This is What Innovation Looks Like

  • The P34 epitomises a period of extreme technological advancement (and extreme lapses in the rulebook) for Formula 1. The idea of a 6 wheeler competing today, let alone being competitive, is pure insanity, but compete it did, and competitive it was. This is the story of the Tyrrell P34.

    Formula has become a spec series appearance-wise. We're supposed to be excited over a slightly different side-pod or rear wing.

      Think youre confusing F1vwith Indy car. Its crazy that 10 differant teams can build their own car (even though some share parts ,they still have to build their own car ) and end up a few tenths apart time wise. The reason they look similar today isnt the lack of innovation but the regulations. The top 3 teams look vastly different. You cant say that the RedBull, Ferrari, and Mercedes look the same other than being open cockpit and wheels. Their design philosophies are all different ,but the lap times are very similar with the exception of Mercedes. And I'm truly thrilled that they cant get it right, and their dominance reign on F1 is finally over !!!

    I'm not sure how true it was, but apparently this layout was also very useful for wet weather as well. Apparently the front wheel would aquaplane like a normal car but this would push the water out the way for the 2nd set of wheels.
    Supposedly this is one of the reasons why Rolls Royce were testing a similar layout 6 wheel car around the same time

    Without a doubt my favourite F1 car - I just couldn't believe they actually put 6 wheels on a race car. There's a story of Scheckter suddenly losing some grip and not knowing why - when he got to the pits, one of the front wheels had just fallen off!
    Teams like Williams and March also tried 6 wheels although they put them at the back instead.

      Williams had actually struck gold with their design as the extended body extended the venturi tunnels and skirts of the ground effect car and made it immensely fast.

    Cool video! I remember hearing plenty in the past about the car having the windows in the cockpit sides so the spectators could watch the driver at work, this was BS as they were actually so the drivers could see the front tyre wear as they were not in the usual field of view due to the tiny diameter. A shame Ferrari, Williams and March never ran their 6 wheelers in period, they all had a slightly different idea behind them too.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I noticed the small windows while watching through the old footage. I had assumed it was for tyre monitoring, and I'm pretty sure F1 cars since have tried the same thing but off the top of my head I don't know which ones. As for the other 6-wheeled F1 concepts: they're very interesting. They may get a video of their own at some point

      It was also to see if the paint on the bead was visible. At high speed the tire would expand off the rim and deflate, so if you saw the paint through the window, you were at top speed

      The windows were because the original tyres were swelling off the rims and the drivers couldn't see them. Tiny wheels at high rpm generate huge rotation G's.

    What killed this design was the lack of tyre development by Goodyear. This was because they contracted out the tyre manufacturing to a Belgian company. That company was paid by Ferrari to not develop the tires any further.

    I totally agree with your headline. One hundred percent.
    As one who was enthralled by F1 from around 1960 all the way through to a couple of years after the death of Senna, I cannot abide the Formula as it is today nor as it has been over the past 20 years; the sameness of the designs, the telemetry and the way in which a lot of driver functions have become almost robotic.
    This car and all the others which clever designers came up with down the years should never have been banned or ruled out through rule changes.

    Well to my mind i think some of the regulations including the engine of the car should be more loose. Why should everyone have a V6 turbo hybrid? For example Audi developed a 4 cylinder engine with 600 bhp for the DTM and the classic 5 cylinder. Why should they have to produce a V6 turbo? There are regulations for the weight, aero all of them accepted but the engine they should let it a bit more loose.

    I wouldn't exactly refer to Ken Tyrrell as a genius - so he put six wheels on an F-1, big deal. The P-34 hardly set the world on fire success wise. F-1's real innovative genius was & always will be Colin Chapman and Lotus.

    • @automobilistic
      @automobilistic  Рік тому +3

      It was a big deal though. Just because an idea doesn't yield world changing success doesn't mean it wasn't a worthwhile endeavour. It was a creative solution to a known problem that nobody else had thought to try, and that should be celebrated. What's the point in motorsport if we look down on innovation?

  • @MidTennPews
    @MidTennPews Рік тому +2

    When the FIA killed innovation of any kind they killed the sport. It's not about racing anymore it's about putting on a billion dollar circus centered around sports "entertainment". NASCAR is doing the same things. They say F1 is the top motorsport yet it's boring and overdramatic. V8 supercars is better imo.
