Scotty Kilmer Very wise words on this upload Scotty. My son wanted a Alfa romeo for his first car. He liked the look of them. I eventually talked him into a 2003 Suzuki swift 😂 He HATED it at first but that little car went on trouble free for 3 years before he got another car. Japanese is usually the way to go for reliability. Used to love VW but modern V dubs just like modern BMWs are garbage. Great advice my man. ☺ 🖒 Love ur vids here in the UK
I'm 16 and just got a 1991 Toyota corolla and it only had 117000 miles for $300 and used your videos to put on a water and a new alternator on it. Thank you Scotty
Sandro Silva Good job! If you want to become a millionaire early. Invest as if you had a car payment, say $300 a month. If you do that for the next 15 years you’ll become a multimillionaire. Keep at it kid! Never buy/finance a new car. Always pay cash and invest.
Thing is, there is this two edge sword....if a mechanic loves his Toyota, do we need to be a mechanic to want to own one? I mean, It's like seeing a mechanic from a Ford dealership driving a Chevy truck back and forth to work. ???? I know a guy who owns a Ford truck and works as a mechanic at a Chevy dealership. ???
Toyotas often end up over priced for what you get too just due to their presumed reputation for reliability. There are plenty of superior options to the Camry you could get for a cheaper price so that's another thing people should consider.
I wish I had listened to him. Almost a year ago I dumped my savings into an American SUV with high mileage vs getting a Toyota car. It was a hard decision because I wasn't sure what I was going to be using the vehicle for (you can't haul things in a Corolla). But now I've come to realize I'm not going to be hauling things and my once great deal has cost me in repairs what I paid for the thing to begin with. Now I can't muster enough savings to get something better. And this is repairs ON TOP of repairs I have done myself (some thanks to Scotty) that saved me thousands to begin with. Had I bought a decent Corolla I'd have been able to get on with my life and use my money to much more productive (and enjoyable) things. Part of the reason is I grew up in a family that loved Toyotas (esp corollas) and was sick of them. But now I know why they liked them, they weren't stupid, and I'll never let emotions affect my car buying decisions again.
reints74 gotta be honest, that's fine for a lot of kids and maybe even you as a kid but I would refuse to drive those as mine. I want a more sporty car like a manual Subaru Impreza or something, sure those are nice but me as a kid would hate every single one of those
Nonsense got a 1 owner Accord from a family member clean title never wrecked needed almost $3000 of repairs in 1st year said to hell with it bought a BMW 540i had it for a year and a half all I’ve had to do is change oil
reints74 I would also recommend a Saturn S series if you can find one that has a reasonable amount of miles on it. That’s the only GM car I would recommend.
TheTardis157 bmw has large fleet of different models, however there are some models that are very much reliable with a proper service history, these vehicles are very expensive to maintain, and this is exactly why they are not considered the best for long term ownership, but I still think they are in better economic position than Mercedes Benz, now they will definitely bankrupt your bank account, Mercedes are for millionaires.
Mcgyver B your picture is enough to make me kill myself😭😭😭😭 buddy took a picture of his bmw steering wheel and JUST haaad to get that watch in the picture too huh😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 then you write don’t buy a bmw if you’re broke..... I’m fuckin DEAD😭😭😭😭 people like you are fucking cancer hahahahahaha
Monaco C hey don’t buy a bmw if you’re broke is a true statement,🤔??? Why am I cancerous for speaking the truth, yes I drove a BMW X6M, and I owned a Lexus as well, the bmw is a premium high performance vehicle, they are very sensitive, and if the owner doesn’t have the money to do schedule maintenance 🤷🏽♂️of course the vehicle will become unreliable, and like I said before these vehicles have been neglected by many owners who don’t follow up on schedule maintenance, and it’s not cheap, I’ve been driving this bimmer for 3 years and it’s very reliable because I go above it’s maintenance requirements, I daily drive which means I fall under the sever maintenance, I change my oil every 3 months no matter the mileage, I go for maintenance check up every 6 months the average driver who drive regular v6 Honda or Toyota shouldn’t consider a high performance turbo charged vehicle unless he’s ready to pay more, it’s that simple, you have to pay to play, and the x6m is a monster in disguise, mimics an suv but will utterly destroy the average vehicle in a race 567 horses, it makes no sense to buy a high performance vehicle and then cry about reliability, because these vehicles are reliable, they are just a different animal that is very expensive to maintain, a lot of used bmw drivers cry because they buy a used and abused bimmer, if they been neglected they will behave like a lemon model this is why service history is important.
