Just a note, that picture at 19:35 is not a graphic, it is an actual picture of AJ translating the old-school spells into modern day 5e context. On top of the recording and finding all those pictures, and the madman did it in like a day or two. If that alone isn't worth a like on the video and maybe a subscription to the channel, idk what is.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the channel challenge to get part 1 of the History of Netheril, we missed the mark by a little bit but AJ was generous enough to give it to us anyways. Plus there is a part 3 planned somewhere down the line. If you want to get that, share this video around, lets get this discussion going.
As promised, the links.

The Phaerimm (Those will be very important soon i suspect): ua-cam.com/video/ns74mLCUazs/v-deo.html
Also for those wondering, I would have included all the spells he listed for each of the arch-mages, but the post would have been twice as long and that is saying something. Suffice to say there are more, a lot more in the video.
The Phaerimm? Why should we worry about the Phaerimm? It’s not like they play a major role in Netherese history or anything....
Justin Baskall Congrats on getting AJ to make the video. This is fanservice at its finest.
And thank you for doing all of the time stamps. You are a life saver for those of us who rewatch these videos for prep when DMing or coming up with campaign ideas.
Yep, can confirm Justin got this video made.
And what about Karsus?
Thank you for all that you do my friend
Imagine being one of the last netheril spell jammer ships in operation, returning from space and your empire is just gone
That is a great start to a campaign
Coming back with hostiles on your tail
@@AJPickett I wonder what happened to Spelljammer ships during Karsus' Folly. Are Spelljammer ships affected by The Weave?
@@dm_ex_machina3395 no they operate independently of the weave.
@@dm_ex_machina3395 Even then, if they were out of Realmspace during the event, they wouldn't even notice the effect.
I always loved the idea of making a floating city and if I could I would. However I would secure my little floating island with sturdy chains connected to surrounding mountains just in case it did decide to fall out of the sky.
Crono trigger vibes
Another incredibly enjoyable video! My 4 month old son also enjoys listening to your videos.
I am going to once again humbly request an ecology of Primordials if you would be so kind.
Master Pickett, I would very much enjoy a part three. Especially considering the possibilities available near the end of Rime of the Frostmaiden. Your videos are always a huge help and the little embellishments help paint wonderful pictures in my head. I would be remiss if we missed out on the final part of the 'greatest' empire of faerun. Thank you for all of your efforts.
Noted!
3:51 Congenio Ione, Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather to the Great Sage AJ Pickett.
Magna Camara!
Exploring the desert searching for a crashed Netherese city to retrieve the Mythallar sounds like a fun quest!
The video game Neverwinter Nights second module "Shadows of Undrentide" is about that very subject, Scott Mcley. If your interested in that kind of stuff. Although AD&D can go much more in depth. Also SOU as it became known was done under 3e rules. You start out as a 1st level character and end up between 15th to 17th level. Just remember this is a 15 or 16 year old video game.
Happy New Year 2077 ! You're all breathtaking! ;)

Wonderful.
Fantastic narrative. As a huge fan of Faerun's history and D&D gamer since the 'red box' age (36 years), I love your videos and enthusiasm. Right on right on brother.
Wow! I just found your channel tonight..and just finished part 1!

