Memories of this game...for us , French highschool kids, we were in starvation of results from our national team that had mediocre achievements in the 60s and 70s, but it was already clear that we were at the dawn of much better days..although we lost to Italy and Argentina , we knew we gave a real challenge to two of the best teams of the World. This game taking place at 1 or 2 AM , French time and having school the next morning 'I remember it was in the night of friday to saturday' I had to go to bed , although i begged my father to let me watch it without success... he woke me though in the middle of the night and we watched the game...the morning after, me and all students were dozing during the first hour of class, at 8 o'clock, History...the teacher gave up , letting us all sleep on our desks.

The accuracy of their kicks at that time was very different from the standard today... Today very sharp..
The official ball was heavier, made out of cow hide and not plastic. You needed the strength of a bull to kick it. I know right as I was a kid in the 70s, I got a Tango 78 football on a birthday and it was like kicking a rock.

Had a Tango too, but trained on a #4 Telstar. It felt so much easier that way, still had to concentrate on accuracy as they weren't really easy to aim when you kicked them hard. 10 years ago I kicked back a modern ball of some kids playing on the street, the thing almost flew over the kid's head, the modern foot-balls feel so much lighter despite weighing the same (rule hasn't changed in that respect, materials and technology are leagues ahead today).

Not even close to those two. His record at international level was actually quite average - 20 goals in 43 games. He had a 3 match purple patch here but was very exciting going forward and Argentina wouldn't have won it without him.

After this match he got the terrible news that his youngest brother had died in a car crash on his way to the match. He kept on going the rest of the tournament and lifted the trophy for him. Men were real men back then, today they get offended because FIFA won’t let them wear rainbow armbands.