Monaco C hey apologies accepted Scotty is giving out good advice on these videos but I just think people are not making proper decisions when they are buying a vehicle, plus experience is something that we all have to buy, many people find themselves in bmw nightmare because they didn’t do their research, bmw do have some faulty models, and so does every vehicle manufacturer, but well maintained model will be reliable.
Scotty you’re so awesome for not saying stuff like “don’t by a Ford Mustang, don’t buy a Chevy Cruze” you said reasons for every car and you’re the only grown up who isn’t against getting a sports car for their first car
Me buying a car: I’m going to take care of my car so it’ll last as long as possible Also me: I paid for the whole speedometer and I’m gonna use the whole speedometer (Not original, stolen somewhere)
I learned that the hard way. Bought my first car as a sports car used and had issues and ended up selling it for less money then I got it for. Learned my lesson.
I still have my Mustang after about 4 years now eventhough it had 2 expensive problems Simply because its a classic. Year is 1965. Otherwise in excellent condition with no frame rot or body corrosion and is daily drivable.
I recently got my first car: a used Acura TL 2005 with 67k miles and I’m absolutely loving it! Just wish it had better gas mileage, but I’m not complaining! Love my vehicle ❤️
Hey Scotty, wanted to mention you have one of the best car channels on YT. Really practical advice and the editing has gotten a lot better too. Its a shame not all mechanics are as honest as you are in your videos. Cheers from Toronto Canada, all the best.
My first car was Acura tl. It’s got 200k miles and my only complaint is the clunky transmission. Pretty impressed considering the transmission hasn’t been replaced
ANY Crown Victoria. they're cheap because there were so many sold to police and taxi companies. you can get over 600,000 miles on them no problems. my 07 has 780,000 original engine and trans, and the 05 has 830, 000 with a rebuilt trans.
John Rambo no. My father used to have a Grand Marquis. He usually paid around $500 everyweek. He also went to fix it every week. My advice. Don't get it
My recommendations for a first vehicle? 1 - '92 and up Honda civic. According to people i've talked to, these are the easiest to wrench on. I read a comment somewhere that on the '92 to '95 model, a 10 inch, 12 inch, and a 14 inch wrench can take apart 90% of the car. Civics are also a lot of fun, even in their worst condition. My only honda so far was a '91 Civic DX special edition sedan, that i paid 500$ for as a winter beater. The kid i bought it off of didn't tell me the head gasket was broken, so the car overheated after the coolant bled out. It didn't live to see the end of winter, but I didn't care. It survived long enough. 2 - '88 - '98 Chevrolet C/K 1500 OR GMC Sierra 1500 Also very easy to wrench on, and if you have the 350 V8 engine, VERY EASY to get parts for in North America. Plus, these trucks are virtually indestructible. There's a reason you still see tons of these 20-30 year old trucks, some still in showroom condition. You want to get menial tasks done involving a truck, this is the truck you want. However, Consider that gas mileage and gas prices are very high so gas will eat up your budget harder than the insurance will. However the longevity of these vehicles will mean you won't be spending money on a new vehicle anytime soon. 3 - Pretty much Any Mazda B-series mini-truck. Mini-trucks are practically cheating in the automotive world. These things are capable of doing any moving job for very little gas. My brother's first vehicle was an '89 Mazda b2200 and he drove that thing for a few years. He sold it to a guy in 100 mile house, BC (where he served in the RCMP) and when he left for Vancouver Island about 7 years later...the guy who bought his truck was STILL driving it. You might point out that the Mazda B-series and the Ford Ranger are the same truck. Ford's earlier Rangers are good starters, but apparently the newer ones are meant to be disposable. Also, my mechanic discovered that around the year 2000, Ford stopped putting their trade-ins back on the lot, they began destroying them in order to keep backyard mechanics from getting parts easily, and forcing ford owners to buy new trucks. A dick move perhaps, but did ford need a bailout back in '08? 4 - Pretty much any Toyota Camry Toyota's track record might be the best of any car manufacterer. The Camry is a solid sedan with one goal - Get you around, point A to Point B. If you don't care about what you drive and you only want something that's going to get you around and almost never breaks down, Get a Camry. Or a Corolla. My auntie, who doesn't know jack about cars, drove an '05 Corolla for a long time, and then bought an '05 Camry. To her it's the perfect car. 5 - Pretty much any Jeep Cherokee You want to go 4-wheeling? Check. Want longevity? Check. Only have about 2 grand to spend? Check. Easy to fix and a large aftermarket for parts? You want the Jeep Cherokee model. these things are all over the place, and they can 4x4 pretty much anywhere. Also, there's lots of 20-30 year old ones still cruising the city streets, meaning these things can last a long time. However, since they're popular for 4-wheeling, odds are the previous owners have abused them. So make sure a good mechanic does a Pre-Purchase inspection so you don't get a cherokee that some guy drowned in a mud bog a few summers back.
