It depends on whether these sabers were fatalis, gracilis, or populator. Based on the robustness, I'd actually say that these were Smilodon Populator, which would have averaged around 500-600 pounds, with exceptionally large members approaching and 1000 pounds. The 3 sabers in this scenario would destroy the wolves, this is like saying that 3 african lions (2 females and a male) couldn't take 5 spotted hyenas, and usually the hyenas drive the lions off due to a numbers advantage of more than triple (hyena clans can get up to 80 members). Due to the Smilodons' absolute bulkiness in the forelimbs, the front legs themselves probably weighed close to the amount of a wolf , because today's lions, which are more gracile, have front limbs that weigh up to 90 pounds. With this weight, I wouldn't be suprised if a saber could one-shot a dire or at least take it out of the fight. Needless to say, the dire wolves would put up a good fight, and both species usually live in greater numbers than that, but in similar ratios. I'd bet on the Smilodons in this one. Also, it seems that at least one of the wolves wasn't fully grown.

Based off what I've heard, these sabers were about the size of modern lions yet because of their physical form, they weighed more because their bodies were shaped more like a bear's than a modern big cat's. Hard to say what would happen. I imagine the wolves would've stood their ground while the cats would face off with them. The sabers' paws would've done some serious damage if they got some hits in, but the wolves' jaws were much stronger and would cripple a saber given the right chance to deliver such a bite. Both animals are/were magnificent, it's just sad how people try to belittle one or another.

Dire wolves would have DESTROYED sabertooths. Sabertooths are vastly overrated, not much stronger than modern tigers and their sustainable bite force is weaker than current tigers meaning their saber teeth commonly broke. Direwolves are like close relatives and a single direwolf alone is a close match for a sabertooth let alone 5-10
