The contestants met at the restaurant Commissary, owned by former Top Chef Masters contestant Traci Des Jardins, where they were challenged to make their best piece of toast. Instead of immunity, the winner received a Rational AG oven valued at US$16,000.

I agree. Toasted bread in all forms is a classic accompaniment to food and has been part of main courses forever (they're called open-faced sandwiches). Everything that comes out of San Francisco is pretentious and overpriced.