Phil Mante first two cars were a 97 camry and a c1500 96, this was 3 years ago, lol the camry had over 330,000 miles on it, drove the hell out of of it and never had problems but routine maintenance i did myself
I bought a hybrid car as my first car because I need it to travel really far for college. It has been incredibly fuel efficient and so far it has never shown any kind of problem, so I can say that it was totally worth it!
Bought a Mazda RX-8 for my first car. Has 87000km on it now, I've owned it for a year. No regrets. Upgrading the ignition system and pre-mixing for the longest engine life. All cars can be reliable if you treat them right.
Greetings from Atlanta Georgia! I was born in Houston Texas myself so I find it funny how I end up watching your videos! You remind me so damn much of my father and I love it! Amazing stuff Scotty
My first car is a Mercedes. Bad idea? Could have been, but i paid very little for it, I'm doing dirty fixes as I go, and so far, it's been a very cheap car to own. It will be ready for the junk yard when I am done with it, but now I ride comfortably for cheap money. Win!
German cars are not as bad to own if you fix it yourself. Online parts are fairly inexpensive. The dealerships are terrible though. I personally would not own another one but i did get over 200,000 miles from my Jetta TDI with the original clutch.
I disagree with you guys Mercedes-Benz are nothing but pieces of crap I rather get a Lincoln Town Car and a Mustang and a Ranger truck and a Toyota RAV4
Bought a 2002 Ford Taurus a few years ago for $700 with only 74,000 miles on it in excellent condition. Got it so cheap cause the owner thought the heater core needed replaced which the ford dealership was going to change $1000. Took it to a private mechanic who flashed heater core $100 fixing the no heat issue.
Greetings from Sydney Australia, love your videos Scotty! As a new driver my 2001 WH Holden Statesman is perfect for me, basically a long wheelbase Commodore. love the 3.8 Buick V6 in it. Easy and cheap to maintain as well.
Agreed, that's why I love them, Have a friend with a VX commodore lumina wagon with the same engine, has 500,000 Km's and basic maintenance is all he did to it, still running pretty well.
The rest of the car isn't much to write home about but the 3800 V6 engine and 4L60E transmission are among the best ever made not just from a reliability point of view but also performance. Might want to look up the Buick GNX for a bit of a history lesson.
Heh heh. We have a younger guy at work that bought a used Jaguar because he thought it was “pimpin’”. Now it’s been sitting at the transmission shop for over four months because he can’t afford to get it fixed and still feed his family. People are poor because they make uninformed and bad financial decisions.
Not really, people are typically poor because they didn't focus enough on earning more money. Trust me on this, buying a Jag and needing say $5K in repairs, well someone who has nothing to their name but a Jag, versus someone who has a lesser car but only that $5K to their name, both are far below poverty level if that's ALL they have and can afford nothing more.
J&A Castellanos People are poor because they buy things they can't afford. I've seen countless people in debt driving brand new cars, making calls with the new IPhone. And they buy new models every, single, year. That is a stupid amount of money for very little benefits.
derrik tie Each manufacturer has their fair share of good cars and crappy cars. Although in my honest opinion I think the 1999 and up rangers, crown vics, and mustangs are hands down some of the most reliable cars out there.
with rusted out bodies tho. sheet metal was crap after 1990 or so Lets not even talk about rusted out Dodge and or Chrysler products 1986 Ford E350 Van no rust on it -------------- Lic Driver Circa 1968
If SCOTTY had composed the song IMAGINE before John Lennon did, it would have sounded something like this: “Imagine there’s no Volkswagen... It’s easy if you try No S-Class besides us Above us no Skyactive... Ima-gine ALL TO-YO-TAS Living life in peace... Yoo-hoo - oo- hoo ...”
When all my buddies were buying their first cars, I told them not to buy Volkswagens. And what did they do... Buy Volkswagens. And now I get to listen to them complain about how broken and terrible their cars are.
MaxTheKanuck Yeah, some are the true definition of bulletproof, on the other hand some are breaking down as fast as Fiats or Alfa Romeos and my friend has a 97 Fiat Brava and it's been regular service and fuel for 3 years! Not even a hiccup! Jeez, and here you can't rely on brand reliability alone, people here find water in their fuel and often go without 4 or 5 oil changes and basically never buy air filters. And when they do service it, it's because they decided to sell it for the same price they got it. Mk4 Golfs cost the same price the last 8 years! Ridiculous! And somehow ALL of them have JUST UNDER 120k miles, nevermind the fact that it's spitting black stuff, the CE light is stuck on, and the seats are SHREDDED.
