I broke down the moment I heard this. The perfect depiction of my experience of healing after a failed engagement. We dated when I was very young, 18 and he was 23. 3 years later we had a baby and were engaged. He left me for someone else. Took the ring. Took the baby. I was homeless. Absolute worst time of my life. Our relationship was sooo toxic and abusive on both sides but we loved hating each other. It HAD TO END. I had no idea who I was without him. Without our home. Without our baby. I had to start a life. A new life by myself and on my own. 2.5 years later I love myself so beyond. There isn’t words to describe it. I could never go back to him. I could never put myself in a position to love someone that didn’t appreciate my value and worth. I have my son. I have a home. I have a job. And actually now have a daughter. Still a single mom but totally loving myself through every moment. This song soooo registers with the ending of that relationship and the start of a relationship within myself. It is beautiful. It is perfect. 2019 needed this and we needed it FROM HER.
That must be very painful. My daughter that I mentioned is half black and my own father disowned me because of her race. So I understand partially the pain you’re feeling. It’s not a competition of who is more hurt or who’s story is worse though. This is about self love and it seems as though we both have found that AND God. I’m proud of you and I’m happy for you for starting to love yourself !

So I know the song is about a relationship between a man and woman. But if you take the romance out of the song, it almost reminds me of my relationship with my father. Because I had to lose him to find myself because it is when he was in my life, it was always always about him and then I did end up hating him. Because of that, he was no longer in my life and it actually got a lot better. And I'm not saying that distancing yourself from family members is a great thing but when your father is abusive both mentally and physically and you just get yourself from that part your life, you can find all whole on a happiness elsewhere. But that's not just in relationships with fathers and daughters or relationships between a man and woman. I think that's true in any kind of relationship where one side is a contributing more and the other is taking advantage of the other person. I don't know I just felt very close to the song not because of a romantic relationship that I lost but because it kind of explained what I went through all-in-one go. I just feel like Selena singing the song could actually tap into many different peoples pain whether it be an abusive relationship, a toxic parent or a friend or someone who takes advantage of another person. I really feel like a lot of different people are going to like the song because of this.

I think every Selena in this video shows a different emotion. One of them is definitely anger (probably a nod to the lyric I needed to hate you to love me). And in the beginning, she was fidgeting and looking back as if she just got out of that relationship and was still trying to find herself and you can see as the video progresses that she becomes more confident in herself and more sure of herself. My mind is just blown the more I watch this video. This is definitely her best work yet. My mind is just blown the more I watch this video. This is definitely her best work yet. The lyrics hit home in every way, the production is AMAZING and I love that she doesn't need to scream high notes in order to get her point across. this song just screams Selena Gomez - classy, lovely, authentic and emotional.
