I'm British/Jamaican background but was born and raised in Toronto Canada like Rochelle. A lot of the time I say "it takes a village to raise a child" I believe that it takes more than just parents to help raise a child. Guidance, and support from grandparents, aunts uncles, even Godparents.
*VILLAGE = "community of people smaller than a town"*
I dont see how anyone's taking offense to the word when it actually means a rightly nit community that's more like family.

Hey Rochelle, the word "Village and Villager " is a negative term in most cases in African culture. Myself as a Jamaican/Canadian knows this. I understood what you meant, but even I cringed when you said it. You just need to gain some cultural competence.
Some would say Negro is not derogatory, however we as Black people know otherwise.

I'm African and no it's not negative, please stick to defending your own culture that you know about and are familiar with. I can't stand when other cultures talk about what is offensive in another culture for another people so confidently and generally. Always somebody getting offended and trying to "correct" someone on somebody else's behalf. As you can see the two African's she spoke to in this video also didn't really care cause it's not offensive unless you are just looking to be offended.

In Twi (I can't speak for the other Ghanaian languages), the word village or villager *depending on its context* has a somewhat of a negative connotation to it. It just is what it is... So I think the disconnect here has more to do with language and culture than anything. IMO, if you choose to expatriate to or visit another country, you should have some reverence for the culture and not impose your own ideals. So, instead of dismissing the comments on your previous video, you should seek to understand rather than to be on defense. I think it's also important to consider how big Nigeria and Ghana are when comparing the two. All love, just want to help you understand why people were offended by that comment. And Happy Birthday to Naomi!

    • @naturalempress8564
      @naturalempress8564 8 місяців тому +20

Respectfully-no one should have to tell Rochelle this stuff-she also claims Jamaican ancestry-she knows the ramifications of making certain comments/statements that folks can take it the wrong way or become sensitive especially when comparing cultures/countries💯It just comes with the territory but hopefully you will think twice before making certain comments and also respect the opinion of others (it may not have hurt you but clearly it hurt others)-have some compassion/understanding, eh/aye?🤔

@naturalempress8564 you make no sense. She never said it in a negative way so it shouldn't be taken negatively. If say I like GREEN apples and they make you sick. Should I have to think twice because of how they make YOU feel? Should I think twice and include RED apples so they don't feel left out? The analogy I'm giving sounds bizzar right? Just as foolish as your comment. People need to grow up and like Rochelle said look at the context of what she was saying and stop taking things so personal 🙄

There's a famous saying "it takes a village to raise a child" which essentially means it takes a whole community to raise a child. This is because village means community.

    • @MsHaynez

I agree with what Rochelle says, it’s not a big deal. As a born and bred Guyanese who was naturalized as a US citizen and have traveled to many African countries and lived in Nigeria for a year its not ok for people make generalizations about the US, but it happens all the time and many people judge you because you are considered yankee and all other notions they have not even experienced . It goes both ways and all about maturity in understanding where people are coming from. If anything I’ve meet more resistance from West and East Africans who totally disregard that I am Guyanese.

Oh Rochelle, I think i understand why Ghanaians may be upset about the village thing. it can be understood like they still living in huts with no electricity, no cars, civilisation etc you know that narative that is still being thrown around about Africa.
Its pronounced as 'Lay-gos' not 'Lay-Goes'
The island has trees everywhere, like, every street has loads of trees im not sure where you only saw concrete lol granted its a more quiet affluent area where people arent just walking in the streets. but if you went to the other side of lagos where theres hustle n bustle you will see kids, people speaking mostly yoruba language, beggers on street, hawkers, stores etc

Come on, i think Rochelle chose to stay in Ghana for a reason. If she didnt love it there i dont think she would be there. I do agree maybe she couldve chosen a different choice of words to describe it since people are offended easily, but i think she just meant more of community-like atmosphere/ closeness as well as there being more greenery.
I think its obvious that she only compared the two places because she was recently visiting nigeria and she is broadcasting her experience and her point of view to give the viewers an idea for those who've never visited. Both places look beautiful and both places seem to have something special which makes it unique.
    Anyway lol

In the Black American Culture the word village is positive. We always say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Never knew that village has a negative connotation in other countries. It’s just a difference in Cultures but I’ll definitely be respectful of that when visiting.