Vedad1944 Yeah, I know a guy who has a Golf TDI with just under 600,000 km. It's had an engine put in it, and it's rusted to shit, but that's still pretty good.
Buy a Crown Vic Police Intercepotor. 1)cheap to buy and insurance. 2)dependable. 3)cheap parts both to buy and find. 4) easy to fix (body on frame are the best).
In 1985, I bought for my first car a 1978 Honda Civic CVCC Hatchback. It served me well for 4 years, and then purchased new a 1989 Honda Civic SI Hatchback. I sold the 2nd car after 330,000 miles. I agree with all of Scotty's recommendations!
me too i had a 1989 vw jetta gli tho that was reliable as hell i got it used because it was older than me lol, i sold it in 2015 to help fund my school and I've had 2 2003 golfs and now i have a 2011. none have never left me stranded Knock on wood. but i under stand a lot of people don't like to work on em. electronically. and I've had a 2010 base civic fun to drive and reliable as hell i agree with scotty as well just curious to find out why he dont like volkswagen !?
You said "It's your first car, it's not the only car you will ever have". Too bad that isn't always true. I remember decades ago when I was in high school a kid who just got his full license who was a high school junior was given a birthday present of a brand new Camaro z28. His first car was a sports car. This was in southern WV, where roads are NOT straight. One of the first days of driving to school he picked up a friend to give them a ride to school. He decided to show off the car. In one of the very few areas you could maintain any real speed, he got the car over 120 mph. The problem is he didn't remember a left hand 90 degree turn until it was too late. The car skidded through the turn sideways, through the guard rail, broke in two on a tree and crashed into the river. His first car was his only car.
That’s a tragedy, but we can’t be sensitive with our words either. Dead people cant hear those words which are generally true. It’s just car buying advice
Very good advice. Back in the 80's, my first car was a '74 Gremlin ($400.) that didn't move very well, but did move enough to get me to work (sometimes). However, as long as I kept gas in it, it was a nice hangout on a hot Summer day as the A/C would freeze the interior in minutes. My second and third cars were purchased about six months after the Gremlin, and were very dependable. I got a '78 Subaru Leone ($50.00 and with good metal all around). My friends dad saw me walking across town, and stopped to ask me if I wanted it. He also took the time to show me how to inspect a car that I was interested in. He also told me that if I wanted a project car (he knew that I was interested in the next car) that I needed reliable transportation first. A week later I also picked up a '63 Chrysler 300 (non letter) Four door hardtop ($400.) that hadn't been driven in ten years. A few parts, and a lube job later, and the car was ready for years of reliable service. That car started my love of '57 through '77 Chrysler products. I learned very quickly NOT to use the Chrysler in town, unless I needed room for passengers, as it couldn't pass a gas station. But it got 23 MPG on the highway. The Subaru never got less than 26 MPG, and on the highway it got 33. Neither car ever left me stranded. Even when I killed the battery in the 300 (I was 18 and had FM radio), I was lucky enough to have one of the few automatics with a rear pump, and was able to roll the car down the hill to start it. The Subaru's engine has been transplanted in three other Subarus since, and I don't know if it still exists. The Chrysler was last seen at a car show in Wisconsin about two years ago, but looks much better than when I had it... And it didn't look bad 32 years ago.
That's great. Do you follow the maintenance guide in the owners manual to a T? Obviously you take very good care of your car. My thing is I don't drive my cars many miles yearly to follow the owners manuals suggestions fully. But I do stay on top of the maintenance. Especially the little and easily forgotten things.
thinking about saving up for a mustang for my first car. Thinking about getting one that is 1-2 years old with 10-20k miles on it. I think that should be perfect to get rid of some of that depreciation yet still have a newer car that shouldnt have any problems.... right?? idk with all the research im doing i feel like a mustang would be a fun, nice, and pretty reliable car to drive daily. sure its no toyota prius but its not like an audi 3 lol i have a friend who bought it used... no problems now but everyone i know who has had an audi has always had crazy repairs on them. my dad has a 2003 mustang and we've never had too many bad repairs on it in the past 15+ years.
4yrs later... Care to share if you bought the car you wanted or ended up getting something else? I haven't bought a first car yet and I'm curious to know more.
my God I feel your frustration. I swear man, my friends know Im a gear head and know quite a bit about cars, motorcycles etc. they ask me what they should buy. I tell them, 'okay, heres something nice, mostly stock, something that you will save thousands on in initial cost and go up in value! plus, I know how to work on it and parts are cheap! like holy fuck its a win win win win situation right!' then they almost religiously blow me off and do their own thing anyways
FY Y Bet you don't. Stop talking shite. As your first car? get a grip of reality, you'll wrap it round a post the first few months of having it. Idiot.
