  • The Monterey Peninsula is an coastal region in Central/Northern California that include the cities of Monterey, Pacific Grove, and the Del Monte Forest. There are nature trails, wharfs, and cliffs and beaches to explore. We only spent a day there, but you could stay a weekend to enjoy all of the area.
    Jack’s Peak:
This is a wooded area in Jack’s Peak Park. You can drive up the parking lot, and take 0.8 mile-loop trail that starts on Jack’s Peak Trail and comes back on Skyline Nature Trail (or go in the reverse. Jack’s Peak itself is just a small clearing with no views. But along the Skyline Trail, there’s a clearing with great views of Monterey.
    Dennis the Menace Park:
This is a massive playground that’s completely fenced in, with just one entrance and exit. One of the main features is a giant bridge to run across. There are multiple unique playground structures in the park, and it truly is huge. We spent over an hour here, and the kids didn’t want to leave.
Old Fisherman’s Wharf is a pier with lots of stores and restaurants, with nice views of the boats in the harbor. It’s a great place to stop for lunch or dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants.
    Monarch Grove Sanctuary:
Located in Pacific Grove, this is a small park with a short path through it. You can see large groups of Monarch butterflies all throughout the trees.
Monterey Coast / Great Tide Pool:
Along the north end of the Monterey peninsula is a long stretch of beach mixed in with rocks. You could stop anywhere along the way for breathtaking views. Walking along the rocks, there are numerous tide pools where you can find sea animals like crabs and snails. The specific place we went to was called the Great Tide Pool.
    17-Mile Drive:
This is a long stretch of road which goes along the western coast of the peninsula. The entire road goes through a private neighborhood, so you need to pay a vehicle entrance fee at the gate to enter it. The road goes along multiple beaches that you can stop and play in. Then the road goes along the cliffs, with multiple stops to look out at the views. One of the stops is Pescadero Point, which has a short path through the Monterey cypress trees with beautiful views of the coast.