    • @indede9787
      @indede9787 8 місяців тому +2

Certainly. Eg in Ghana,if you really want to insult someone, you call them a villager. Same with Nigeria, I believe from their movies ive seen. It hits hard. I think what didn't help is calling ghana a village in comparison with Nigeria.. if you know anything about the relationship between these 2 countries, you'd understand the reaction. I like that you have said you have learned from this. So many commenters, ignoring the cultural difference and having a go at Ghanaians who feel offended. They just need to learn and not expect Africans to drop their cultural ways at tye drop of a hat and see things from the foreigners perspective. I get it, village is deemed superior in some parts of the world.. what you do though when in a new country is try and understand them, then try and show them the light. The approach being used by some UA-camrs doesn't work.

6:02 Ghana is definitely a village in a certain sense 😄 Some ghanaians don't seem to understand that, they only know ghana (they don't understand the beauty and infrastructure design the country is missing even compared to some other african countries). A very distorted self perception (a good amount of other africans have this distorted self image as well). There are many things we need to improve and renovate, the only issue of course is money (but some specific things can be improved aesthetically without spending too much).
But that was definitely not the way to say it. Calling a whole country a village 😄

She is 100% right. Lagos Island is a city, it's like downtown Toronto vs. Shelburne. Ghana is more rural and community based, Lagos Island is more business oriented, the commimunities are more gated etc. Everyone drives, and is more closed off, so yes you are 100% right. Ghana is more like what we would describe village and Lagos island is more of a metropolitan vibe.

    Rochelle you are over explaining.
You even said on this video ‘I’m comparing Accra to the islands… the islands are a lot more ADVANCED than anywhere else in Nigeria’. Nothing about that talks about ‘community’ that you are now stating.
You are from Jamaica, I’m sure you know there is a big difference between how people consider village life and a city life.
When you explained it to the Nigerian man you even said, what I meant to say was XYZ. Great, but that’s not what you actually said, so people were offended by what you actually said which was ‘Ghana is like a developed village’, which can cause offence in the country you currently live in.
Also, perhaps asking a Ghanaian person for context and then you’ll understand why you received such comments.
As someone said below, instead of just dismissing it, understand the country you have expatriated to.

This is not actually true (though the point can be taken to move past this silly issue): the islands are not "a lot more advanced" (whatever that may mean) than Abuja, nor even particular areas of greater Port Harcourt (e.g., GRA, Trans Amadi or CFC junction, secretariat area, NLNG Residential Area).
Having visited Accra, I'd say the most appropriate comparison in Nigeria is the city of Uyo - green (more so than Accra even), developed, nice scapes, not many highways or highrise buildings, with a small community vibe. The bottom line is Accra (small town feel) is not Lagos (global city feel) and vice versa, that's simply the point she was making.

If is funny that the word village in the UK has a mostly positive connotation for people. I personally understood what Rochelle meant and did not put me off ever visiting Ghana, actually the complete opposite.

It’s the comparison. I notice it’s not a good idea to compare Nigeria to Ghana and vice versa about anything. It’s been ongoing dispute between both countries. Just don’t do it to be safe.

Common, do you mean Lagos and Ghana because it is an insult on Nigeria to compare her with village Ghana?

  • @yaadapaah887

U were in apart of Lagos which is very developed. Nigeria is the richest country in Africa which u cannot compare to Small Ghana . There's money in Nigeria to make if u know the right way.U were in rich area in Nigeria so u didn't see the real Nigeria. Nigeria was a beautiful country to visit yrs ago .Its a little fast paced Ghana . There's nothing wrong with a village but Ghana is definitely not a village. If u want peace u stay in Ghana if u want wahala u go to Nigeria lol 😂 People like Ghana because of the layed back vibe . Nigeria is not for the weak. Its over populated, there's poverty like Ghana but they r on a different level . The hustle is different over there.Nigeria a country so rich and yet so poor.

It's about time these comparisons stop. From the way she's talking, there's a huge possibility that she will be moving to Nigeria, which is fine.

In New York City, we call the neighborhood of Harlem a village because everyone looks out for each other and the children. Sadly, with gentrification, that is changing.

Happy Birthday Beautiful Naomi ❤ I think the village thing may be more about classism.. Africans are big on stature and money. Village is sometime associated with having less and/or having old fashion ways. Of course, Westerners are moving in the direction of less is more but with Africans more is more.😫😂♥️

I am grateful to be able to say “village” and villagers without anyone getting upset.. When I lived in America I lived in a village, it’s a better way of living . It’s a compliment I did not find Rochelle dismissive or disrespectful at all. How many things do we have to be careful about..🤨 I needed to update, I tried to find your friends Vegan business I tried several times to find the name but I was I was not successful
