I lived in Lakewood for nearly 30 years and grew up listening to Ed Sardella and Mike Landess. Back when journalism was unbiased and respectful.
So ahead of their time. Top notch graphics and great commentary
Love this early 80's local news. Back then they covered real news, and you could tell who was boss, and KBTV was indeed that. Later to become KUSA, but you can see the quality then, instead of today's young and pretty anchors.
We grew up watching KBTV Denver via microwave and cable on the Western Slope. This is a great upload and reminds me of a great period in Colorado TV. Thanks!!!!
Back When Denver's News was as fine as any place in the Nation. Bill Kuster was a terrific Weather Man, Second only to Stormy Rottman. Sure wish things were still like this. All the TV News is just horrible anymore. The integrity of Cark Akers... a journalistic Icon.
Quite an interesting video! Amazing Mike Landess is still in the Denver market. Interesting seeing those car commercials too.
The exact date of this broadcast is March 30th, 1983. Sardella mentioned in this broadcast that Channel 9 aired the last episode of “The Thorn Birds” that same night. “The Thorn Birds” aired over 4 nights - March 27th through the 30th, 1983.
First thing I noticed about this newscast was the absence of bad news. I.e. murders; car accidents, etc. I'm sure they were happening. But I guess their format back then was slated more towards lighter hearted news. About the heaviest this newscast got was the news about the Aurora residence. Very very interesting.
+Mike Garcia This is when I liked the news, unfortunately I was too young to be in habit of watching it, and now i'm stuck with this shit they put out today. The shame is that if they didn't try so hard to be like one another, there would still be newscasts like this today. The problem with the media is that it's a business, and perhaps it shouldn't be. Perhaps quality and integrity should matter more than the bottom line.
Back then, there wasn't horrible news every day. That's the difference.
They were on their building on Bannock (if I recall correctly). The Speer and Logan studios didn't open until the mid-1990s. Incidentally, when KUSA left their building, PBS six moved in.
And before PBS (then KRMA) moved to this location, their studio was in the Emily Griffith Opportunity School Building and they were run by Denver Public Shcools, I believe.
This is the TV News I watched in Denver all those years ago when
I was a college kid out there.
Ed Sardella, Mike Landis, Jim Benneman. No wonder 9News is Colorado's News Leader! All anchors originated from there and then spread out to the other Denver stations.
I remember Landess' first day on the job. He introduced himself and said something about his Corvette and ice racing, if I remember right. It was about 77.
Jim Benemann reporting
Ed sardella is a class act
vaporwave bringing this back
Thanks for the post. One small correction: Akers spelled his first name with a "C".
"Remove our snow tires for The Fourth of July" suggested Carl Akers in this Spring 1983 commentary...Fast forward to late Autumn 2022 and the suggestion might be to "remove our 1st & 2nd Amendment Rights." Food for thought for Coloradans in these modern times.🤔 You know, like "inflation is transitory" as evidenced by the 1983 prices in the Albertsons grocery commercial.💵💸
good memories
i tried to get a job at albertsons they said i was trespassing in their store
11.9% financing! Wow!! Remember that?????

In This Clip, From 5:24 To 5:43, It Was KBTV-TV's 9 News Action Center At 10 Video Bumper #2 From Wednesday Night, March 30, 1983.
Do you have any footage of anchorman Larry Camp in the early 1980's on 9news Denver? Larry anchored the 6:00 am and noon news broadcasts. He is my girlfriend's father and she has been desperately searching for any footage of him to share with her children. Thank you in advance.
Vince Fuqua There is literally one second of him here. ua-cam.com/video/-Zqnggpu6_s/v-deo.html
Wyoming would get Amtrak service back via the Pioneer to Boise and Portland, then lose it again.

Do you know if they were in the new building on Speer and Logan by this time?
Nope! At that time, KBTV/KUSA were at 1089 Bannock Street. They moved to Speer and Logan in 1992, and RMPBS took Channel 9's place at 1089 Bannock
