ORS is a life saving drug. It is to be given to both children and adults during episodes of diarrhoea and vomiting to prevent dehydration, shock and death.Only those sachets containing the WHO recommended formula ORS get the approval from Drug Controller General of India.Some companies are mislabeling their energy drinks as ORS or something similar to ORS (QRS),getting permission from the FSSAI and selling them in the pharmacies and supermarkets.These are the tetrapacks prominently displayed in most pharmacies. People mistake them for the actual drug,the WHO recommended formula ORS and take the drink and/or give the drink to their children during episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea.The high sugar content in these drinks worsens the diarrhoea and these drinks inadequately replace the salt content in the body; and thus increase the severity of diarrhoea, vomiting, and the related complications like dehydration, shock and death.
After multiple representations from doctors and activists, FSSAI has issued a directive on the 8th of April under section 16(5), where it was clearly mentioned that drinks without approval from the DCGI cannot use 'ORS' on their labels under sections 23 and 24 of FSS act 2006 and that the companies are punishable under FSS act sections 52 and 53,if the companies continue with selling MISBRANDED drinks.
Inspite of this,the only drinks you see prominently displayed in medical shops and supermarkets are ORS L, Rebelanz Vit ORS, Fruitnik electroplus ORS,ORS Fit etc. Infact,on ORS L, somewhere lower down, it is mentioned in a very small font 'Do not use during Diarrhoea' or 'Electrolyte drink Not an ORS'; and these are the drinks you all are being deceived into buying and giving to your kids!!!
