Brahmins are considered as the almightly Narayana and are treated as the representatives of the departed parents, grand parents and ancestors. So while we give Rice akshintha to the Brahmin representing the god, Tila askhintha is given to the Brahmin representing the departed elders. Offering food to priests on Shraadh Paksha Amavasya is highly meritorious.
