Nakhchivan, originally in Armenia, joins Azerbaijan, but on the other hand, Nagorno Karabagh isn't allowed to join Armenia.

ZANGEZUR is Syunik province of ARMENIA, which cannot be constructed unless ARMENIA allows it. Armenia won't allow it easily because of what Azerbaijan did to Karabakh Armenians

Don't you think it's insane to force Armenia to give its own land for the imaginary corridor while neither Turkey nor Azerbaijan has yet constructed their parts of the corridor? And why would Armenia give away any of its land to Azerbaijan after the exodus of ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh? Why Turkey and Azerbaijan wouldn't try to establish a link via Iranian territory as they did for decades?
Azerbaijanis can always go to Nakhichevan region and Turkey via Armenia, using existing railroads and motorways, and showing passports (and paying customs, if they have to). Just like crossing any other border in the world. There is also the possibility of copying the solution Russia and Belarus have with Lithuania linking Kaliningrad oblast. The same solution Turkey and Azerbaijan can agree with Iran.
Sorry, but the Soviet Union does not exist anymore, Armenia and Azerbaijan are both independent countries now.
I really like Turkey and Turkish people very much (the same goes for Azerbaijan) but this request looks more like an ultimatum and new casus belli than a "proposal". Armenians don't deserve that after what they have passed through. No matter how angry you are at them.

Because we primarily agreed to open the transport route with the understanding that we would have similar arrangements for Nagorno-Karabakh. Now that there is no more Nagorno-Karabakh, we are under no obligation to reciprocate anything.

This was not a small country, neither was it a small piece of land. Artsakh (NK) and Nakhijevan were part of Armenia, Joseph Stalin, the Georgian, put it under Azeri control, even though population was mostly Armenian. Artsakh's Armenian history goes back to 700 BC. Azerbaijan became a republic in 1918, and they celebrated their 104 anniversary on May 2022. Azerbaijan, the land, was part of Persian Empire till 1828. They lost a war to Russian Empire, 1816-1828, and surrendered the land to Russian Empire, Russians called it Tatarstan. Joseph Stalin called it Azerbaijan in mid 1930s and put Artsakh and Nakhijevan, in Armenian meaning the first landing place (Noah's Ark) under Azeri control to please Turkey. Turkey also celebrated its 569 anniversary in May of 2022. Ottoman Empire was created in 1453 AD. Eastern Turkey was Armenian Highlands/Armenian Kingdom, and Western Turkey was Byzantium (Greek)/Eastern Roman Empire. In 1920's the then Western powers were very generous in gifting Armenian lands to Turkey. Yerevan the capital of Armenia celebrated its 2,800 anniversary 5/6 years ago. It is 29 years older than Rome. Also, Iran and Armenia have been neighbours form thousands of years. How can a country with 105 years history claim land from a people who have lived on their ancestral land more than 2000 years. The West, especially Europe has kept quiet about the facts, big oil contracts with Azerbaijan.

History is on the internet, not in the books of history that children are being educated in schools in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan doesn't agree to customs and border controls, bruh the Zangezur Corridor will go through Armenia so that's totally fair enough. When crossing from the UK to France, everyone has to go through customs and border controls there. Unless Azerbaijan establishes military control over the Zangezur Corridor, I don't see Armenia compromising on their sovereignty here.

Iran is the oldest country in the world with 5000 years of history. They survived Alexander the Great, Seljuke Turks and Mongols from the East, Abassid Arabs etc.
This Project has the potential to be good but goes without saying that the corridor would go through Armenia so their sovereignty should obviously be respected, it's totally up to them whether they want to sign up to this project.

@@manotenkerian that is the typical, "western" distorted half-knowlegde and potrayal of the events. That part of what you call "Syria" was part of Ottoman Empire back then. They were relocated bcs of the of the war/the eastern front between Ottomans/Turks and Zarist Russia and bcs Armenians joined the Russian side (Most of them survived the deportation btw; even Armenian sources admit that). What about the massacres Armenian Dashnak and Hunchakian gangs commited in Van, Erzurum, Kars etc? Over 500.000 Turks/Kurds were killed by Russians and Armenians in the east. The Russians also deported around 2 million Turks and other muslim people from the Caucasus in region. At the end of the 19th century almost half of the population of what is now Armenia were (Azerbaijani) Turks now there is not one left. Turks don't deny that massacres happened against Armenians -Turkish politicians apologised for that several times (btw in 1919 around 1000 Turks/Kurds were prosecuted for massacres) but massacres and war crimes happened on both sides! But usually the West and Armenians in the diaspora completely ignore the sufferings of Turks although there is significant proof of that, see renowned historians like Bernard Lewis, Malcolm Yapp, Stanford Shaw, Michael Gunter etc. who all clearly say that the term "genocide" is not appropriate since there is no proof of intent and the Armenians in western parts like Istanbul, Izmir were not harmed. The West and Armenians now even ignore what Armenia's first prime minister Hovhannes Katchaznouni in 1923 said about the events, i.e. that Turks acted in self-defence, that Armenians should not have trusted "imperialist forces", that they allied with the Russians etc etc..

