    My pound rescue red heeler is my fourth cattle dog, two reds and two blues as well as a couple of orphaned wild born Australian Dingoes just to add some spice. All lived well into their teens and I carried them in their final weeks. My current red girl was a feral scrub dog about to be euthanized after she was trapped. All she wanted was to belong and know that she's loved.

      Hey my name is Heather I now have a red heeler and I rescued him 1 week ago and I love him so much but I need some tips/suggestions. I have a fenced in yard but he's able to jump the fence. I took him to the vet and they wouldn't even see him.

      @@heatherthompson226 I had to put an overhang on the fences if that makes sense, to stop them gripping the top to clamber over. The vet obviously doesn't understand that a rescue dog can take up to three months to feel belonged and settled. My red took quite a while to realise that she wasn't going anywhere. Good luck and don't give up, wish I had some answers for you.

    • @heatherthompson226
      @heatherthompson226 Рік тому

      @Fast Eddie thank you I will look into that, I've even bought a book to read to help with him, the only thing the vet would do is prescribe him gabapentin 300mg twice a day and trazadone twice a day.

      @@heatherthompson226 Sorry I couldn't be of more help. But persevere and just remember he may have been through a hard time before you rescued and it may take time. Once you have that trust the bond and friendship formed will be more than worth the initial struggle. As you've no doubt discovered, cattle dogs are a breed unto their own. My current dingo was found in the bush after his parents were killed and it took a good nine months for him to even begin to trust me, but like my red they are both now my shadows.

    My first Blue Heeler was a rescue. An amazing dog, loyal. I ended up getting a puppy 5 years ago and yes of course it was a Blue Heeler. Amazing, my older one helped train my puppy. We lost our rescue a couple years ago at the age of 12. We were heart broken. My healers are the most loyal, smart, living, great protectors. Listen so well. The best breed, I've ever owned.

    I'm on my second healer. I run in the desert every morning and there are quite a few coyotes. I was really concerned when one of the coyotes started stalking me. I was even more concerned when my healer saw it and took off after him. He ran the coyote off several times. The coyote looked as big as my healer. Through the years I have realized coyote's want nothing to do with blue healers. I love these guys.

    My blue heeler was all orange and black. He really shined like it. He saved my life by keeping me away from a Creek bed that had holes in it, and there were coyotes in there. He kept hitting my knees to move me to another direction, and he stand at a halt until I moved and walked away and he kept watching and looking around for anything else. He really saved my life that day. I wish I had another one. I love them so much. They are so gentle they recognize family immediately. They are kind. And gentle, but they’re understands when they need to be. I loved him and I missed him.❤

    Heelers are the best dogs ever! No exceptions. After years of "regular dogs" my wife's father introduced me to the smartest person I had met, only the 'person' turned out to be his cattle dog, Rocky. My wife's father is a cattle rancher who uses heelers as per their cattle dog breed design. So impressed was I with Rocky, I now have four heelers...all were red-zone rescues given up as "too aggressive," biters, unsafe... non-human friendly. With some work, they all became full members of our family. Neo Blake's comments (below) are right on the money. Heelers have very special requirements that other non-cattle dog breeds do not. They should come with a warning sign that describes the dogs in detail. Brutally smart and energetic, be ready to spend a good deal of time trying to stay mentally ahead of your heeler, as they are constantly testing boundaries. Being the leader of your pack is mandatory with a heeler, as Neo points out. If not, your heeler will take charge and that leads to you being part of his pack...which is why so many end up in rescues. So if you are smart, energetic and ready for a challenge, the heelers are the best dogs over, no exception!!

    I had ALWAYS wanted a heeler but never had the space for one. So when I finallly did, we got one almost immediately! I was so excited... until...LOL
    I think I threatened to get rid of him a thousand times in the first 18mos. Then, like a light switch he became the best dog I have EVER had! You couldn't offer me a million bucks or more for him. He is the most loyal creature currently living on the planet, and he absolutely makes me want more pups of this breed. The shedding, puppy destruction, inability to "talk" about getting into the trash because he knows he's guilty and hides(LOL).... it's ALL worth it.
    I grew up with GSDs and I thought they were the best dog ever... until our heeler "Ammo".
    Do yourself a favor. Get into a position in life where you can have one as a companion. It will be one of the greatest gifts you ever give yourself! ❤

    Pretty good overall, I wanted to clear stuff up that wasn't covered (as a blue heeler owner and college student who did a research project on them). Most of these things stated are true, but these guys should come with a HUGE WARNING if you are inexperienced at all with dogs, they give experienced dog trainers a run for their money. because people buy these dogs because they look cute, and are smart, they are in the top 10 dog breeds most found in shelters in the US. You NEED to be consistent in training as they will test boundaries every few months and if they learn they can get away with stuff, they will take full advantage of that. I also disagree that they are good family dogs because even if one person is not consistent with the rules, that rule no longer exists to them. from their breeding to herd cows these things NIP a LOT. you need to address it right away and even give them something to destroy to get their energy out, (I use cardboard boxes) because if you don't, they will destroy your house. they also need to be separation trained because these guys are so loyal they have been known to chew through walls to search for their owner. They also need a job to help out with to stimulate their brain or they will come up with a job of their own that can turn into aggression to protect you, if not trained right these guys can kill other dogs which can make someone put down your dog for the safety of their community. they also need to be worked every day, (at least when they are young and full of energy) I do not have an off day from training my girl. These guys are extremely intense in everything they do and are basically dogs on extreme hard mode. should you train them right, yes these can be amazing dogs and companions. Love these guys, but had to put the disclaimer out there.

    I have a half Australian Shepherd, half Blue Heeler, and he is definitly intense, brave, protective, very smart, and alert, but he is not tireless nor is he very athletic. He loves his naps! He will always get up to take a walk, run at the park or play with his big red ball, but he does everything in spurts, and takes a lot of rests. I DO NOT recommend the Blue Heeler breed for first-time dog owners, as they are very aggressive as puppies and do not outgrow that until 2-4 years of age, unless you want to go through dog boot-camp and train them out of a lot of biting!😀😄

They prefer to work solo, are very independent and make their own decisions, will bite children, only bond with 1 human, very high prey drive with small animals/children. Not friendly to strangers. They solve problems by biting first. Sigma.
