  • Meijer Inside Of A Former Super Kmart - Lincoln Park, MI. Enjoy a store tour of this Meijer store which retrofitted an old Super Kmart. For a long time, this location still resembled Super Kmart inside but recent renovations changed all of that. Still a nice store though!

    Hi Wallie,
    Today is Friday September 1st.I live in Detroit,Michigan and I just finished watching your video about Meijer,inside a former Super Kmart Center in Lincoln Park.
    This morning and I was reading in the Detroit Free Press in the Michigan Business Section. Demo,permit sought for old Kmart Headquarters in Troy,Michigan. The old Kmart Headquarters has been abandoned since 2006.
    The old Kmart Headquarters Building is located on Big BeaverRoad,and Coolidge in Troy near the Somerset Collection Mall in Troy. This is the very latest news about Kmart. I used to work for Kmart and I miss Kmart to this very day.

    Another Super Kmart that got retrofitted/remodeled into a Meijer is in Portage, Indiana. You can’t tell that it was a Super Kmart until you go to the side by the Garden Center/Electronics department, there is a door that leads to the old Sears Auto Center, that’s still visible from the outside. The old Super Kmart sign got upgraded to add lights, but still shows the shape of the old sign.

    Why would a company think it is cheaper to demolish than retrofit. There could be a few reasons:
    * Was there damage to the old building (Structural, Foundation Slab Cracks, Water Leaks, Mold, Radon, etc)?
    * Did the old building have things in it that were too costly to bring up to code or need to be removed (Asbestos, Lead, other hazards, etc)?
    * Was the old building in very bad shape or the roof in very bad shape?
    * Was there issues from lack of maintenance that it was too costly to renovate?
    * Were there issues with plumbing, electrical, drainage, chemicals, etc that were cheaper to start over than reuse?
    * Did the old building have too many code violations, unsafe conditions, liens, unpaid fines, etc that the city condemned it?

  • @DriftyAlison0
    @DriftyAlison0 Рік тому +4

    And you got to put into consideration any repair work to the building. The longer it stays empty its bound to need more work to make it back up.

    Meijer is a very nice chain of stores.

  • @peterjszerszen
    @peterjszerszen Рік тому +4

    I have worked in retail design. From a retailer's perspective, they like to know the history of their buildings and standardize them as much as possible. It's much easier when it comes time to renovate since each store likely got the same work around the same time over the years (Meijer always renovates chain-wide over a 3-4 year period about every 10 years). When you have a one-off store, a lot more time and attention has to go into tweaking a renovation package to fit it.
    I also find the removal of a drop ceiling to be kind of a cardinal sin. Have you ever noticed how much quieter and brighter it is in stores with them? Target has retained them (thankfully) but most retailers have ditched them for the sake of economics. All new Meijer stores had them until 1985 and they began removing them around 2000, first from the grocery section, then the entire store in subsequent renovations. Stores built in the '78-'84 timeframe had lower roofs and were designed with mechanical systems tightly packed in the plenum above the ceiling. Removing ceilings from these stores especially was a poor decision as it left a busy, messy look with a ceiling that actually felt lower because these stores didn't have the roof clearance to give the true 'warehouse' look they were going for (see Brighton store #46, a 1982 store as a good example of this). This current renovation wave that is wrapping up removed the last of all drop ceilings on the sales floor.
    In the case of the Lincoln Park Meijer, as the building itself is approaching 30 years old, it probably made more sense for them to remove the ceiling simply because by 30 years, major mechanical, electrical and plumbing overhauls are needed and the ceiling would have just gotten in the way (part of the reason they disappeared). Kmart avoided this by never renovating their stores, although I know of one exposed ceiling Kmart from 2003 that existed in Phoenix.
    Ceiling tiles also can provide some insulating value (and Meijer's were thick, fiberglass-batt tiles in the '78-'84 stores) so it costs them quite a bit more to now condition that extra volume of space. The store in Allen Park was intentionally built with a lower roof with energy costs in mind (it is their only LEED-certified store and was built atop a dump like CityView Center, except it was competently designed). Fun Fact: if you go into the Best Buy there, you can see the pipes going up to the roof labeled "Methane".

    • @peterjszerszen
      @peterjszerszen Рік тому

      Also, several of their stores from the early-'70s had a really cool corrugated "volumetric" drop ceiling with the lighting recessed up into the coffers. Those are the stores with balconies in the front. The Canton store (1974) once had a really neat yellow barrel-vaulted ceiling along the front of the store where the shoe repair, barber shop and other services were, with those white globe "hanging moon" light fixtures going down the middle. Meijer was once known for their innovative architecture well into the 2000s. Their stores today are fine but they are value-engineered econoboxes built to an absolute minimal cost and nothing more, this was their response to Walmart and came about after the great financial crisis.

    Overall a nice conversion. I can understand why they gutted a lot of the old K-mart fixtures, ceiling, lighting, etc. I think they wanted a more modern look on this and wanted to resemble a look from the 2020s era and not from the 1980s era. But I think it looks pretty nice and is a great use of an old Kmart Supercenter building.

    Meijer has been remodeling many of their stores in Metro Detroit. They have always been grocery first, merchandise second (that’s how they compete with Super Wal-Mart, which is the opposite).
    The radio towers directly next to the store are of AM 1500 WLQV. There used to be 12 until three were torn down when Kmart was built.

    I remember when the K Mart was being built, around 1990 if I remember right. Welcome to the downriver Detroit area! There is another Super K not far from this one in Taylor off of Van Born Road. Its abandoned now but Ford Mo Co. was using the building a few years back. The city of Taylor refused to re zone the property and Ford left the building.

You are awesome and entertaining, it is so cool you were in my meijer!!! what night and time was this? I probably had just punched out. If you would like I have a nice picture I took of the dairy section before and after remodel I would gladly send you!!! We were a former Kmart before 2003, there was a little Caesars inside at one time. As you can see Meijer is the first to have a meat section with no full service Meat Counter!!! along with the hot chicken it is all self serve after Meijer remodels. Deli and Bakery are the only counters to have customer service interactions!!! 50% of the meijers will be this way after remodel. Thanks for visiting I hope you had fun!!!!

    As said in the video, if you look this store up on Google, there are a lot of older pictures of this Meijer before the update around 2021 (I have seen it before they updated it). It is really cool and still had a lot of the old Kmart look(including one inside showing the Cafe with it's tables and chairs that they removed). They did a good job on the update, but I do still miss the old nostalgic, colorful Kmart look it used to have.

And then where the windows above produce are, that was an expansion. It used to be an outside open space. They also removed a good part of the original Kmart garden center for the pharmacy drive-thru.

    There are Meijer all over the place in Metro Detroit. I love that they're so convenient and prior to Covid many were open 24 hours. I love Meijer for their produce selection.

    Meijer. Vs walmart? Is Meijer owned by Kroger. I haven't looked it up yeat. Stince Kroger owns a ton of grocery stores chains from East coast to West coast.

    When they removed the dropped ceiling, they could have made the ceiling white instead of black
