  • John Doran meets the critically acclaimed British director and hero of the kitchen-sink drama to explore the motivations and artistic method behind Mike Leigh's classics. Through his films about ordinary people Leigh has a knack for capturing the socio-political zeitgeist of difficult times in British history. Is the apocalyptic nature of Leigh’s early works Bleak Moments, Meantime and Naked more relevant than ever today?

Fuckin love this guy and his films. One of cinema's greatest sages. Naked just blew me away. I still go back to it every now and then. For all of its in-your-face visceral transgression, there's definitely something extremely subtle and artful and kind of magical about it.

Naked (1993) with David Thewlis is one of the best independent movie in the 90s. I remember I rented it from a video store at that time because there was rent one get one free special. Never regretted picking up that movie ever since. Seen it again on blue-ray, and it is still a fun ride to see it again.

    Happy go lucky
    Another year
    Topsy turvy
    Naked
    Maybe they're all tied.

It's cheesy and disingenuous for VICE to disown the interviewer and act like the corporation (VICE) is a person, in this case the nameless interviewer. Oh, look "Sheraton Hotels Talks Film With Mike Leigh."

I love Mike Leigh's films but I can't believe he said that about The War Zone! It was such a beautifully compassionate and real film. If you weren't sexually abused as a kid you shouldn't allude to knowing more about it than someone who actually was (Tim Roth).

great filmmaker, must admit don't like all the films I've seen but vera drake, happy go lucky, and another year are brilliant pieces of gem. saw all or nothing, life is sweet which I didn't like too much, and sure do hope to see the films mentioned here. he is britian's equivalent to fellini, bergman, and great auteurs like almodovar, Scorsese, and Polanski though. check out his speech when he got some lifetime achievement award from the bafta's it was flipping brilliant!

The only film of his I've seen so far is Mr. Turner and aside from the gorgeous cinematography I didn't really like it all that much. Still, I bet he's got some great work in his catalog and maybe I'll give Mr. Turner another shot one day.

    • @johnhein2539

I've heard he doesn't like his own "Abigail's Party," 1977, anymore but it's an amazing film. One of Stanley Kubrick's favorites, and inspired Louis CK to make his new show, "Pete and Horace." The film really showcases his great writing for characters to slowly reveal themselves through dialogue and through their silences. I believe Leigh dislikes it because it feels a little derivative of Harold Pinter's mysterious writings and Who's Afraid of the Virginia Woolf? But honestly, those sources don't own the rights to viciously bickering married couples, and mysterious plot elements.
Give it a try, the ending made my eyes widen in shock.