It,s been great year of D&D lore see you next year AJ
Thumbnail says part three, video says part 2! Heads up aj!!
Thanks, spotted that immediately this time, ha ha ha... my brain.
Thank you! This gives me incredible ideas for my campaign.
As soon as you mentioned there's a campaign setting my imagining kickstarted. I like to think this would be a deadly fun campaign setting, all the archanists dueling and back stabbing almost in a Westeros kind of way, and giving my players a chance to literally invent spells not just ask if they can change or combine existing ones
Absolutely!
Netherese, FR's famous mago facists human empire of pure arcane mastery.
Mr Pickett you are now my reference whenever I pick up a Salvatore novel and have no idea what a "shade" is or something similar.
Netheril is an interesting empire as are its archmages. I will stop saying my ancient archmages are OP and now say they are boring. Netheril would have a hard time translating to Loom of Magus in the way of spell levels. In Loom of Magus, all spells above level 9 in power are level 10... the only issue is cost and difficulty. Like the 10th level spell Wish II (aka Gods' Wish, Genie High Wish, Advanced Wish, Break Reality, etc) can do just about anything... it's a negotiation between DM and player. It has the negative side-effects and other costs of Wish (9th level) only the negotiation is what else the player is willing to pay up, going from a mere double negative of Wish to sacrificing his life to having other spellcasters cast Wish or Wish II in the same spellcasting, etc. Also, like other 10th level spells (I use a MP system), more MP's may be required to attain the effect. Generally, wizards cast spells costing 1 MP per spell level. Level 10 spells usually cost 10 MP but they can be higher.
Very interesting stuff! I hope the next one covers Rhaugilath the Ageless and his unique form of lichdom. He and Larloch have long been favorites of mine.
I will be sure to include him, thanks for the suggestion.
@@AJPickett I haven't had much luck finding lore on him beyond the bare bones of a very interesting story. He does appear in the module "Those That Came Before", with some DM notes on portraying him. Other than that I've only seen a sentence here and there acknowledging this LG lich arch-rival of Larloch, who deserves better!
As you mentioned in your intro, this is indeed one of my favorite things to listen to during my daily commute. I base a lot of the content in my Homebrew campaign on what I learn through this video series. You have truly been a great influence on my work thank you.

