    I watched Mr. Wizard back in the 1950 all the time including the reruns. I give Don Herbert the credit that I acquired an avid interested in science and technology; which lead to my multiple careers in electricity, electronics, and eventually information technology. Oh, also an amateur astronomer through my teens years.
    We need more teachers like Mr. Herbert. May you rest in peace Don knowing your enthusiastic work lead to thousands if not tens of thousands of young men and women becoming scientists and engineers, both professionally and amateur.

    The original Mr. Wizard sparked an interest in science in me that has never died.

    I was Alan's best man when he was married in Griffith Park, in Los Angeles, in the late '70s. He was my best man when my wife and I were married on the Queen Marny, in Long Beach, CA, in '85. Over the years we had blind-sided each other by telling waitresses that it was the other guy's birthday to embarrass one of us with the singing and free cake or ice-cream. At my wedding reception, I had the wedding cake delivered to him and everyone sang "happy birthday". That was my biggest "get" ever!

      This is not a 'Rube goldberg' layout you daft twit. This machine served an educational purpose of illustrating various ways of propagating a circuit. A 'Rube Goldberg' machine is useless and serves no purpose other than dumbing down science and misinforming people for amusement and entertainment. +John landis and +Jeenks K , name dropping a charlatan Jew for the purpose of sounding smart makes you anything but.

    Is it just me, or does it seem like the kids knew less and less at around the same ages as this show went on through the years. No wonder Mr. Wizard seemed grumpy towards the end.

      There was more apathy towards the sciences as time went on. We now have the technology to access massive amounts of information, now ignorance is choice.

      I thought the same thing...and kids these days might recognize the spoon..but the rest of that would have been “stuffs” and “thingies”...after two minutes, they would have been on their phone and crying on Facebook about the mean old guy that’s making them feel stupid....and scared...

    Alright, throwing myself to the mercy of mass troll attack, but I thought Mr. Wizard's debut was on Nickelodeon's "Mr. Wizard's World" in the 80's. I had no idea Don Herbert was on TV before then.

      Same here. I remember Science Channel doing a double marathon of "Watch Mr Wizard" and "The Secret Life of Machines" during the summer of 2004, which is how I first found them.

      Bill Nye and Beakman did teach science through their respective shows while trying to entertain viewers at the same time. Mr Wizard was more about the facts behind whatever he was showing. The two methods of teaching were different, but they were both effective as well.

    Just needs about thousand smash cuts, a pop-up glossary for terminology, and an obnoxious narrator adding hip slang and worn-out platitudes to add "color". I love old documentaries like this one, where pacing is natural and people can take time to explain concepts in detail.

    • @Observ45er
      @Observ45er 10 років тому +7

      Don't forget the music that is about 15 dB too loud so it obscures the narraton.
      It used to be called "talk over". NOW it is "Talk Under" ...!

    I was an 80s Mr. Wizard Kid. Bill Nye is ok and all, but Mr. Wizard put it in a way that didn't distract my ADD addled mind with flashy graphics and disjointed delivery trying to pack too much of a concept all at once. I attribute my high level of systems understanding to watching Mr. Wizard as much as possible from age 4 till about 9 or 10 then I watched Nova and NatGeo documentaries when Mr. Wiz was pulled from the air in my area.

    BTW, It's obvious that the "Professor Proton" character on The Big Bang Theory was based on Don Herbert's "Mr Wizard" .

    • @CharlieTechie
      @CharlieTechie 6 років тому

      The difference was Mr. Herbert was a real scientist, while Professor Proton was just an actor playing a scientist, and yes, I know Big Bang is just a TV show but thought it was worth mentioning.

    Rube Goldberg is proud.

    • @Pequenorey13
      @Pequenorey13 7 років тому +1

      Goldberg was a typical Jewish moron who contributed nothing to society. This illustrates various means of propagating a circuit for a very real reason, rather than just having a pointless over-complicated mess.
      This is truly educational. Rube Goldberg was a charlatan who invented nothing and made comic strips of nonsensical machines that weren't based in reality.
