I helped with a flip this past winter/spring on a 100 year old house built on a crawl space. Half the floor joists were broken, there was no insulation in an addition, the grade of the backyard drained all rain and snow under the house, window sills were rotted, and not a single wall, floor, or ceiling was level or square in the place. It should have been torn down and had a new build, but the flipper was looking for a quick flip. It was a heck of a project, and most of the house is still unlevel, however it did end up selling, but the flipper lost about $90K.
Anyway, this made me realize I'd love to be a carpenter, plumber, and/or electrician.

Leaking toilet rotted 1/3 of the planks and the previous refresh decided to tile around the vanity lol. The leaky toilet could have been easily avoided using a rubber toilet gasket because the house shifts so much.

Got a Delta Monitor Lahara. The cartridge exploded during an unusual freeze in my area (it rarely gets below freezing where I live but it did that one winter). Sent them a photo, the info on when & where I bought it, the digital receipt, etc and they sent a new cartridge for free. My old trim kit was 3 knobs- hot, cold, & diverter for tub spout/shower. They were ugly. Now I have a single one that has dual function- small lever controls temp & larger one controls pressure. I can actually leave the temp at where I like it and move the pressure one when I turn on the shower.
I'm going to have to do something similar when removing an old avocado green one-piece shower/tub. Going to suck tearing it all out.
Looks like that wall needs some Killz! (I thought that as soon as I saw mold & before you mentioned it).
Oops, I purchased my fixtures first. LOL. Although, it worked out for my ensuite bathroom project.

I grew up in apartments in NYC, which were maintained by landlords and supers. Something went wrong, you called the landlord and it would get fixed. So, I never really knew what went on behind the walls. How was everything held together? Was it magic, or magnets? I never really gave it much thought. It always just _was._ It wasn’t until my father moved us out to the suburbs and into a peach-colored ranch that was built in 1965 that I learned.
After living in that house for 12 years, after my father and mother relocated to Florida, and after the pink-tiled bathroom began falling apart and the shower began leaking into the basement, I was fed up and put my foot through the wall and said, “Well, now I have to learn how to fix this.” Tearing apart that bathroom from rafters to joists, I finally learned what exists behind walls: someone else’s shitty work.
That was one of the best life lessons I have ever learned.

This video reminds me of when I went to install a waterline for my new fridge and as I was making my way drilling holes through the bottom of the cabinets and when I got to the dishwasher it was mush. I pulled the dishwasher out and discovered black mold. So, a simple water line install turned into a full kitchen remodel because the cabinets had to be removed and all the drywall to make sure all the mold was killed. I had to call in a remediation company which then turned into an asbestos remediation....

How about when your installing the tub suround but the holes are off. I ran into this when I didn't measure the mixing valve and spout properly. I dry fitted the back panel in and made a cardboard template and located the holes perfectly and then transfered to the side panel and the holes were 2 1/2" off from left to right. What I didn't know at the time was that the side panel did not slide in all the way and butt up to the back wall. Now I haveto try and relocate the the piping and cut new holes in the panel to make it work. I did try contacting the company to see if I could just buy the new panel and it was a no go. I searched youtube and didn't really find anything useful. The best I could come up with is using a remodeling ring to cover the hole when I move the spout over some. It won't be centered but better than it was. As for the ring, I ended up using a 1 1/2" washer that I primed and painted. A video on how you would approach this and fix it would no doubt be helpful. great work btw,I do get alot from your videos.

We've been in our 1942 1.5-2 story since last fall and the bathroom walls have streaks of water running down them if the AC has been run recently. Even closing the register as much as possible hasn't helped much as the condensation is beading on/near the register grill and where the duct rises up behind the wall. The house was bought renovated as a flip and with previous conversions and everything covered it's frustrating to not know what's actually hidden behind walls and what is a lurking disaster. What's weird is that most of the major work looks mostly decent to solidly professional, but finish details are either lacking or poorly done.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the flippers either added the first/only exhaust fan ducting or at least replaced the exterior vent shutters and put in the cheapest 50 CFM from HD. I've tried taking cooler showers without recent AC but it hasn't improved much at all, so given I've never had these issues in other smaller rooms with the same flow exhausts, I'm thinking the may be a problem with the exhaust ducting flow. Our AC is working well, no indication of a evap condensate drain problem, but indoor humidity seems to have become a sudden issue with noticeable drink and bathroom condensation. We've had a lot of rain and humidity this summer but didn't really have any issues during wet periods in spring and early summer. Not really sure what to do but I think it's at least in part from hacked up HVAC duct work right above the bathroom register to the former attic(?) that's now a pretty big bedroom/den/loft. Apparently behind the built-in bookshelf and drawers is the only semi-accessable unfinished space with a few ducts and drain vent stack presumably. With a weird layout and several renovations over the years it's a mystery what's hidden and it seems maybe conditioned air is leaking in to some mostly empty interior wall cavities.

Two things, Jeff, first: when you slid in the shower your back was probably a centimeter from ramming into the shower control valve pipe sticking out. Second: you are dealing with a trailer from the 70's. They were built so cheaply and crappy I'm not surprised with the problems. Anyone with money back then didn't live in them. In fact, in storms they went airborne with any large gust of wind. In a tornado you found them across town!😂😂

Can I just say, BTDT? I'll be watching as this unfolds. In my case it was a kitchen that my home inspector said had a loose tile in front of the sink cabinet. After closing, I went and looked under the tile, only to find a direct opening to the crawl space. An improper, leaking, dishwasher drain connection left me with floor joists that were only remaining in place by memory.

Welcome to Florida, the first rule of thumb when buying a house in Florida is, slab on grade due to the moisture problems. The second rule of thumb is make sure the inspector has looked hard for termites. I wish i could post a photo of what I found on my current remodeling project on my girlfriends house. The entire stud pack on one corner of the house was nothing but mud and toothpicks, 5 2x4's gone. Luckily they stopped at the top plate in that spot. They did get into one side of the 2x10 header on the porch.

My favourite parts of your videos, and well, all home improvement shows, is when things are being demo'd and you hear "What the hell????" The greatest part of your vids is you actually show how you fixed things, where as on HGTV they just glance over it. It's like decorating shows. My favourite part is when they come in and redesign the house and it looks beautiful and they show the features of the room and I say to my wife, "I guess they didn't need a tv in their house with 4 kids" and the tv is nowhere to be seen.

A mobile home built in the 70s will be full of unexpected surprises. I know first hand from fixing my 1977 KB home. The subfloor is basically particle board which is probably the biggest issue. I wish I had completely gutted the entire place from the beginning instead of doing one room at time. The CPVC pipes absolutely should be replaced with copper or pex. It gets brittle and will fail spectacularly especially if you try to cap off or repair it in any way. Ask me how I know, lol! Just replace it all. Trust me! You may get lucky not replacing it but I wasn’t so fortunate.

Got called out a few years back to a Mc Donald's restaurant with my pump truck because the refurb guys found that none of the plumbing for the sinks in the Kitchen area were connected to the pipework. Years of rotten food and fat had been dropping in to the crawl space below the floor. I had to get under there and jetwash it all out. Absolutely disgusting. Threw all my clothes away after and drove back across country in my skiddies.
