It would have been really cool if multiple clubs had participated from all the other big judo nations like Netherlands, Germany, Russia(after the war) Spain, Italy etc
I love the team competitions, especially when their multi-national like this. It'd be interesting if they had one where the fans can fantasy pick their judoka teams.
There were a lot of french team because it was in France, last year it was in Serbia and there were a lot of Serbian team. But I don't know how the selection system work.
This has been going on for a while and is basically the Judo equivalent of the Champions League in football. Would it be strange for a Japanese guy to play for Manchester United? No of course not. High level international players are purchased and transfer to the biggest clubs. PSG had Lasha Shavdatuashvilli playing for them last year. Judo is a bigger part of the overall sports infrastructure in some European countries. Clubs like Sporting Lisbon, PSG, Galatasaray and Barcelona all have or have had Judo alongside badketball, football, etc.
There used to be Champion's League (tier 1) and Europe League (tier 2) held at these events, 4 medalists from each constituted next year's Champion's league entry (Europe League was free to enter). They changed it after covid and I'm not sure why more teams weren't participating this time. Also this is the first time they combined men's and women's teams.

Isn't it because they just failed to qualify?