OH MY GOD YES! Your first video was exactly what I was looking for and I needed so much more! Cheers and Happy New Year AJ!
I just had to laugh at the thought of that many toilets emptying into the plane of fire. I can imagine more than a few Efreeti being very upset about the implied insult.
I need sleep right now but I will finish this video soon
Need an entire segment on Ioulaum!!
Netheril legendary land.I want a mtg netheril set
Netheril is approximately/analagous to the Thran Empire.
This is exactly what I needed
Considering their penchant for conflict, I find it the utter lack of martial magics to be quite telling of the Netherese perspective.
Spells in the vein of Haste, Tenser's Transformation, Steel Wind Strike, either of the thunder or fire blade cantrips, and many other defensive, offensive, and augmentative spells would have likely proved enormous boons in their continued conflicts.
Even the Shield spell (a remarkably simple and obvious idea), if I recall correctly, was not made for combat against martial opponents, but rather invented by Karsus as a defense against another of his spells, Magic Missile.
Considering their greatly extended lifespan, the Netherese wizards certainly had sufficient time to develop martial and physical prowess, and one certainly can't question the efficacy of the combination- particularly for a society so perpetually steeped in combat- when considering the astounding feats of both the Gish and the elven Bladesingers, neither of which could match both the potential longevity and intensity of the Netherese practice.
One can only conclude then, that they must have either been too caught up in the continual competition for status to focus on such a practical concern, or that they viewed such forms of combat as being beneath them. I suspect some potent combination of the two.
How many great mages saw their time cut short, or even ended before it had truly begun at all, because of that blind spot? One can only wonder.
Oh you are going to like the next Netheril video, I'll be talking about General Matick (who invented Magic Missile, Shield and Armor) as well as many other wizards, plus, you've inspired me to talk about the martial traditions of the Empire, they were pretty adept warriors even before they started producing enchanted arms and armor, and teaching warriors their cantras (early version of cantrips).
@@AJPickett
Ah, I see I was indeed incorrect regarding Magic Missile and Shield. Well, that's what I get for working from memory.
A cursory search on Matick is finding serious parallels between Matick and Leonidas- particularly regarding Thermopylae. I'll not look much further into it myself, but consider me thoroughly interested in the topic and excited for the impending history lesson.
Actually, now that I've made that connection, the Netherese seem to be very heavily influenced by the Greeks in general.
I'm certainly very interested in the martial traditions of the empire as well. I know you referenced the soldiers multiple times, and it seems obvious that such a nation would have need of them, but they also seem very far removed from the magocracy above them- or rather, the magocracy seems removed from the martials below them.
I'm really quite curious to see whether Matick was the sort of outlier I suspect in that regard, or more indicative of the Nethrese perspective as a whole.
@@drakeford4860 You are right on target, yes there are very clear parallels between the Greek city-states and the early civilization of Netheril, the strong martial tradition of militias clashed a lot with the rise of the mage lords and the loss of democracy. And where there is conflict, there is STORY! PLOT! ADVENTURE!
I think that the answer to that is that The Netherese Arcanists didn't employ magic on an interpersonal combat level but instead as weapons of mass destruction.
They don't hit you with a lightening bolt. They summon a thunderstorm to destroy your village and blow down your castle. Then they send in the troops to clean up.
Shock and Awe tactics. Interpersonal fighting was down with magic weapons and armour if neeeded.
I was always curious about the ancient races and empires that focused on inventing new spells. None of them really had areas/caverns/planes to research and test spells/magics/items. They fact that you could tear mountains from the ground, meteors from the sky, clouds of death, and so on would make you realize that magic is absurdly dangerous. A single mess up could lead to devastating consequences (like a meteor hitting a city), so you may want to keep your magic away from your population centers and where you store all your magic.
Netheril used a huge mining complex and the quasi elemental and para-elemental planes
@@AJPickett I do know that, I did watch your first video and that is what raised the question. They had massive underground caverns, spelljammers, and planar travel but yet they did very dangerous magic right there in their civilization.
@@roberthill5805 yes, thanks to the archwizards access to constant power and their custom built facilities within their enclaves it was common for them to not want to leave them unless they had to.
@@AJPickett Yeah, and this is one of those things of me trying to insert logic and reasoning on something that is clearly a narrative choice to show their arrogance. But this is like when the US started to find out just how devastating Nukes were so they started testing them in the middle of a desert or on some island. There is the assumption that once someone accidentally takes out their own city with a meteor that the arch mages would say, "we may want to start instituting safety regulations. "
So, in order to cast that 10th level spell, would a simulacrum turned real by a wish be a suitable second caster?
Yes.
AJ if you could can you do some history of Imaskar at some point, thank you Sir.
I second this suggestion.
Sure
So, Cassis is clearly either Dr. Strange or Benedict Cumberbatch is actually a wizard.
Karsus was more like Tony Stark, his intentions were good, he was a genius, a master of shadow magic, but, ultimately his arrogance and a particularly poor choice in picking Mystra to steal power from, was his, and his civilization's downfall.
@@AJPickett Excellent comparison. I think I had been meaning his physical appearance when I saw his image, but on the deeper description of his actions, Stark does seem the more apt comparison. Your videos have upped my comprehension well beyond my years of playing. They have had the unintended consequence of forever DM status, but it's an incredible library of information.
hay so i was wondering if there is a nice list out there for verbal, somatic, and material components for spells. like i know that for burning hands it specifically states that you pout both thumbs touching with the fingers of both hands splayed out. and then for identify you crush up a peal into some wine and stir it with an owl feather before you drink it but as cool as these little details are i was wondering if there was a more comprehensive book or list describing these processes?
I'm going to suggest that my friend RedNZblue make that video for you.
Awesome Vid as always AJ, Thanks for unloading.
With the specifics of the capabilities of spells 10th level and higher, I was wondering if you could do a video on what the limits of the power of a 9th level wish spell would actually be?
The limits are set into the spell itself. It allows the caster to reach beyond 9th level but at the cost of drawing Mystra’s ire, and losing the ability to shape the spell ever again.
Here because of Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frost Maiden. Thanks for the amazing content.
Amazing how strong these wizards are. Imagine what Thay could be if they had some of these wizards.
Anglin would make a cool quest to run. A Netheril Archanist popping back into his native realm only to find his empire has longed since been destroyed. Would make a good plot hook for some plane jumping adventures.
My players wanted to plunder a netherese city so i made one that plunged into the sea of fallin stars (they where pirates) but besides goloms and sea monsters i didn't know what to throw at them but your video opened the possibity of a gate to the plane of water so thanks that give quite a bit of veriaty
That would make an excellent subject for a video... what DO you find in the ruins of a Netherese city?
@@AJPickett

