yo, i love your vids, man. I’m a tattoo apprentice, so its inspiring seeing your hustle. I was curious if you could do a video talking about how you got into tattooing? it be interesting to know your story. Keep up the great work, man.
I started my journey this month just learned where I live currently has a big market for tattooing, but I’ve always wanted to do something with art always had a thing for drawing since I was little and got into realism when I was in High school. hoping to do the same now in tattooing and getting income from my skills eventually
Invest in your equipment. Get a solid machine that is reliable and start practicing line work on fake skin. Don’t try to practice everything all at once… line work until it’s perfect. Then packing. Then shading. Tattoo slow because slow is smooth. Focus on building your skill set as quickly as possible. This will give you leverage to work at whatever shop you want. Best of luck bro!
You work at a shop or do you work out of a rented studio? Do you pay the shop monthly or do they take a percentage of every tattoo? Or do you literally get to keep all the money of every tattoo you do?
Depends on the location of the shop and how busy you are. Figure out about how much you’ll make each month in revenue with your current clientele and your shops walk in rate. Then if the rent is at the most 30% of your total revenue each month then I’d say that’s the way to go. If the rent is higher than that then I would suggest just getting on a percentage based pay scale. Find a shop where you can make 70-80% of your total revenue and you’ll be in a better spot than most artists.
No to the first question. It doesn’t quite work like that. If you’re an employee, then your pay is dictated by your boss. As tattoo artists, we dictate our own pay, which make us not an employee. Each artist can own their own business, LLC, and personal brand. Thats where shop rent comes in to play 👊🏼
