I'm really looking forward to this game, but there's one thing: the environments should have some kind of cel-shading, it would make everything come together way better.
This is kind of an art style that will never get 'outdated'. Those types of productions (like TF2) pretty much never die, and stay 'fresh' forever. A good sign for this title.

No! It would conflict with the characters that way. Besides these cartoons would always paint the backgrounds while the foreground objects that were to move and characters were drawn. This is definitely what the game was going for
I would have to disagree. I think level design work well for the game, I think it give that golden age feel where the background would usually be painted.
I know you mean well, but a lot of older cartoons (even cartoons up to the 80s-90s) had no "cel-shaded" backgrounds because they were usually hand painted static images with lots of detail. Like hotcoldman mentioned, only characters, moving objects, and items the characters would interact with would get that "cel-shaded" look (that bold, thick outlines simple colors look). It's why in cartoons like Scooby-Doo or animes like Dragonball we know which object was about to move as they were animated on a separate plane from the painted background.
@@hotcoldman77 exactly, I think the same as you... In the old black and white cartoons the backgrounds were hand painted, which marked a clear difference between the environment and the animated character, even sometimes the backgrounds seemed to have a 3D perspective in watercolor without thick lines and blurred shading while the character and other animated objects were always 2D cartoon with thick lines and without shading, very similar to this one video game.
