Well .....like Alien Covenant.....everyone is being so....shift in direction and the same........well as what.....THE PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY is simply fantastic intelligent synth pop with fantastic hooks and so appreciated audible lyrics.....and Andy sounds l8ke he did in the 80's and that's freakin awesome.......so thankyou OMD for a fuckin super synth pop album with real time sensibility........

Great review, been a fan of OMD for many years and love this album. It's fantastic to see that young music fans are discovering OMD now and realising how influential they have been.

Organisation was the best Orchestral Manoeuvres album, give it a listen. I bought it in 1981, I was 15. After Dazzleships they lost their creativity and churned out stuff I couldn't be bothered to listen to. Still love them though

It does not suck to be young, be it I'm 17, and love OMD, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys. If this is your first time hearing a OMD record you came across a good one!!!!! Keep it up. P.S. If I must OMD cited Joy Division as an influence for Organization, also I agree Dazzle Ships is way underrated.

It seems like dazzle ships is the high point for them among musicians and people into the electronic/experimental scene. It's pretty obvious why it didnt gain as much commercial traction, but I'd hardly consider it underrated.

Hey Wonky. You are NOT A TRUE FAN OF OMD.
I am a 60 year old men. In 1983 I was at Sound Warehouse they were playing a great song. I ask the guy that at DJ booth
"What are you playing"? He said Telegraph by OMD. I said "Do you have a 12" to that"? No we have the album "DAZZLE SHIPS". Bought it. Just fell in love with album. Bought their early stuff and became A BIG FAN OF OMD. Could not wait for the next album. JUNK CULTURE was release LOVED IT. A 7"single came with the LP.It had a small hole. Did not know if I should play it on 45 or 331/3. Played it on both. The name of the tune is (The Angles Keep Turning )The Wheels Of The Universe.
ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK" LOVED IT. Songs like Bunker Soldiers, Julia's Song, Dancing. And all the tracks from that LP.
"ORGANISATION" LOVED IT. Songs like VCL XI, Promise, Stanlow. And all the tracks from that LP.
"ARCHITECTURE & MORALITY". Songs like Souvenir, Joan Of Arc, Joan Of Arc ( Maid Of Orleans). And All the tracks from that LP.
"DAZZLE SHIPS" LOVED IT. Songs like This Is Helena, International, Dazzle Ships(Parts II, III, VII)The Romance Of The Telescope. And all the tracks from that LP.
"CRUSH" LOVED IT. Songs like La Femme Accident,Women III. And all the tracks from that LP.
"THE PACIFIC AGE" LOVED IT. Songs like Southern, Goddess Of Love. And all the tracks from that LP.
"LABERATOR" LOVED IT. Songs like Sunday Morning, Agnus Dei. And all the tracks from that LP.
"SUGAR TAX" LOVED IT. Songs like Was It Some Thing I Said, Apollo XI. And all the tracks from that LP. Sugar Tax song was not included in the "SUGAR TAX LP.
"UNIVERSAL" LOVED IT. Songs like Walking On The Milky Way, The Gospel Of St Jude, Victory Waltz. Ans all the Tracks from that LP.
"HISTORY OF MODERN" LOVED IT.Songs like Sometimes, Pulse, Save Me. And all the tracks from that LP.
"ENGLISH ELECTRIC" LOVED IT. Songs like Helen Of Troy, Stay With Me, Final Song. And all the tracks from that LP.
"THE PUNISHMENT OF LUXURY" LOVED IT. Songs like What Have We Done, Precision And Decay, Art Eats Art, One More Time. And all the tracks from that LP.
Have you heard of VCR, AREA, THE NEW DARK AGE, 4 NEU, MATHEW STREET, ONCE WHEN I WAS SIX, TELSTAR, DRIFT. and a bunch of other tunes they have.
I have not found one track that I don't like.
I have ALL of OMD LP's and CD'S.
OMD should do the next James Bond. Adele's Skyfall and Shirly Bassey Diamonds Are Forever are the best. Anything after 1990 has sucked.
In my mind and ears OMD can do no wrong.
Oh I do play OMD music FULL BLAST when I'm in the car.

if what constitutes a "true fan" is loving literally every track a band or artist has ever released I don't think I could consider myself a "true fan" of any band or artist, and certainly not this one that I only just discovered like a few months ago, lol
but hey if you love them that much that's great :)

