I thought something sounded a bit off....
I KNOW this song, note for note, inflection for inflection, after decades of listening to it, and learning it for bands I played in.
The intro was slightly different, and there was a few extra sax riffs that weren't there originally. It sounds like the original vocal track, so Im guessing someone did a remix?

The singer and pianist is Stevie Winwood. He co-wrote the songs on this 1971 album. Winwood got his start back in 1963, at the age of 14. He was recruited to sing and play the organ for the popular Spencer Davis Group, another British band of my generation worth checking out.

Jim Capaldi was the drummer for Traffic. Here, he explains the title of this song...
The title refers to an inscription written by diminutive American actor Michael J. Pollard in Jim Capaldi's notebook while they were both in Morocco. Capaldi and Pollard were planning to work on a movie that was never filmed. Capaldi said:
"Pollard and I would sit around writing lyrics all day, talking about Bob Dylan and The Band, thinking up ridiculous plots for the movie. Before I left Morocco, Pollard wrote in my book 'The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys'. For me, it summed him up. He had this tremendous rebel attitude. He walked around in his cowboy boots, his leather jacket. At the time he was a heavy little dude. It seemed to sum up all the people of that generation who were just rebels. The 'Low Spark', for me, was the spirit, high-spirited. You know, standing on a street corner. The low rider. The 'Low Spark' meaning that strong undercurrent at the street level."
At 11 minutes and 44 seconds, it is the longest track on the album. The song (and the album) received wide praise, both in print and on broadcasts. It begins with a gradual fade-in and ends with a slow fade-out. The signature two-chord piano vamp enters after the fade-in, cued by the dry rattle of a vibraslap. Verses are sparsely arranged with a slow deliberate pace in D minor, contrasting with double-time densely-layered pop choruses modulating to D major. The tune fades out with a dissonant, reverberating final chord sustained over the vamp.
Capaldi had originally written only two verses of lyrics. He quickly wrote the third verse while Winwood was recording the song's vocal and slipped it in front of him in time for him to sing it.
This song is about the recording industry ripping off the artists.
This band had their own groove. Their jams are legendary. The genius of Steve Winwood, the excellent musicianship of Chris Wood, and Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason and others made this an exciting band because you never knew what they were going to pull out of their hats next.

It seems likely that there are indeed drug references in this song, which I wouldn't have picked up on had it not been for reading comments under videos like this. However, I am convinced that the chorus *is* about the band getting ripped off by their record company. Everything fits, from the reference to "the man in the suit" buying a new car from "the profit he made on your dreams", to the line about percentages.

When this came out, our pool parties were at someone's parents' house who had a pool with speakers in the backyard trees. Very chill, sipping a good drink, smoking some pot into the night listening to this album, among others.
I'm in Vegas now, pool parties are non stop, loud, repetitive DJ parties.
    People shouting to talk.
We got the job done at our pool parties, and relaxed afterwards.

It could be metaphorically about drugs, but growing up, I always leaned more towards it's a cynical take on someone with simple dreams and aspirations, but they are getting taken advantage of by somebody in a position to take advantage of them. Partly a warning to wake up but also just kind of a rumination on how it all works.
Which of course could just as easily apply in that sense to a drug user and a drug pusher. 😊

Putting the Hammond organ thru a fuzz box was a thing for just a couple years. Jan Hammer also made waves putting his minimoog lead lines thru distorion. Blues rock was huge back in this era. Winwood and Traffic sort of invented a mellow version of blues rock/soul. It's also jazzy.

Yes, as others mentioned - the live version of this song in 1982 is not to be missed. It is rather different than the studio version, and what a performance! That live version cemented Billy Joel is one of the great performers.

    • @janfitzgerald3615
      @janfitzgerald3615 8 днів тому +1

Actually Billy Joel never performed with Traffic, it was Steve Winwood. “No, Billy Joel did not perform "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys", but the band Traffic did perform the song at Woodstock 94 in 1994.
Steve Winwood led Traffic to success with the albums The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, John Barleycorn Must Die, and Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory in the 1970s. Traffic broke up in 1975 when the band members became interested in solo projects and new creative partnerships.”

Jim Capaldi co-wrote this. He said the low spark is the undercurrent of revolution at the street level. High heeled boy refers to an activist friend of his, who was short and wore thick-heeled boots. Peace.

This album used to travel with me in the early 70's. I think I've been through three copies on different media. Many reactors think this song is too long. But it is not, it is perfect. This version you are playing is not the original studio version. Is this a live version? It almost sounds like it has been remastered strangely as some of the mixing is different. And you are correct, I am hearing some distortion that shouldn't be there. If you put this on your playlist, please seek out the original version. The one on Spot**fy is good, so you can get it from there. Love your reaction!

This ain't the actual original version of the album, must be some alternate version from a later rerelease.
