Have you seen Victorian Farm? It's not a period drama, but it is fun, and relaxing to watch. Historians work on a Victorian era farm using acurate tools, methods and clothing. They talk about the research and timeline of different inventions. My 6 year old wanabe-farmer son loves it.

Absolutely. The time travelling gets a little silly to me at times, but gosh did they make a real effort as far as what life was like for these people to live in this time. The characterisations are fantastic and wonderfully detailed. I couldn't get through the first book though, due to how dry the read was for me; which is a shame because I adore reading.

I would like to recommend “A Discovery of Witches”, when we talk period clothing, I beleive that season 2 has some of the finest examples. I was also impressed by the likeness of Queen Elisabeth I to the paintings of her in old age. Anyway this show is NOT a teenage vampire/ warewulf show. It’s grownups and tuned down a lot. Great actors! HBO is releasing episodes of S3 (which will prob. be the last season) as we speak.

Thank you for providing the link to the article! I loved your and Jamie's suggestions! There are so many to choose from that I finally decided on what I would not watch and I only came up with one....The Yorkshire Ripper. I would never sleep again if I watched that. I was hoping to see the return of "Dickensian" on the list but was disappointed to see it was not there. That series, in my opinion, was the best period drama BBC One ever produced. I will definitely watch "Great Expectations" and "Dodger" to satisfy my Dickens cravings. I hope you and yours are staying safe during your stormy weather. Prayers.

Now I know that Reign was lacking in authenticity but since you brought up Samantha Morton portraying Catherine de Medici did you see Megan Follows' portrayal of Catherine? We all loved her as Anne of Green Gables, but she was an absolutely, gorgeously, poisonous queen. Watching her as a young girl play a sweet, albeit precocious, child and then 30 years later she shows she's got the chops to portray such a powerful woman, it was a true treat.

As an American Anglophile for at least 50 years ( I got my start with the King Arthur stories as a child ), as far as British television, you make it and I’ll watch it. The dream of a lifetime is coming up next Fall when my husband and I will take a tour of England, Scotland, and Ireland (I’m half Irish.) I’ll be watching all of your suggestions, in fact I watch all that air here in the US. Your husband’s picks also look very interesting. I’m afraid that I agree with him on Bridgerton. I don’t dislike it because I never saw it, having absolutely no interest in the topic. I watch every upload that you make and am enjoying them all but I love the ongoing historical newsy updates (ie. The Benin Bronzes) because of the archeological discoveries and views. Thank you, Dr. Kat

I don't subscribe to BritBox so I get most of my BBC productions from PBS. A show I've been really enjoying that kind of combines period drama & detective/mystery is Endeaver. It's set in Oxford during the 60s & the set pieces, cars & costumes are so amazing. Plus, I mean it's Oxford--it's gorgeous scenery & architecture. The acting is top notch, the writing is good & it's interesting to see historical events like the Kennedy assassination or the moon landing play out in the background against the main plot & interpersonal drama of the episode. I realize it's not medieval or renaissance or regency period but the 60s definitely had a look, especially in London :) So if you like murder mysteries & you like period dramas with social commentary, you'll probably like Endeavor.

The two i haven't seen mentioned and would like to for anyone who makes it down to the bottom of the comment lists are:
The Borgias ft Jeremy Irons is still my favorite bit of Western fanfic about power manipulations, (it seems to tick several boxes that GoT ppl might like, but what do I know). It's older tho.
And Empress of China is another one that i love that's older, it isn't western, it is another fanfic, but its another power grab story and I'm here for that. It's about Wu Zetian, who was/is the only Empress regnant of China....

I’m really excited for Becoming Elizabeth, but I’m always apprehensive of (especially Tudor-era) period pieces before I’ve seen the trailer as I feel they’re often overly sexualised. So many shows with a great history to build a plot on, interesting characters and amazing intrigue and politics will often put that aside for often-unnecessary sexuality, as if we need that to make it interesting. I absolutely loved how in The Great they kind of made a joke of that aspect of period shows in a way that actually adds to the tone and humor of the show

I feel you about the wait for Call the Midwife- as an American, I won't get season 11 for another month (the spoilers are *killing me*!)
The Gilded Age is definitely worth a watch. I love that it focuses on the socitial politics of the age. So many series either ignore or belittle all the interpersonal relationships and struggles that women in this era devoted their lives to. It's fascinating to see how all the female characters react to it- whether by fighting against it, struggling to uphold it, or even using it to their advantage. Additionally, there's an "Ida B. Wells" type character, and I can't wait to see how her story develops!

