I started touring at 73. I had road biking and bike maintenance skills. I was lucky to find a touring companion. We go as fast and as far as she wants. We love to camp because it’s affordable and it makes the tour a rich 24 hour experience. Our biggest challenge is finding campsites the right distance apart. Some days are too long and others are too short. It would be easier if we could camp anywhere, but that isn’t allowed in most of the US. Arranging suitable tours takes a lot of planning, and campsite reservations lock us into a schedule. If the weather is bad, we have to get to the next campsite anyway. I would strongly advise tuning and testing your equipment before starting a tour. Know what spare parts and tools to take and know how to use them.

At 76, I have a challenge going very far or fast these days so I enjoy breaks and photographing the scenery. Going solo at my age is almost a necessity to go as I feel. So with that I do a lot less miles.

I'd love to be on the road again, the ultimate freedom!! But what is holding me back are my commitments back home. My job, taking care of my family, and even my pets! I simply can not leave for a longer period of time. Thank God I did a lot of bike-traveling in my younger years back in the eighties and nineties. All over Europe and Asia, especially Indonesia. Loved cycling the remote islands. I would advise anyone to do this when you are still young.

Okay, finally made it to the end, and you missed two important factors that determine possible daily distance:
    1. Sleep quality. If you are not used to touring, camping and/or have gear issues (like my cheap and leaky tent) then you may have trouble getting enough sleep to recover from a full day's exertion and you will ride slower and not as far the next day.
    2. Surface conditions. For trails, bikepacking, or any tours with off-road or gravel sections, the state of the surface can slow you down or speed you up. The hardest 12 miles I have ever ridden took me over four hours, on a trail I ride frequently at a more normal speed, and I didn't have headwinds, hills or rain to contend with -- the prior week had seen a lot of rain, and it had not warmed up enough to dry things out, so I slogged through deep mud until I could get to a paved road.

  • @gjw45

Very good honest advice in this video. I've have been riding for a few years, and mainly do rail trails in Australia. My no1 tip is not worry about what anybody else can do, just do your own thing at your own pace. So many cyclist like to brag about what they can do and tell you what you should be able to do. It's not a race, enjoy the ride and listen to your body.

    • @edzeppelin933

@@edzeppelin933 - Great question, and I highly recommend that you give them ago.
I haven't done them all, it's been hard during the lockdowns to get out.
As for the best, it all depends what you like.
I normally do them with my wife, and we really enjoyed the Lilydale to Warburton. It's about 80km return. It has lot's of bush riding and even has cafes on the trail.
We left Lilydale around 11am (late due to rd works) but still had time to have lunch in Warburton and made it back to the cars with lots of daylight left. We spent a lot of time looking around......loved it.
If you prefer less distance and like scenery, then nothing beats the Timboon to Camperdown trail. I wouldn't bother going all the way to Camperdown though, it's a boring ride, just start of at Timboon near the ice cream shop, and ride until you have gone past all of the trestle bridges. It's amazing, it's like being in a rain forest with these old trestle bridles hidden in amongst it all. You actually ride in the middle of the semi buried rail way lines in some sections.
Lot's of wooden bridges and creeks etc.
When that section finishes, and it turns into a boring straight bush road, I would turn around and go back to Timboon for lunch and and the best Ice Cream in Victoria.
I also enjoy the Geelong to Queenscliff trail. it's about 50% bike path, and 50% dirt.
I've also done the Murray to mountains rail trail with a few friends over 2 nights. It was one of the best weekends I've ever had, but it was more about spending time with friends than the rail trail itself.
I've also done the Ballarat to Skipton Rail Trail by myself. It was too far for my wife for a single day ride. I ended up doing about 120km. I enjoyed it, because I like the challenge, but I would pick the other 3 first.

