jet Set Radio, I was playing it on a dream cast emulator on my phone called raicast, and I was playing better than that
Personally speaking, I find JSR and JSRF to both be really painful to play. Lacking the grind in JSR and the wonky AF controls throwing me about the place for no reason in JSRF, I basically gave up trying to finish both games (I did eventually push through and complete JSRF with a lot of rage). For me, the god awful controls dramatically kill it for me. If I can't control my character in a game than I wont like it at all. Yes JSR and JSRF and visually gorgeous even in 2023 and the soundtracks are bangers but gameplay is what I usually want in games. Kinda glad that graffiti was made simpler in JSRF but... yeah that camera shifting thing was a braidead idea. XD Oh and if you're curious as to what graffiti souls do, in both games they unlock new graffiti you can equip to change your sprays.

the fact that bomb rush cyberpunk launched a day after this is some great timing
Jet Set Radio is so aesthetically awesome. The art, the music, everything about it has a special place in my heart :]
i wish that more franchises tried to do stylish cel shading, sonic (especially the riders series) would look amazing with this style

Seeing you release videos for a series or genre that's about to get a new entry is great at building hype for a video covering that new entry. First Pikmin and now JSR, I see what your're doing here ;)
That and to warn the devs if they watch it about what to do better next time.
I think one could say the Style was the Substance.
JSR's style is it's substance, deal with it!
I believe that Graffiti Souls unlock new graffiti designs to equip
Bombrush Cyberfunk soon bros! I'm so excited!!
JSR is an amazing arcade/action masterpiece all around while Future is a way more shallow and casual collecting game. I was always disappointed with Future honestly and I hope Cyberfunk will be more like the original JSR!
Lmfao I've been getting recomended Jetset radio adjacent videos and trailers for Bombrush Cyberfunk by team reptile and then this comes out. I think the universe is trying to tell me something. 😱🤔
It can't be a coincidence he uploaded this when Bomb Rush comes out tomorrow.
There's a new improvement hack called Sonic Advance 2 SP.
WATCHING THIS FOR BOMB RUSH CYBERFUNK HYPE 6 HOURS LEFT
Makes me curious as to what your opinion on Wind Waker is.
I hope whatever sega has planned will take some notes from bomb rush as well as more quality of life improvements.
apart from bum rush cyberfunk i think the splatoon games also sort of carry alot of the essence of these games.
I learned of this game when i heard its music composer was the same music composer for sonic rush
Bomb rush cyber funk is the best game I’ve ever played
31:12
i was playing jet set radio today via emulation
that same thing was in the first game on the dreamcast lol
i was confused as to how the camera wasn't locking onto those quick graffiti spots in your gameplay and now i think that's a pc port qol improvement
Good thing we have Bomb Rush now
you really need to do bombshell cyberfunk when it releases next its basically jetset radio but waaaaaay better
nvm u mentiond it in the vid i didnt watch far enough xdd
I love the gameplay it's like geometry dash for me ;)
BOMB RUSH CYBERFUNK
Hot take but style over substance works more often than not
PlatinumGames titles are an example of Style But Not Enough Substance.
Hey i just hacked my vita, any recommendations? Cant seem to get ps1 or psp games to work yet. I wanna play locoroco again, that would be a nice video, and i found an archive of every lbp fan level, so i wanna play those, the psp ones i have massive nostalgia for
Also, i wanna eventually try the tony hawk series, but id love to see tony hawk reviews from you
Graffiti souls give you more artwork to put in your tags.
i actually do enjoy trying to get jet ranks on all the levels in jsr. it requires you to map out the levels in your head, tag certain areas before others, and do tricks to try and score the most points possible. also the movement, even if its jank is really fun. also i hope ppl dont get mad at the style over substance title the game IS only 3 hours long. i didnt do that for jsrf tho
Hey, as a JSR fan, I came for the style, but stayed for the gameplay.
The JSR leaks were just footage of a JSR Colab in "Roller Champions." Sadly there is no evidence of a new upcoming game
Oh well, at least we have Bomb Rush Cyberfunk!
lmao
this is one of the worst reviews for any 2 pieces of media I've ever seen, congratulations
I agree
Yeaaaah pariah
your sonic mod recommendations got to the front of /sthg/!
whats sthg? sonic the hedgehog "G"?
Wish my Xbox never had red ring of death miss playing future
Collecting graffiti souls unlocks new graffiti that you can use.
I have the feeling that asides from licensing issues, JSRF probably hasn't had a re-release due to the terrible controls. We've been spoiled by Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It would be cool if Sega let Team Reptile remake JSRF and touch up a few things.
If JSR can get a release then JSRF can as well, especially since Future has better controls imo
I think future had it down more, loved 90% of the music and the gameplay was very fun till you had about a quarter of the game left, also aesthetically better than the first in my opinion, though its a toss up for many
Question. Is there a Jet Set Radio Past?
JGR and Tony Hawk were developed concurrently. It is not a clone or copy at all the game design existed before Tony Hawk came out
Some say sega cares for the fans.
No no don't listen to this guy, JSRF's not that bad, this guy lies with even the footage contradicting it
also bruh story ? who cares just have fun with the game.
I wouldn't play super mario games if he looked like ass either and the original is a masterpiece
Also I like the gameplay in jsr even if its slow and controls like ass sometimes
Jsrf on the other hand is amazing, even if graffiti is less interesting to do
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a Jet Set Radio game with infinitely better controls
Shout out to brc for making jet set radio actually fun
16:05 They unlock Graffiti you can use, but I don't know anybody that doesn't use the default or their own so yeah they are pretty much worthless unless you are trying to 100% the game or are getting the achievements for getting the souls.
I just did both, some of my tags will. E custom and the others will be vanilla graffiti
@@techy804 Oh shit you're right! You were flexing that 6 star heat 😏
Trick jumping in the first game feels like jumping in a mach speed section in sonic 06, And sometimes steering to the side somtimes is as fast as thoose bad speed mods in some games that are fast as shit, also Now Im bored of all jet set radio games since I 100% the first, future, and bombrush cyberfunk
....Emo Philips does game reviews??....
bro, what is this gameplay footage?? XD you play like a 10 year old that just disocvered Tony Hawks Pro Skater
Good job at spending the first 5 minutes doing nothing but whining about Jet Set Radio. You really earned that downvote.
@@cycoooo just get good ig, it's not bad just don't fall off
Dude graffiti souls Gove you more graffiti options...
Man… I was really interested in playing these games but after watching this video, both games really kinda seem tedious to me….
it is painful to admit but he is right
though its not like the game is carried entirely by stile and the gameplay is garbage
no, jsr gameplay can be fun especially future, its just that it isnt as polished as someone might like
while gameplay is good, great even at its peak the style of the game is near perfect those two thing arnt even close
there is a huge gap between the quality of the gameplay and the style of the game
BRO!!! the game play makes wanna die 🤮🤮🤮
Sorry, but when I first played Jet Set Radio, I was playing it on a dream cast emulator on my phone called raicast, and I was playing better than that
Personally speaking, I find JSR and JSRF to both be really painful to play. XD
Oh and if you're curious as to what graffiti souls do, in both games they unlock new graffiti you can equip to change your sprays.