My first car is BMW 520d 5 series, it has about 22 000 miles, rear wheel drive, twin turbo 184hp, Gas mileage is good, here in Bavaria Germany, BMW's are very popular. I think you have right about this. You first have to do a resarch of car you like, you have to see how it looks, reputation, servise, warranty from dealership, insurance costs etc. I know many guys who buyed mercedes AMG's, BMW's M-series, Audi S and RS series, later they regreat when they become bills from dealership for regular servise like oil change, inspection, etc.. the best part ist that many of them can't pay a premium insurance, that means that insurance covers all costs in case you crash your car from fun. So at the end they have a great car, they gave every month a last euro to the car, and they don't have a fun becouse of fear of not crashing that car. So if you are low on budget insted of buying a new car rather invest your money to education, then you can earn more money and afford that your dream car.
Used cars are like women: Don't get the ones that are trashed often, high maintenance, money pits, and had a lot of previous owners. Get the ones that are reliable, dependable, and un-soiled!
Just got mine, my grandfather had an old Accord laying around because my grandma got a new car, thing only has 150K and only needs an o2 sensor, and some antifreeze (put it in) runs like a champ :D. And best of all, it was FREE.
You Will Never Know At that milage be sure to do good maintenance, change the oil with Synthetic and change the brake and power steering fluid. Good luck!
My first car was/is a 74 Volkswagen Beetle. Yea it’s had issues but it’s always back on the road in no time. Parts are heap as well and fun to work on!
If you take care of it well enough you'll probably own it long enough to want to get something newer. Unless you never get bored of that beige interior and fake wood paneling.
IamTranslation you do realize most of that was debunked, right? First off, with all the research into new battery tech, Lithium might not even be the material of choice in the near future, and for longevity, the Model S came out in 2012, and there is a Taxi company that runs Model S and X's, and one of their cars reached 300K miles and still reports battery health at 93% right?
My first car was a 1982 Honda Civic that I bought for $250. Previous owner had disassembled the engine for some reason and then proceeded to lose parts. I traded a golf cart that my uncle had given to me for a 1981 Civic that had a rusty body, but a VERY nice interior and a tight little motor. I spent Grade 11 mostly in the Auto shop putting the '82 together with parts off the '81. Had a great little car after that. I think I had maybe $500 bucks into the car (that included PAINT!) and sold the car later for $700.
If you just have to have a high performance car as a first car Id reccomend a Mustang from 1994 to 2005. I havent heard of them having any major problems, they look good and are available with V8s and a manual transmission. Mine's a classic and it works perfectly fine for what I use it for. But a mid 90s to mid 00s one would be better for those who dont know how to care for a classic car.
Crazy Ohioan Cars, Guns, and Gaming Im not gonna lie I have had some problems that would have killed it if not fixed. The tranny used to leak really bad and it wouldnt hold an alignment. But now it doesnt leak and it holds an alignment decently well but it was an expensive fix. Otherwise in good condition with some minor electrical problems that have now been fixed. Repainted, rebuilt engine, no frame rot whatsoever. And this is a first generation Mustang.
Crazy Ohioan Cars, Guns, and Gaming Yeah, just wanted something a little different. I try to not beat on it. Got a digital radio with bluetooth too but still mostly original.
Toyota and Honda are the most reliable brand of cars period! My family has nothing but Toyota and all the cars never had any major issues and we are still driving our 18 year old Toyota van that has over 200k miles.
I've had both makes and my Civic started falling apart at 70k and I had a Toyota that the head gasket blew at 130k. Sure they might be reliable, but they definitely are not prone to issues. I've had VW's last well over 300k.
I have an 04 Honda Accord. Most work I've had to do is replace the starter, and the downstream o2 sensor. Other than that, it's an amazing car. Fuel efficient, cheap insurance, surprisingly fun to drive, not to mention it has a lot of aftermarket support since it has a K24 engine.
Yep. Certainly not aware of any issues with skyactiv petrol motors, or transmissions. Here in the UK Mazda rate as one of the very best for reliability and customer satisfaction, even ahead of Toyota who sell a lot of Euro built products which aren't as good as some of their older Japanese built models.
Maybe it's because you're not a Mazda mechanic so people never consider coming to you to talk about or have their skyactiv engine repaired? Just a hunch.
My friend was looking for a car 3 years ago. I told him to buy a toyota but he ended up with a used BMW 5 series. He was half broke most of the time but he really enjoyed the ride. Fast forward to 2019, he passed away just after the new year. It was a terrible news but looking back I am happy that he at least enjoyed his 5 series for the last 3 years of his life.
