Nothing beats a vintage console Hammond and a real Leslie. It lives, breathes, shimmers, screams, grinds, sounds precious, inspiring, musical, soulful and timeless. After nearly two decades with almost no Hammond - except gospel church music which I happen to love - (80s and 90s) and one decade where the Hammond sound slowly found its way back to jazz, country, rock, prog rock, pop, funk, soul, R'n'B and "easy listening" - it finally is everywhere again and here to stay. Proof that the Hammond is simply timeless and the design with all it's quirks (leakage, key click, harmonic foldback....) simply is spot-on. I can listen to this for hours and hours! Fantastic playing - great sounding model! Thanks for posting.
Well described. I too love the Hammond sound - truly it is the king of electric instruments, analog or digital. The tone wheel generator’s perfect sine wave is to me the most beautiful voice among all instruments. And talk about versatility! On its own it can stand in for a full orchestra. In a church it will give a pipe organ a run for its money. In every form of popular music - whether it be easy listening as in Earl Grant’s Ebb Tide, or jazz as played by Jimmy Smith, or R&B as played be Booker T., or rock as played by Billy Preston and many others - the distinctive Hammond sound adds richness and power. Its distinctive jazz voicing, as played here, was first used by Jimmy Smith, who used the percussion’s “attack” to drive home his amazing licks and runs. I managed to eke out a living playing my A100 in rock bands during my misspent youth. They were some of my happiest years.
I asked my beloved ones to play your "Killing it " on my funeral to check that I am really gone. If only one cell in my body is still alive, I will revive. Thank you, Joe Pantano
Damn! ...There's just no sweeter sound than a real B-3. I could listen to this all day and never get tired of it. Thanks for the post...Excellent playing too.
Hi, FWIW coming from an amateur organ player. Watching Joe playing ordinary tunes rather than lots of meaningless jazz riffs and runs is a revelation. He's one stunning player, as you can all see. Just a joy to listen to, and his command of the A100 is a talent not many players can master. fabulous Joe.
The first cut takes me back to my high school jazz band days! Well done. Over the years I've found myself preferring the sound of the A-100 over the B-3, and this one doesn't disappoint. Thanks!
The epitome of confidence and technical ability. ...... that "ear-candy" chord @ 5:01-5:04 just before "The More I See You". ...... and God said, "Let there be Joe Pantano.....! Thanks for posting.
This was the “home” version of the Hammond B3 organ. Its voicing and controls are identical. The A100 has a full walnut cabinet, and built-in speakers. Most owners used an external Leslie speaker (the big wooden cabinet to the right). This is a very difficult instrument to play, and the guy here is an expert. No other organ or synthesizer can duplicate the depth of sound of a big Hammond connected to a Leslie speaker. Many have tried.
I was so blessed to play drums behind a musical genius and his B3 w Leslie for over 10 years. That sound still stirs my soul and melts my heart. Nothing will ever match that sound.
The digital Hammond keyboards have manual bass so you can play bass with your left hand. It's still challenging, but do-able. When I had a pos console hammond organ I could play foot bass on ballads and medium tempo tunes. The dumb part tho is you have to play a bass line with your left hand and then a simpler sub bass line with your foot for it to work and it sounds kinda muddy. This dude in the video is a savant and is playing a medium tempo tune with only foot bass. Almost noone can do that. Most people only do bass with only foot for ballads. So for me it's better to just have a digital Hammond keyboard and do all the bass with my left hand. I'm not super gifted or anything. It's fun tho and sounds pretty good.
I think the real hero here is the Zoom Q3HD cause holy shit this is the most beautiful sounding recording of a Hammond I've ever heard. I swear, coming through my speakers it sounds like it's in the room with me
Nothing sounds like a Hammond! Growing up I took organ lessons on a Wurlitzer and another make that I can't think of but I always envied the unique sound of the Hammond! Beautiful.....Unique!