Amazing job A.J love these video and all the work you put into them!
the Ilithids come from a massive empire.
the Netherese were feared as much as Ilithids, for their biologic experiments.
could the 1st Ilithids actually be Netherese who got lost in time & space?
That could make an interesting twist!
Oh that would be interesting, and explain why the aboleth don't remember the illithid empire.
Well, part of why they can't remember the illithid empire is that it hasn't been founded yet.
My theory is that Illithid are decendents of Abolyths, who came to our time from the distant future.
@@agsilverradio2225 I like that too
Given that pretty much every useful spell was created by an arc mage at the height of the nether Empire, what magic was available for them to use to create the empire? I would think that there would have had to have been a lot of magical discoveries first
Oh no, there were tons of spells, not to mention basic powers such as telekinesis, primal elemental invocation, Jotun Runes, Elven high magic and so on.
In, before Glory!
My primary takeaway -
Damn, the Netherese were *pricks.*
Extra deep lore, AJ. Awesome as always. Now if you'll excuse me, I haven't visited the docks of Khurast in a very long time.
I would love to play a PC in this era!
So many campaign ideas.....

Makes me think of a certain red wizard I read about decades ago. He had hourglass eyes that seemed to give him otherwordly vision.
That would be Raistlin from Dragonlance
The fact candlemas reverses the water to dust spell in hell just goes to show even his level of mage in netherile was the equal of nearly every arch mage of the modern settings

Wil you cover Halruaa and the other legacies of the Netherese?
Yes, absolutely.
Was Imaskar a "human" Empire? Were they considered the first? Thanks for the high geekery AJ!
Imaskar was human, they were not the first human empire though, there was even a civilization ruled by psychics, long ago.
It isn't the first Human empire but it did exist 3000 years before Netheril.
Man. I thought I understood magic.... this place is absolutely crazy though. No wonder the in game rules stop at 9th level spells. Myself we would rather serve the gods than join them.

Oh also can we have a video on the sha'ir of al-qadim?

"Death Lich" just seems a bit redundant to me...
They have the power to summon Dark Shadows and Fang Dragons...
Which is only slightly overkill lol
You mean as opposed to the often undeservedly maligned "life lich"?
Maybe because he was a lich and he caused a lot of death? I dunno, just guessing here XD

What makes shardalans (sp?) so impressive if spell scrolls exist? Or, had spell scrolls not been invented yet?
Shardalans could be activated by anyone. A barbarian could activate a haste spell, a rogue invisibility or mage armor, etc. A farmer could activate a mending spell, a merchant detect magic, etc. Very useful indeed
forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Chardalyn
Delayed Blast Fireball was invented before Fireball?
Consider the rules of the setting:
- Arcane Age uses a modified 2nd edition AD&D ruleset.
- Arcanists get d4 Hp per level up to level 10, which is modified by constitution (max +2 per level). After level 10 they only gain +1 hp every additional level.
- Noanar - a level 21 arcanist, who invented Fireball - only had 55 HP (his stats from the arcane age book - Str 16; Dex 15; Con 16; Int 19; Wis 12; Cha 10).
- Finally Mystra's restrictions on magic were not yet in effect, which means spells improve with level indefinitely. Noanar (level 21 arcanist) casting Fireball or Delayed Fireball would deal 21d6 damage (d6 * level).
Remember, as an arcanist you will not accept healing magic from priests. When developing spells that can kill you or hurt you real bad you will be extra careful.
With this in mind creating an explosion spell with a timer attached makes perfect sense to me.
I might dumb, but where is part one?