That's a pretty good find. I got a 1986 f150 lariat with 45,000 miles It's mint. I've had it professionally fully inspected with no problems except the license plate lights don't work. 👍🏼
My first car is in the one in my profile a 1997 BMW m3 that I paid 6500 for with 160k miles and in the 7 years I've had it I've had no serious problems
My first car was a 1994 Nissan Sentra. My mom never changed the oil or cared for the maintenance and abused the poor thing but it was very reliable. Great first car $27 on insurance and $17- $20 to fill up the tank $27 with the gas prices high. Oh how I felt rich with that car cause it never gave me issues and saved me money. For my second car i had a 2002 Honda civic. When I got that thing it had 200,000 Miles. It was driven to Florida to California many times. Driven to Vegas los Angeles and all over the bay area sometimes that same week and it kept running even if it had been in 3 accidents before and was salvaged twice. Eventually I sold it to a friend for like $1,000 and she also drives everywhere. For my third car i got a 2011RAV4 limited and it is treated better than the other one. It was a little pricey I got it at $20,000 in 2017 but at 14,000 Miles and the previous owner was rich as in had a corporation in Malibu and owned property in Malibu rich and it came with all the upgrades you could get it was recently smogged and the registration was recently paid so I only paid $15 to the DMV. It had an upgraded backup camera and old fashion radio was ripped off and a screen was installed. The tires were brand new and they had installed an extra large JBL speaker. All my friends got a car at the same time and had problems with their car but my RAV4 has been so wonderful to me and hasn't given me any issues.
My wife and I made the mistake of buying the new 2008 Malibu. It was the first year they used the new 6 speed transmission in their cars I believe. Had to pay 2,000 to replace the transmission and a few other things at only 100,500 miles. Insane. And things continue to break and cost hundreds. Chevy really disappointed us..
Daniel Rainey And how many times did you change the transmission fluid? Zero, I bet. SMH. You should talk to some Toyota or Honda owners who had their transmissions fail at 75 or 80 K....and get laughed out of the dealership...
No, but it would be funny if it was. It stands for Sport Utility Vehicle. "Sport Utility Vehicle." SUVS are not sporty or have anyhting to do with sport.
Yep. My family once had a 2001 Ford Expedition with great leather interior and options but it only got 14 mph tops average and it leaned over a whole lot everytime you took turns in it. Definitely not the safest nor most reliable type of car I would drive.
They are silly if you're a useless person who never needs to haul covered cargo or go off road, and unstable if you are a terrible driver and speed a lot.
I am glad to say that I bought a beautiful car for my first. 2008 Lincoln town car. Everything’s running well. But the air suspension died a few days ago. That’s the only thing that has failed. Everything else is going great.
LTA PRODUCTIONS Air Suspensions are usually as much or more than a transmission to replace the part. At least in the Mercedes Ben's cars. $1400 just for one unit!
LTA PRODUCTIONS im 14 and my dad bought a lincoln towncar from my moms parents, its more "fancy" than the gmc we have now, it runs nice and the chairs are very comfortable
My first car was a 92 Honda prelude standard transmission. It didn’t have functioning a/c, gas level, or speedometer. But I learned basic car maintenance and how to drive stick shift. The girlfriend I took on dates at the time is now my wife. So many good memories with my ‘lude.
As a former tow truck driver, do not get Nissan rogues. I have never seen so many calls for mechanical failures. Also infinity g35 I think are terrible too.
Yeah I bet, but in my experience when we towed them back to our shop, alot of the infinity had specific problems, especially with the fuel, mainly the fuel injectors or the fuel pump itself. We kept comprehensive stats for geico and progressive, and for the year 2014 and 2015. Nissan rogues took the number 1 spot for mechanical tow in (non accident) and the second car was the infinity. That's just with our customers and doesn't reflect the rest of Colorado, but I highly doubt we randomly got all the Nissan rogues and infinitys by chance.
Bought a 2000 mustang back in 2013 with like 170000 miles and still running good till this day with no problems. Hope it will continue to last me until it's time to buy a new car.
FIrst car - 1991 Toyota Celica GT coupe, 235,000 km with a salvage title. Zero issues from inspection. Took a risk but simply replaced the battery and runs like new. Also is undercoated and has no rust at all. Everything works on the car, interior is mint and the exterior is near perfect as well with the original paint still on. Turned out to be an awesome buy. Only driven 1300 km so far but no burnt oil or coolant so that is good.