I feel very fortunate to own a B3 and an A-102. I have a long way to go to play like this but the journey is where the fun is at. Joe is such a soulful player. I have been inspired deeply by this.
What a sound. The speakers on by desk are about 2 feet tall so I really feel the funk. I love how the bass is so present but tight and not at all boomy, such a good mix of tones.
So awesome!! And to rain on the parade, 30 yrs from now musical craftsmanship such as this will be gone forever... Sorry, I'm socially inept. But, THIS WAS SO AWESOME!!
Aint no sound like it. such a beautiful sound. I've loved the Hammond sound ever since i was about 15, way back in the 60's. My family had a business in Chicago and I'd drive by the Hammond company lots of times there. I am a guitar player but I sure wish I took up the keyboards also. I play a little here and there but just never found the time to take it seriously. my dumb luck. Oh well, stuff happens. Great playing Joe. ^5
Yeah... a B-3 with the BIG six foot high Leslie (with the obligatory lights in the horns so everybody could see them spinning)... and a Fender Rhodes 73 (both weigh a fricking ton). Full brass section. Big drum kit. Bass. And me. I had a Fender Super Six combo with six 10" speakers (heavy)... plus a Sunn Super Coliseum head and four 12" cabinet (heavy) and a Ampeg something or other with six 12" cabinet (heavy). Plus five fricking guitars. For sound we have a Peavey system with four subs, three mids, and two high horns ON EACH SIDE (unbelievably heavy) and two roll around cabinets full of amps (probably 200-250 pounds each), and a huge mixing console. Took two trailers to haul all the crap. Now??? Hell man... a couple of suv's can haul equipment around that would blow all that off the stage. My ONE guitar amp weights around 50 pounds and can sound like ANY amp in the world. ANd my ONE guitar can sound better than any of the old ones. And the new digital Hammonds sound just like the vintage ones... and can sound like a stock one or warmed up one or full blown rock job. And a couple powered two ways and powered sub have more power than our whole old rig. That new digital Hammond really really kicks a$$. Check out "Robert Cray - Cookin' In Mobile 2010. Man the guy playing keyboards is fantastic!!! The whole concert is great... but the keyboardist has a solo on the Hammond on the song at 37:08. He steps it up into the gritty area and it really cooks.
My (late) friend, Charles Paul, was the original musical director and organist of the CBS soap opera, "As the World Turns." He used to play a Hammond B-3 organ, Steinway piano, and Simone celeste while the show was performed live. I have loved the Hammond organ sound since the 1960s, but have never owned one. I currently own a Lowrey Imperial, and I tried to get it to sound like a Hammond in some of my videos. Greetings from NYC!!!
And now ladies and gentlemen for your listening pleasure here at the BoomBoom Room at the Holiday Inn Toledo, OH is the fantabulous Joe Pantano. Really. Wonderful performance.
Blimey. So many quick and subtle adjustments to tone; hands and feet moving all the time - it would be easier to fly a helicopter. That's some majorly impressive playing and a wonderful tone. Beautifully done sir.
Dad has been gone for a while now, but everytime I hear a Hammond being played like this it always remind me of him.
Sorry for your loss man
Same here. Pfff...

Incredible - great pianist and amazing operator at one time. Yesterday, all my hammonds seemed so far away...

That guy is mighty talented. And a damn great-sounding A-100 (and Leslie). Love the nice, deep, rich bass from the pedalboard.
❤️❤️ It doesn’t get any better than this. The quintessential groove & sound of my generation. Bravo.
I only play piano, but I’d love to learn to play an organ like this! I just love the sound.
I can't get around the playing bass with your feet bit! :D

^ THIS! I was wondering how they got such a great sound - I still can’t believe that’s through a camera’s microphone?!!
I agree, there is almost no background noise/hiss, and little distortion ... sounds like a really high quality, professional recording!
There's some kind of amplifier in the room. Maybe the audio was recorded directly from one of its outputs?
@@fraggsta You can't do that with a mechanical Leslie speaker. This is definitely recorded with microphones.
Awesome 💘 to hear you play.so peaceful and calming. Beautiful 🎁.
The sound of this Hammond Organ. Perfect!