This whole "zangezur" thing was created by Azerbaijan and is now supported by Turkey and Russia, Armenia didn't agree to any corridor. You can't find any documents with that phrase signed by Armenia. But the 3 countries I mentioned want to make us open that corridor by regularly initiating attacks on Armenia by Azerbaijan.
And Syunik(the region azeris and turks call zangezur) was part of the first republic of Armenia since 1918. It was Nagorno Kharabakh and Nakhijevan that was given to azeris by the Soviets

I am on Azerbaijan's side, BUT I think it should agree to customs and border protection by Armenia. That would be fair.
Armenia should also be allowed to collect tolls and build service plazas along tbe way. This would bring in good revenues for Armenia. In the end, there should be free trade between all three countries, which would help them a lot.

Thank you for a very balanced opinion. I believe you are right and as far as I know, the Armenian Government has proposed exactly that. Unfortunately Turkey and Azerbaijan want jurisdiction over the corridor, hence Armenian territory, which of course is not acceptable. Turks arrived into the region invading from central Asia about 5-6 centuries ago. Armenia and Armenians were there for more than 5000 years! Yet, there was Armenia and Armenians who had pretty much good relations with Persia [Iran]

Sure Armenians would love to live peacefully with their current neighbors and dream of prosperity by a rail link between Azerbaijan and Turkey, but Azerbaijan seems to want to gobble and own parts of Armenia first.

And, we witnessed their barbarism recently in Nagorno-Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is now gone forever for the Armenians; Azerbaijan military now occupies parts of mainland Armenia.
I'm not a European but it will be difficult to open Zangezur corridor so Azerbaijani and Turkey should not dream about reviving the corridor.
The corridor and addition borders between Turkey and Armenia will benefit Armenia more. Armenia need Turkey more than Europe to survive as they have only turkey and Georgia to access outside their landlocked land. Monotonous land to Iran is too costly or not feasible as Iran ports are not western freight friendly.

In return for this corridor Azerbaijan must pay reasonable amount of money to Armenia.
If Armenia does not agree to this deal Azerbaijan must seek alternative ways to connect its Nakhchivan Autonomous enclave to the mainland Azerbaijan. What are the other options to connect Nakhchivan to Azerbaijan?
(1) Azerbaijan can make a tunnel in the Zangezur corridor of Armenia 50 feet under the ground ( it is totally legal)
(2) Azerbaijan can make a moat in Zangizur corridor and fill it up with water (it is also legal).
(3) Azerbaijan can make an overbridge in the Zangezur corridor to connect Nakhchivan and Azerbaijan main land (it is quite right to do this).
How is legal if the borders are closed between Azerbaijan and armenia ?

If you are talking about the country established in 1918, then the situation is more complicated than either Armenians or Azerbaijanis would like the world to think.bNachichevan, Syunik and Karabakh were all disputed territories between the first Armenian and Azerbaijani republics. Because of the Paris peace conference and various other negotiations, the recognition of all three territories by international parties was fluid and there was fierce fighting between the two republics over those disputed territories. Whether Armenia and Azerbaijan like it or not, Russia did not hand over any territories that were unambiguously recognized as belonging to one country or another. The closest thing would probably be the European treaties which recognized all three or at least the first two as part of Armenia. But eventually those treaties were also thrown in the garbage.
The USSR simply settled a dispute between two countries over disputed territories in a manner that was beneficial to the Russians. So, either we except the Soviet borders, or we have some sort of land swap arrangement.

If Turkey and Azerbaijan would use the Corridor under Armenian jurisdiction yes. But that is not what those two want, they want control over the corridor, so they don't have to pay customs to Armenia and that is unacceptable.
Armenia doesn't want its economy to be flooded with Turkish goods as is the case with Georgia now. This will cause a massive blow to Armenia's agricultural and industrial sector, giving away more leverage and influence to Turkey over Armenia's economy.

It would be amazing to finally have peace in the region. Im turkish and I love azerbaycan but we should also protect armenia after a solution is found. Same with georgia and Iran. But iran is the biggest problem because they dont understand that they would be stronger with peace in the region instead of supporting everyone against azerbaycan and turkiye. Step 1. clear iraq and syria from PKK/YPG terrorists and kick the US out. Step 2. Accept each others sovereignty and work on relations. Step 3. Send troops to palestine to protect whats left and work for a peaceful solution. All of those people deserve peace. Armenia invaded Karabağ and Azerbaycan took it back. The best thing for both would be to allow/open the zangezur corridor. As someone in the comments already said, armenians next to the corridor could open shops and other things which would bring money to armenia and armenians and strengthen their ties. The real evil are the US and the EU.