Just got back from my first week+ trip (8 days)
Train pretty frequently with a fully loaded bike, do weekend trips pretty often in the summer/fall. This was my experience.
    Day 1 220km
    Day 2 rest
    Day 3 115km
Day 4 120km (half way point, heading home)
    Day 5 95km
    Day 6 194km
    Day 7 food poisoning
Day 8 still sick, got picked up
The main things I learned were:
    1. Hygiene - can’t stress this enough. Walking around in clothes that honk to the high heavens is very demoralizing. I only brought one street outfit, two bibs and three jerseys. Street clothes after day two were unbearable. Plus packing everything into one dry bag was a bad idea. Need to find a solution to have fresh, clean changes of clothes while still packing light. Also showering every single day. Sometimes it’s not available so you have to find a beach or anything you can to wash up.
    2. Go with someone. Solo may be appealing for the personal freedom but it gets lonely after a few days/expensive. Also it is much safer.
    3. Don’t overkill. I had a deadline to be home by and pushed myself too hard. By the end of day six I felt like death lol. Need to leave more rest days and shorter lengths. To many hours on the bike, not enough spent relaxing and enjoying new places. Should feel more like a holiday and less like work.
    4. Don’t over pack. I brought seven days worth of food with me. Totally unnecessary and way too much weight. Takes experience I guess to learn what and what not to bring.
    5. Things don’t go as planned. Lost my bike lock on day 3, which made going places limited to keeping bike in eyesight. Had a raccoon in the middle of the night at camp rip through my frame bag zippers and rummage through everything inside. Luckily I had no food stored in there, but bag was destroyed. Just prepare for it to all go to shit, which it literally did for me. I think I wore my body down too hard and ended up getting food poisoning along with a high fever, which left me with no choice but to cut my trip short. It sucks when your close to finishing but again, put safety first and don’t push too hard.
All and all a great learning experience, had lots of fun and finally got to try lots of great new gear that worked really well. Looking forward to the next journey.

Another thing I’d add for warming up to longer trips is don’t be dumb forge to bring food if there aren’t stores around.
I learned the hard way what bonking was 30 miles from home and suffered terribly the last hour. I remember laying on my kitchen floor for 40 minutes in silent pain lol.
    Bring those snacks yo.

I am planning a trip from where I live in N Idaho to Glacier National Park, over Going to the Sun Rd and across the Great divide for next summer. About 300 miles, most of which is on the Northern Tier Rout. I ride a recumbent trike do to balance issues with the MS and so the width on narrow roads is also a concerned.

Re: what's holding you back from going on a cycling tour. Currently it's the husband's work schedule.
No, back up, currently, I'm still gathering gear, so that's a practical hold up. But in a coupla few weeks when I have all that the thing holding us back is my husband's schedule.
He literally works at least 75 hours a week, often more. It's brutal. That will last about another four years then things will ease considerably. Until then we'll be able to shoehorn in little overnight trips, but that's about it.
A secondary consideration is our son who has zero interest in cycling with us, and we're uncomfortable leaving him alone for any length of time. In a couple of years he'll be heading off to college.
Looking on the bright side, this means we have a good few years to go on little overnighters and really hone what works for us before we go on longer trips. Just need to hope our bodies don't fail us while we're waiting for life to get a little less insane. =D

Sounds like you're dealing with a lot but great that you're envisioning future adventures! Some periods in life are all about working and that's ok (and necessary eh!). But 75 hours of work never sounds fun oof. But heck we've been there too (when darin was in medical school and I was working 3 jobs 🤪). I think just going on weekend rides (you can even pack a picnic lunch and a blanket so it's like a mini-tour!) or perhaps a local overnighter at some point (you could try going solo or with a friend perhaps??), would be a great start.

