  • At the beginning of 2019 I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to be delivery crew on Rob Frayne's Sydney 38 for its journey back to Sydney after competing in the famed Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Of course I took a few cameras in an attempt to capture something of what was an absolutely incredible experience.

    Quality video.
You people are so brave, conquering the fear of those high seas must come from the confidence one can achieve from every trip.
I so wish that in my younger years I to had made those trips.

My brother has done the Syndey to Hobart a number of times, doing the return delivery to Melbourne. Thanks for a glimpse of the beauty of Tasmania & the joy and challenges of yachting from the safety of land!

Next time your brother races, you should volunteer for the return leg. I can highly recommend it.

Het herinnert mij aan onze wereldreis. In 2005 hebben wij van Sydney naar Hobart gevaren met een J/35.

Loved this. I did my first and only Sydney to Hobart a couple of years ago. I wondered what the trip back is like. Beautifully shot. Great stories.

Thanks Mark. It was a great trip, but if I'd done the race I'm not sure I would be as keen to get straight back in the boat for the return.

Great video, I loved the drone shots at sea. I've also been lucky enough to crew that trip in 2017 and 2020. The second crossing was hectic to say the least. There were moments when I was genuinely terrified but trusted the skipper (my cousin) and the boat (Love & War). Back in Sydney I said I probably wouldn't do it again. If it hadn't been for Covid I would have been back this year. Both times we stopped at Babel Island to wait for the window to cross, making for a stopover at Eden. In 2020 Eden was closed due to the bush fires and sailing up the coast was very smokey at times. As you rightly say, an incredible experience.

What a beautiful boat, and with a great history too. We were going to stop at Flinders which would have been nice but it meant we would have missed our window. next time... That 2020 trip must have been eerie with the smoke!

Very well put together, but how bazar is it that you need SSSC, 2 first aid, preferred yachtmaster/coastal etc quals, and a whole bunch of safety gear and radio skeds to compete in the race south, then without any reason, you can load your boat full of backpackers and start north - go figure. Well sailed Bruce.

Thanks heaps. I shot most of it a sony a7sII, with some gopro 7 footage as well. And the drone is a DJI phantom 4 pro. I'm now shooting on the a7sIII which is a great camera.

TAS coast, rugged, pristine and picturesque. We loved the east coast around freycinet and wine glass bay. We’ll look after Mille sabords here in her new home in Portland vic.

The difference to racing & cruising = Both sailing but one is using the weather & the other enjoying the weather to your advantage . Great drone shots , Well put together , Thanks . The Bass straits like sailing up the NZ coast , Never the same from point to point .

    • @bruce_walters
      @bruce_walters  2 роки тому +1

Thanks Bill. I think the other big difference which you can see in the footage, is the amount of sail we put up. We still had to take our weather opportunities, and chose to take some serious wind in the straight instead of waiting and having to potentially motor, but we put up such tiny sails that we felt very comfortable and safe.

There's a beauty to them isn't there. Watching nature do it's tiny flexes of it's power is always impressive.

Outstanding video. Still trying to work out what 1M+ channel its been taken from ;)
Seriosuly though, very well put together with a solid mix of media. One suggestion for your next exit (I'm hoping that there is one) is to colour grade the drone footage to match the look of the main camera. Otherwise perfectly executed. Well done.

Thanks heaps Jake. Yep it's always a struggle to get the drone and gopro looking like sony stuff, but I'm encouraged to do better...
