I was in 3rd grade when this broke out! Man, Evel was the man! Every kid with a bike was jumping!

I was in second grade and I remember this event well. My brother's and I would make ramps in our alley and jump garbage cans. We had to do it in the alley because the parents would not approve! Great times. Great memories 👌 ❤️ 🏍 🚲

I go there all the time If you come into Twin Falls City and look to the east at a right angle you will see Knievel Hill which is where Evel made his failed jump. Everyone in my Idaho knows that story.

When we did show up and I began teaching him one of the first lessons that I showed him was hitting the jump correctly with momentum

In my neighborhood growing up everybody was a baby Minnie Evel Knievel. We had sidewalks in front of our houses so we would set up wood ramp stacked up on cinder blocks and be Evel Knievel jumping our bikes

They now have a trail that takes you out to the ramp where he jumped. It’s right by my house & I walk the trail often it’s a beautiful area. It gives you a great overlook of the canyon & the Perrine bridge it’s a beautiful area. If anyone is ever in Twin Falls I highly recommend taking a walk down the trail & checking it out you won’t regret it!

"… [B]ut them something happened…" that was planned all along. Knieval was well aware that he would never be able to reach the other side, as was every physicist and ballistics expert in the world. Even the lowlife in attendance at the event knew it. That was why they were there: to watch a man commit suicide. Knieval tricked them all, with an outcome as planned and perfectly executed as any could have been under the circumstances. The entire thing was a massive publicity stunt. Which in no way diminishes Knieval's outrageous level of courage for pulling off the scam. It was cool that he made fools of so many dumb chumps, too.

+Tipi Dan Yeah I was thinking about that. They had several test runs and the rocket always ended up in the River. He probably figured it was safer to deploy the chute prematurely and have a rescue team ready to save him. I mean, he was crazy but not stupid. He blames it on a mechanical failure and his team blames it on him releasing the dead man's switch. It's all showbiz anyway. They're really just there to see if he might die.
That event was doomed from the start. The crowd that showed up was out of control and turned into a crazy booze mob.....
But still, I give Evel props for just going up in that crazy rocket.
I watched it, he pulled the chutes, and collected $6 million. In 1974, that was probably $50 million today. It was the biggest scam of the 70's people loved him, kids wanted to be like him. We used our bicycles and built ramps and jumped over other kids! He was as big as they get. He knew his days were numbered, injuries and age put the writing on the wall. He cashed in and retired, he wasn't making the big bucks that he thought he deserved. I lost a lot of respect for him because of that. I was impressed with everything he did prior to this jump.

One mistake in the narration, this is up stream from Hells Canyon not down stream. Hells Canyon is along the Oregon border and is the deepest canyon in N. America.

For me that progressed into BMX but mostly street riding all the way into my adulthood all the way to now. I taught my son how to fly the bike at Lower Woodland BMX jumps in Seattle

How you hit the jump is how you land if you go off crooked without enough momentum you crash crooked. He was peddling off the tip of the jump and his pedal was dropping down as he hit the jump. I showed him how to plant his feet equally and hit the jump with speed to carry him through to a fluid landing and transition to the next set of jumps

That was no.motorcycle jump. More like a rocket. Lord he was crazy. Can u believe he lived to 68. Had a liver tea so Many and the drugs made him so moody his 2nd wife left. Came back the last few years rho..he needed her. What a gal. He had 2 excellent wives. Linda hung in until Crystal came along. 20 yr.s of his b.s.-- she deserved a medal.

I had a friend back in the 60's , who's older brothers built him a wooden jump to jump a maybe 10 ft wide 8 ft deep ditch.We would see it every day riding the school bus.I don't think he got the nerve to jump it with his swin spider bike..