    Hi there...nice tips and useful!
My personal tip would also be to ride only half the average planned distance for the first two days if you are planning a tour which lasts 10 days or more. It just kind of eases you into the next days without putting your body into shock therapy. Especially helpful if you haven't done a lot of training beforehand.
Nowadays I plan out a rough idea of my tour on Komoot, that way I have a few legs of the tour roughly planned out and have done some research on alternate routes or options if there is anything in the way of my first choice route. Also if the plan is to wildcamp, then I tend not to look at the distance but rather the time spent on the bike. I try to limit my riding time to about 7 or 8 hours with some regular stops to eat and rest along the way. So really it is just about 6 or maybe 7 hours of riding time. When I am close to that limit then I start to scout out for suitable places to camp. It also helps having the summer sun burning well into the AM and never properly setting before dawn so there is plenty of light to be had to set up camp.
One thing about wind and this could especially be just local to my country of Iceland. We usually say that "it is not you who decides if you ride today, it is the wind!" Had an 80km day planned out, first 50 I had a very faint tailwind up over a mountain pass of about 550m climb. The next 20km I rode down the pass and into a fjord. Had a very faint headwind but still made good progress. The final 10km I rode out of the fjord and into what seemed all the headwind in the world colluding against me. It took me a longer time to ride the final 10km then the first 50km which consisted of a steady climb. I was physically and emotionally drained after that day.
That is also one thing which maybe could have been a tip. When you reach a point where you are exhausted and on the verge of crying because you are just so tired. And one small hill sets you off into a tirade of "why the hell am I doing this to myself" and "Who the hell thought this was a bright idea" and so on...you should have taken a break about 2 or 3 hours ago and truly rested up.... ;)

For us, Day 3 was always the day we felt most tired, when our bodies realised we were doing this every day. It became a bit of a mantra. So we always tried to schedule a shorter day for Day 3. Your equivalent may be a different day. Also, for your first few tours, build in a bit of contingency. it can be quite stressful if you've had a mechanical or other issue and are then chasing a deadline.

Right now I just bike ride for exercise and I try to bike at least five times a week for about 3 or 4 miles. I would be happy to go just on a 20 mile trip. Very new to bicycle touring. Loving your videos. Very inspiring! Almost have all my gear put together and will do an over night trip to a camp ground only 12km away to start 😉. After that, I will cycle to one further away once I have my gear figured out and then a multi day trip. I have already tried cycling with a loaded bike and felt pretty good 😊. The only issue I have been having is on my longer rides (over 30km) my left foot starts to go numb. I have platform pedals and sneakers. I think I will try a shoe with a wider toe box. Have you or Darin experienced this?

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  3 роки тому +1

I also get the numb foot problem when I wear snug shoes. Definitely go for something with a wide toe box. Solves it for me most of the time! Also, take a look at where your feet are on the pedals and try to get the ball of your foot in line with the axle of the pedal. Or you're already doing that experiment and try and see if another position stops the numbness. Also make sure your foot isn't at a funky angle when pedaling (i definitely do this sometimes with one foot and not the other and Darin's had to point it out!). Another key is making sure your weight is more evenly distributed in your hands, feet and butt. Sometimes we end up putting too much weight on (kind of pushing into) our feet. It could also have to do with improper fit so having a proper bike fit (if the other changes don't fix it) might be in order. Hope this helps!
      Enjoy your overnighter! 🤘

I have riden around 250km/day (with moderate around 2 or 3k elevation) for 2 weeks while bikepacking on light gravel or road with a tarp and still do a few cafe stops and talk with people. It's around 11h on the saddle for me. I could probably go over 300 if I went with a performance mindset (rolling a bit faster, less pauses) but that's not really what I want.
Still I usually prefer something like 150-180km while bikepacking and around 100-120 km when touring with more gear for longer periods. Having time to chill, enjoy long luches, sightsee ... but then it varies wildly one day to the next.
I'm also a fan of long pauses in the late afternoon and riding in the night, really love the feeling and with good lights, I find night safer than dusk if there is some traffic.
And it depends if I'm alone obviously.

This year I did three tours - 3, 4 and then 20 days. Got a fairly good feel for what worked (and didn’t). Currently planning a cross country trip. I have lodging figured out for each night and backups in between in case I fall short or want to go over. Mix of Warmshowers, then camping or motels/hostels if needed. Not excited about doing wild camping however. How far in advance should I firm up the lodging? A day or two? A week? A couple of places (hostels) I’ve spoken with have indicated as much as a month! I hate to get locked in because stuff happens. I’m documenting cancellation policies!
Perhaps a video on scheduling lodging would be very helpful. Questions like - when to confirm arrival dates. When to commit with reservations. Etc. Or perhaps I am overthinking this and should just go and let things sort themselves out?