    • @georgehinojosa431

There are a lot of artist and bands that only have 3 or 4 good songs from the whole album.
The Beatles , Neil Diamond, Pink Floyd, OMD . Every track they have recorded sounds great.Well in the 90's Neil Diamond went down hill. He's albums still reached #1 on Billboard. Still bought them ,still unhappy.
There are a lot of artist and bands first albums are great and then down hill after that.
Group 87-A Carrer in Dadda Processing
      The Lightning Seeds-Cloudcuckooland
      Foster The People - Tourch
      And their are more.
You may not be a true fan of OMD. At least you are listen to them.
You are young. There is lots of time for you to discover old and new music.
I am still discovering music from the 40's 50's 60's and the 70's.
I get my music from You Tube
Back in the day OMD were close buddies with Kraftwerk and Joy Division.
      OMD open for Gary Numan.
Back then I was listen to Kraftwerk, 'cause There was no OMD.
It's a shame you don't know bubble gum music or Disco from Europe.
Well Wonky enjoy life and music.

Hey man, great review. Please ignore all the idiots in the comment section who want a medal for thinking they know this band better than you. You need to teach them what an opinion is.
Anyway, I enjoyed listening to your thoughts. I haven't heard every OMD album yet, but you've now helped inspire me to. I must say that this album is my favorite so far. "Ghost Star" has become one of my ALL TIME favorite songs. It's captivating.
Also, do you like a-ha? I'd like to know what you think about those guys. Great review, and keep it up!

Even though you said that you never really had a connection with 80s music there is one band I'm pretty sure you will love (if you don't know them already), and that is Yello. They are considered to be the fathers of techno music and, in my opinion, made some of the most interesting stuff in the electronic world. Their discography is pretty big but you got to check them put if you haven't, they are legends

    • @talkingtechno7315
      @talkingtechno7315 7 років тому +1

I think the fathers of techno are Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson

    • @nycology
      @nycology 7 років тому +2

You are right with that, as they are the first techno artists. But nevertheless Yello have this reputation to be one of the most important bands when it comes to "building" the characteristic techno sound (it wasn't intentionally though). The difference between Yello and Juan Atkins etc. is that they never really were a real techno band, but much more an experimental electro-pop duo. But their influence on the whole techno scene is pretty obvious, I recommend to listen to their songs "Bostich" and "Oh Yeah"

I really enjoyed your OMD review. I was an infrequent listener of OMD, leaning more toward Human League, Soft Cell, Kraftwerk, DEVO and ELO. Well Ralf AND Florian will not take a lawsuit. It would be Ralf only. Florian has left Kraftwerk. The song by Karl Bartos on the English Electric Album is Kissing the machine. Its written by Bartos/McCluskey and was released in the Bartos Project "Electric Music". You will always find similarities between Kraftwerk and OMD - and between Early Depeche Mode and Erasure .... OMD are not ripping Kraftwerk off - for sure.

    • @TheWonkyAngle
      @TheWonkyAngle  6 років тому

in literally any other case, even on this album, I would agree. but in the case of that one particular track it kinda went too far imo, like on Kissing The Machine they at least credit Karl Bartos as a writer and present it as a cover and not their own track, same with when they sampled Barry White on Liberator. but on Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Bang despite basically lazily combining two existing Kraftwerk tracks and calling it a day, they don't credit Ralf or Florian or anyone in Kraftwerk and try to pass it off as their own thing, and I just can't defend that
and yeah I know Florian's not in Kraftwerk anymore but he still co-wrote the track, if a lawsuit were to happen I imagine he'd get involved in some way (unless his relationship with Ralf went so sour they can't even bother to go through with it so as to avoid talking to each other, which is... admittedly also entirely a possibility)

Great review! It was really cool listening to a review from someone who doesnt have a nostalgia attached. Lyrically I find it interesting that they go from these very poppy love songs to songs that are really very pessimistic bordering on just outright nihilism. History of modern is fun, but christ it's like "okay, I get it, we are all going to die - noted."

Don’t you think that now OMD is Now still out there producing music and touring is a big achievement in it self for there age. It be on me why you feel the need to rip into OMD .
