Having flipped snow throwers, both riding and push lawnmowers over the past 30+ years I suggest installing an inline fuel filter on any gas operated equipment if there’s room for one. Those small particles will clog the jets in the carburetor. Thanks for the video very informative and interesting.
I bet you have seen some interesting things! This design has one in the tank that sits at an angle but there is no room since the line runs right along side the governor linkage all the way to the carburetor. Thanks for watching!
Okay, tomorrow morning first thing I’m going down to the shop and running my pickup magnet over the floor. If what I find on the magnet looks like rust I’ll be reporting back. I must have been imagining all these years whenever I cleaned off magnets from all the rust on them. 😉
Always appreciate shop tours, Martin. Did a Google street view walk around recently and admired the total paint job. I wondered how good the food was at the place next door. The prices looked great!
Haha I appreciate that! The total paint job was supposed to take me and the guys a few days and it took three weeks by the time we got it done. Darn paint was peeling so bad every square inch had to be pressure washed off over God knows how many coats but I agree it looks so much better now! They are good people over there
Martin is absolutely correct in my opinion. Not only on the magnet but the quality of the cheap Chinese steel. Most people don't know that American made steel is made to American standards of quality. What are they you ask? Two professional industry groups primarily; the American iron and steel institute commonly known as AISI, and the American society for metals, or ASM. Unfortunately the Chinese cheat on all goods that they manufacture. Instead of using the high quality alloying steel as specified in the quality control standards, they simply don't provide enough of those critical alloying steel materials such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel, carbon, etc. and the end result is poor quality steel that oxidizes or rusts very fast. The second thing that the Communist Chinese do is that they could care less about corrosion. They use the cheapest quality materials and coating systems. All they care about is selling the product, not the quality or the longevity. And American companies are losing market share so they are simply interested in the cheapest parts they can buy. As long as it gets past the warranty period and people don't hold the manufacturer accountable, then it's a race to the bottom unless one originally purchases a high-quality machine. By the way Martin it's absolutely outstanding to see you organizing your shop. It's reflected in your videos as well because they look better!!! Happy holidays to you and your family, take care.
Definitely agree there! It has taken a long time to get everything just right but I think we are pretty close to being there! Thanks for noticing! We finally have a good system in place and more changes (both shop and video wise) are in the schedule this winter season! Thanks as always for your on-point and detailed comment explaining what I don't go into nearly this much detail about!

LOL, remember backin the 80's, they were selling "Fuel Saver Magnets" for cars and trucks that strapped alongside the fuel line before it entered the carburetor? Maybe this is the same "technology" LOL.
Haha I remember so many of these different methods they were selling with the same claims that never worked! I am just surprised they haven't cut the few cents worth out of the cost. They are awesome at doing that in more cases
Frist, Craftsman does not mean quality anymore. You could say you get what you pay for, but I would not even go that far. I had to replace the deck on my new Craftsman rider due to my fault. Hit a boulder with the deck edge and through the alignment off. ordered a replacement and came as a Cub Cadet. Both made by MTD as well as other brands. Second, doesn't the blower have a fuel filter?
Fuel filter in the tank about 3 inches away to the left if facing from the front. MTD makes so many of these anymore under 10 plus brand names mowers, snowblowers and more under Craftsman, Troy Bilt, Cub Cadet, Bolens, Snapper, Dewalt etc. All just branding junk
Rust (iron oxide) seems to be magnetic for purposes of gas tank corrosion, but not magnetic for purposes of cleaning the rust off the magnet on the flywheel! Go figure
I’ll take this one, Martin. 😉 Rust is irrelevant on flywheels except for purposes of setting the air gap. Rust buildup could cause one to leave too large of a gap unless removed to get the actual gap dimension. Rust is magnetic, but in this case it has zero effect on the signal the magneto picks up as it passes by the magnet.
Interesting! When I see them all rusted out there is quite a bit on the magnet but I never knew. Wonder why the put them in there. That is super interesting. Thanks for sharing!
We have 5 full time employees currently including me. This consists of three mechanics a driver and an office person. I appreciate that! We are super happy to have the shop here. We ran the business out of a two car attached garage of my house in the middle of town for 10 plug years so it is a huge upgrade! How we lasted that long there is beyond me
Like every other one out there it seems. I would think it could be cheaper to manufacture also if they did but then they would not go bad like the metal ones do and sales would go down
I believe so, not sure it helps much unless you are dispensing from a metal / rusty tank but I have seen some pretty bad tank qualities over the last 5 years. The Westinghouse ones seem even worse
@@IndRepair throw a small chain or some nuts and bolts in the old rusty one.Add some hot water and dish detergent or gas. Shake it good and hard , drain, rinse and repeat until water runs clean. Run clean hot water in it and air dry. Spray with wd 40 or add a small bit of two stroke oil in the next batch of gas. This will work as long as you dont have any pinholes. Also you can get a very strong magnet from an old discarded computer disc drive.

Good find.
Considering it’s directly under the fill, it may also be for dropped hardware.
Never really thought about that but it is definitely possible hmm

Nice shop brother, I've never seen a magnet in a tank of course I've never seen a snow blower either. 🙂👍
I hear that one! Thank you I appreciate that! Ha! You must be somewhere warmer than here!

@@IndRepair If possible, I world put an inline real fuel filter before the carb. I think the one in the tank may just be a screen.
@@d.l.harrington4080 It is just a screen, although pretty fine. On these there is no room for one between the tank and carburetor unfortunately

Rust is not magnetic. Therefore, a magnet is of no use in attracting tank rust.
Interesting! When I see them all rusted out there is quite a bit on the magnet but I never knew. Wonder why the put them in there. That is super interesting. Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if maybe there is still some unrusted metal left making them still be attracted?
Poor Quality people only get caught Once.
I know thats right!

Cheap Chinese engines. Why wouldn't they use a plastic tank?

can you just put any magnet in a tank

Long nose plyers. Not needle nose.
I have always seen them sold as needle nose pliers but you could be correct amzn.to/4g8X0fj