Thanks for sharing. It’s very helpful. I’m a novice with cycle touring and am learning from your videos. The Border is still closed for the moment in Malaysia, even the state borders and its good suggestion to start with something small and build up from there. I should just do that...
Oh Yes, I think my biggest fear is really myself because I realize that the physical, mental and emotional state of being tends to make a big difference in how the day goes (something I learned from long distance hiking/walking). I typically do solo therefore it takes a lot more to self motivate navigating through all the pains and unknowns and some days can be sooo hard while some days just flies through. Eating, drinking and resting enough seems to play a key role here. I’m guessing the same is true with cycle touring?? Can’t imagine trying to make 50 miles a day with butterflies in the belly...😂😂

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  3 роки тому +1

Starting local is definitely the best way to start! Especially because if something doesn't go to plan you'll be close to home with a support network nearby. Go for it!
Overcoming our own fears and self-doubt (my hand also raised!) is definitely the biggest hurdle. It sounds like your long distance hiking experience has already given you lots of wisdom in how to prep. Cycling requires A LOT of calories so be prepped for that (ie LOTS OF SNACKS haha). Start with 20 miles. You'd be surprised how quickly the butterflies will dissipate once you get rolling 😀

fear of mechanicals is my biggest thing - while I've learned lots and feel comfortable with a bigger range of issues, I have two bike options and both are old and decrepit - a road bike from the 70s and a mountain bike/hybrid from the 90s. Hey! Love your channel! Just taking up touring at 62..lol my question is how to adjust with a freind? Do you guys maintain your individual speeds or is one waiting while the other is struggling ?
I have a Freind that would like to come along but she says she's really slow...I mean I don't think 2 people have to be constantly together but if it's always the same speed difference wouldn't that just put extra stress on the whole trip dynamic?
I guess maybe set short term goals??? But even then, if I've had time to eat my lunch and am ready to leave when she arrives at the lunch place...that kind of wouldn't be cool...???😊

    • @radbikeadventure
      @radbikeadventure  Рік тому +1

Hey! Good question! I think you'd have to adjust to the slower rider. At least I think that's what I'd do. And then have times where you say, hey i'd like to ride a litter faster, how bout i meet you at camp or for lunch or at the top of the hill etc. (of course make sure this person is ok with that idea ahead of time!). Darin and I had very matched riding speeds so it was never an issue for us. If either of us was a little ahead/behind (good to have space sometimes especially on such a long tour!!) it wouldn't take long to meet back up. And phones make it so easy to get in touch should you find yourself farther than yodeling distance hehe ✌And thanks for being here!

It's easy to overestimate one's average riding speed. People usually reason: "As I generally manage to sustain ca. 25km/h for 5-6 minutes, my average speed must be a tiny read below that".
Wrong. Your average speed may peak at a little under 25km/h for a few minutes, but slowing down, starting to accelerate, muscle and cardio fatigue, the environmental and road conditions, climbs (even a barely perceivable 0.5% slope), the traffic, road junction stops, both bike and rider aerodynamic drag, tyre rolling resistance, etc. all affect your average riding speed considerably. Most people struggle to sustain an average speed of over 15km/h over a half a day long ride.
My cycling speeds area usually ca. 25-30km/h on the flats (sometimes, especially if I exert more effort, more and sometimes less), but My average speed for distances over 5-10km is still only ca. 22km. After a while, say, 50km, fatigue kicks in, and, combined with all the other factors, slows the average riding speed to 20km an hour and lower, if I ride long enough. Very, very few people can sustain average riding speeds of over 20km an hour over an 8-10 hour ride. Most barely brush against 14-15km/h. And that's not counting pauses.