Scotty Kilmer what's about the oldschool bug (with the boxer engine)
if taken care of they can be really good vehicles, but they haven't been made for a long time, so parts can be hard to get
Scotty Kilmer thanks
Scotty Kilmer hello big fan but i need help im going yo buy a car today 2015 dodge dart with 42,000 miles on it for $9,100 what do you think
You've convinced me. I'm buying a car that has a mechanic in the trunk.
*Buys a '94 Celica*
lol
If Scotty ever opened a used car lot I'd fly down there to buy one from him. Honest used car salesman!?!?!
The lot would be full of Camrys and corollas...
Mr. Chiweeni and Celicas lol
Mr. Chiweeni right!!!??
It would just have toyota's
"Toyota Approved Used"
So this is where John Lennon went

Scotty always finds an excuse to mention that damn Celica 😂
celicas are great minus the oil problems
As soon as I read this I hear "ok this is my Toyota Celica" lmao
😂😂
Literallyyy!!
I'm 16 and just got a 1991 Toyota corolla and it only had 117000 miles for $300 and used your videos to put on a water and a new alternator on it. Thank you Scotty
Hey thats cool. 👍
Sandro Silva Good job! If you want to become a millionaire early. Invest as if you had a car payment, say $300 a month. If you do that for the next 15 years you’ll become a multimillionaire. Keep at it kid! Never buy/finance a new car. Always pay cash and invest.
Sandro Silva where I am that car would be £150
Well you're one wise and bright kid. I see you actually going places in life, no pun intended. :-)
yay we have the same car
I think Scotty likes Toyota’s
Thing is, there is this two edge sword....if a mechanic loves his Toyota, do we need to be a mechanic to want to own one? I mean, It's like seeing a mechanic from a Ford dealership driving a Chevy truck back and forth to work. ???? I know a guy who owns a Ford truck and works as a mechanic at a Chevy dealership. ???
That's because he's busy and doesn't need more work.
But now I know why they liked them, they weren't stupid, and I'll never let emotions affect my car buying decisions again.
alwcurlz i drive a ford truck to work at a dodge dealership
This guys electric. You can't buy that kinda energy at that age
Sean Fagan sure you can: cocaine

Corolla, Camry, Accord or Civic. The end.
reints74 gotta be honest, that's fine for a lot of kids and maybe even you as a kid but I would refuse to drive those as mine. I want a more sporty car like a manual Subaru Impreza or something, sure those are nice but me as a kid would hate every single one of those
Zombie Jesus Lord of Grass
You should try the Honda FK8.
Just get a Volvo, those things are tanks
Nonsense got a 1 owner Accord from a family member clean title never wrecked needed almost $3000 of repairs in 1st year said to hell with it bought a BMW 540i had it for a year and a half all I’ve had to do is change oil
reints74 I would also recommend a Saturn S series if you can find one that has a reasonable amount of miles on it. That’s the only GM car I would recommend.
Very good advice for a first time buyer, I’ve been there and these tips are spot on 👍🏻👍🏻

Exhausted Yep you're right bro :)
If your broke do not buy a used bmw.
Unless you can get it for cheap and are willing to throw it away when something expensive breaks.
I revved up my engine and it blew up. You’ll be hearing from my lawyer soon.

Scotty you’re so awesome for not saying stuff like “don’t by a Ford Mustang, don’t buy a Chevy Cruze” you said reasons for every car and you’re the only grown up who isn’t against getting a sports car for their first car

Thanks for the support👍
Walking down the street and Scotty pops out of the trunk...
If I was his neighbor I think that he would move away in the night because I would be pestering him for advice so much.
I learned that the hard way. Bought my first car as a sports car used and had issues and ended up selling it for less money then I got it for. Learned my lesson.
Alexander Contreras *2v mustang GTs*
Alexander Contreras same, feelsbadman :(
you're pretty much always gonna sell a car for less than you paid though
I still have my Mustang after about 4 years now eventhough it had 2 expensive problems Simply because its a classic. Year is 1965. Otherwise in excellent condition with no frame rot or body corrosion and is daily drivable.
Experience is the best teacher 👍🏾
I recently got my first car: a used Acura TL 2005 with 67k miles and I’m absolutely loving it! Just wish it had better gas mileage, but I’m not complaining! Love my vehicle ❤️
Friend: "Hey, how do you know if you've got a good mechanic?"
Me: If he spontaneously jumps out of trunks n rings a mean bell then keep him.
(likes own comment) "yeaaa that'll get it goin!"
Hey Scotty, wanted to mention you have one of the best car channels on YT.
Really practical advice and the editing has gotten a lot better too. Its a shame not all mechanics are as honest as you are in your videos. Cheers from Toronto Canada, all the best.
