Hi Imperial War Museums, I've read that the footage taken on D-Day - as orchestrated by John Ford's photographic operation - has never been fully released. I understand that the footage above was a mashup of footage taken on the day, seen as publicly palatable at that time. I understand that the full version was considered too graphic and only shown to Churchill and Eisenhower. Would anyone at the IWM be able to shed light on this missing or unreleased film shot on 6 June 1944?
6 June 2014. Remembering all the soldiers who died on D-day and the ones who bravely fought against the Nazis. Remembering my so much loved dad who got badly injured during the war (nothing to do with D-day though).
melvyn, roy, Runham: same here. My dad fought amongst the 1st wave that landed on omaha beach. He was among the greatest generation. We have a lot to be proud of.
At 6:30 "German fire dropped down Allied soldiers, but others kept on," the soldier on the left drops quickly and doesn't move for the remainder of the short clip. Upon closer expectation, it looks like his right lower leg disappears and he falls forward with his pack tumbling over his head. Simultaneously, one of the oblong objects in the background blinks out and then back, as if obscured by a puff of smoke. It looks like this man had a close hit from either a mortar or land mine. They must have been close to the bluffs because the man in the foreground was walking almost casually over slightly rougher landscape. Brave soldiers honored.
+me3tube without more information it is impossible to access the actual events occurring in the seven/eight seconds of footage. You will see at least 2 men in the water (possibly a few more who are deceased), who probably came ashore on the same craft, but were wounded before the men on the beach go down. Because everyone is going down at different times, I would suggest that they are victims of machine gun fire spraying that portion of the beach. the soldier with the leg hit, is likely a direct hit from machine gun fire. The puff of smoke you see is actually water spray from the other rounds that are missing (you can see the puffs of water spraying up before the man goes down). Try watching it at 1.25 speed (which I think is more accurate to begin with. Normal speed is too slow) and you will see the water spraying before he falls. The man in foreground probably can't hear anything going on behind him because of all the noise and is oblivious to the danger unfolding.

This was a year ago but I feel like I should reply. The footage taken was of the reinforcements, so they are safe from the German fire (from the pillboxes), but much like “the movies” you were referencing, I’m assuming saving private Ryan? Those were accurate, the 1st regiment and the other early regiments did face the hell depicted in the d-day scene of SPR. They of course couldn’t get many photos let alone videos in the first wave or else they would simply be gunned down. However the imagery of how much cover Omaha had in the movies is inaccurate. The beach was flat, no cover, so the allied soldiers either drowned (many of the boats dropped them off too early and they jumped in the water to avoid German fire, subsequently drowning due to the heavy equipment) or were simply getting blown to pieces by the machine guns at the top of the beach. Truly hell.
This is why we stand for our anthem. Out of respect for what these soldiers did for us. Willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. These guys had balls.
i wonder would it have been possible to drop a powerful explosive into a specific spot in the ocean to create a huge wave that would have cleaned up the shore a little?
How many were you expecting to see? Men were landing along the length of the coast across fice beaches over the course of many hours and directed inland off the beaches as soon as was practically possible to expand the bridgehead and make room for the following units to land. Some of the footage is from training exercises, but there's a limit to what individual cameramen can capture, just one part of a very large and heavily choreographed landing operation.
Really dude. They were charging on a beach, that is guarded by German artillery and pillboxes. Of course there is not gonna be that much soldiers. Most of them are dead
@@Nuuk_Nuke_Nook no, when people think of d day they think of Omaha beach, which was very well defended and had tons of attackers. But the rest of the areas invaded didn't have nearly as many defenders or attackers, which is the footage you see