Around the World in 80 Days helped me through the last lockdown, and I've rewatched the Sally Wainwright (Unforgiven, Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley) masterpiece Gentleman Jack season 1 in anticipation of season 2.
I'm interested to see if Vikings: Valhalla can recapture the magic of the first 4 seasons of Vikings, and I'm definitely watching Anne. Thanks to your husband for the recommendation. I loved the novels 'Great Expectations' and 'The Essex Serpent', let's see if the adaptations can do them justice. And last but not least, I can recommend 'The Last Kingdom' to all history buffs. (5th season now available on Netflix)

Just finished binge watching The Pallisers, from the 1974 BBC production. 26 episodes of pure heaven. Intelligent, lovely costumes and sets, and good plot, of course, since it is adapted from Trollope. And it's on UA-cam.

What an excellent video. I'd love you to do one for books too. It's interesting (and sad) to see Taboo S2 hasn't appeared yet. The first series of that was bizarre but compelling viewing. I'm afraid now I've seen Wolf Hall, I find all other historical dramas lacking. I'm desperate for them to make Bring Up The Bodies and The Mirror and The Light.

The Gilded Age is really AWESOME. Worth the watch. It is slow but hang in there. The first to episodes we are just "getting acquainted" with the characters and time period.

I love period dramas and almost all of the from the UK. Though we have some great ones in Canada as well. I loved Frankie Drake, all female cast set in the 30-40's Toronto. Only 4 seasons but so worth it! Never watched Bridgerton, or Game of Thrones. One called Ripper Street set in London was amazing! Not just about Jack but all the other notable news of the day, back then. I find a lot of the ones on PBS and CBC Gem to be very entertaining! Highly, highly recommend Downton Abbey and Outlander.
And you sent me on a rabbit hole reading all I could about the Hillsborough Tragedy. It happen when I was 20 and not fully aware of the bigger world around me. I am not a football, soccer, fan I am disgusted by the way those who should have been in charge did everything they could to 'flip the narrative' onto the fans. I send blessing to the families they may one day find peace.
    Thanks for a great channel!

Thank you very much, yes I enjoyed hearing your list and that of your husband. I have my favourites but have to wait until I can find them on the web as I live in Panama. Favourites: Midwives, PEAKY BINDERS, anything like Downton Abbey, wishing passionately there would be a sequel to Wolf Hall!

Interesting, I'm deffo with Jamie re Brigerthingy. I'm a costumier and I can't deal with it visually. I also can't deal with it in terms of social mores. lol. Anyway I'll keep an eye out for some that you've mentioned and hope that they get to Aus soon.

I found Bridgerton to be such an outrage, costume-wise, plot-wise, dialogue-wise, and you name every other thing about it and I didn't like it. I lasted all of 5 minutes before I turned it off in disgust.

To my huge surprise, I am enjoying Around the World in 80 days which is just now being shown on PBS in the USA. I don't know if I have ever gotten through even one episode of Call the Midwife without ugly crying. I loved the books too. Felt like I could deliver a baby myself after reading them. Reading/avoiding the spoilers from the UK has been tough as we have no idea when we're getting this latest season in the USA. I don't know what you all thought of All Creatures Great and Small but it was one of my favorite book series when I was a child and I loved the original series. This one is okay. I liked Callum Woodhouse from The Durrells and loved Gerry Durrells book. Bridgerton was a guilty pleasure for me but I won't be watching the new one as I gave up Netflix for Paramount+ and Star Trek Discovery and Picard. I also loved Ash on Discovery.

I love period dramas, even if I end up ranting at the screen because of inaccuracies and other tired tropes. I keep hoping that one day, some writer and director will produce a historical show that is really grounded in history. Anyway, I like you list a lot (except for Bridgeton) but would have added 'Gentleman Jack', 'Dead Still' and 'Outlander'