Almost to 1 million subscribers Scotty!
George Santos true. Same with the Lincoln Towncar, except when and if the extra toys in it fail.
Hell yes i want one of those. Not to mention all the useful accessories, and being able to skirt the law and mess with people just by driving around
John Rambo no. My father used to have a Grand Marquis. He usually paid around $500 everyweek. He also went to fix it every week. My advice. Don't get it
John Rambo You'll be spending more on gas but other than that I agree
Maybe... But not everybody wants to pay their mortgage in petrol every other week just to be able to drive to work...
I always have wondered if this guy's neighbors hate him for screaming his head off every couple of days when he makes new videos..
Jon Clarkson wtf?
Had a 2014 Mustang as my first car. It was certified pre-owned and went well!
No one

every other car guy has told me "MIATA" for my first car, Little do they know I live in the northeast
Murata isn't really a sports car. It has very little power NA. It's a sporty car with good handling.
2 - '88 - '98 Chevrolet C/K 1500 OR GMC Sierra 1500
Also very easy to wrench on, and if you have the 350 V8 engine, VERY EASY to get parts for in North America.
4 - Pretty much any Toyota Camry
Toyota's track record might be the best of any car manufacterer.
5 - Pretty much any Jeep Cherokee
You want to go 4-wheeling?
Phil Mante What a bout a NA mx5 Miata
I bought a hybrid car as my first car because I need it to travel really far for college. It has been incredibly fuel efficient and so far it has never shown any kind of problem, so I can say that it was totally worth it!
which one
Which car are you talking about
Bought a Mazda RX-8 for my first car.
This video wasn't just informational. It was...
...inspriational.
In the uk it’s unimaginable to have anything but a used hatchback as a first car
Yha tip for first car buyers always go for used cars because then if anything goes wrong which it does it will be easy to fix st any mechanic shop.
are sedans not popular in the uk? They're usually cheaper than hatches
My first car is a Mercedes. Bad idea? Could have been, but i paid very little for it, I'm doing dirty fixes as I go, and so far, it's been a very cheap car to own. It will be ready for the junk yard when I am done with it, but now I ride comfortably for cheap money. Win!
@Lukas Gröndahl oh yeah yeah
Oh yeah
German cars are not as bad to own if you fix it yourself. Online parts are fairly inexpensive. The dealerships are terrible though. I personally would not own another one but i did get over 200,000 miles from my Jetta TDI with the original clutch.
What model and year?
I disagree with you guys Mercedes-Benz are nothing but pieces of crap I rather get a Lincoln Town Car and a Mustang and a Ranger truck and a Toyota RAV4

Bought a 2002 Ford Taurus a few years ago for $700 with only 74,000 miles on it in excellent condition. Got it so cheap cause the owner thought the heater core needed replaced which the ford dealership was going to change $1000. Took it to a private mechanic who flashed heater core $100 fixing the no heat issue.
Just got a 2008 Mazda 6 with a 5 speed manual transmission and 94,000 miles as my first car!
How much did you get it for, im looking to get my first car
Gavin Gould price?
Greetings from Sydney Australia, love your videos Scotty!
As a new driver my 2001 WH Holden Statesman is perfect for me, basically a long wheelbase Commodore. love the 3.8 Buick V6 in it. Easy and cheap to maintain as well.
i have a buick with the 3800. those things last forever!
So do I, mine's a 94 VR Holden Commodore. I'm gonna drive it till it stops running (though I'm probably in for a long wait till that happens).
Agreed, that's why I love them, Have a friend with a VX commodore lumina wagon with the same engine, has 500,000 Km's and basic maintenance is all he did to it, still running pretty well.
GM junk
Stinky Cheese
Generating more sources of revenue ARE financial decisions, man.
Richard Bowles Umm if he was rich he would of bought a new one and wouldn’t be in that situation, ppl are poor because they have a shitty job.
I couldn’t agree more man!
J&A Castellanos People are poor because they buy things they can't afford. I've seen countless people in debt driving brand new cars, making calls with the new IPhone. And they buy new models every, single, year. That is a stupid amount of money for very little benefits.

2004 Ford Ranger I4 5spd. Stripped down basic model. Bought it new. Never has broken down because there isn't much on it to break.
derrik tie Each manufacturer has their fair share of good cars and crappy cars. Although in my honest opinion I think the 1999 and up rangers, crown vics, and mustangs are hands down some of the most reliable cars out there.
with rusted out bodies tho.
sheet metal was crap after 1990 or so
Lets not even talk about rusted out Dodge and or Chrysler products

Crown Vic is the perfect car for a teenager.
Big, safe, easy to drive, and bad on gas so they can’t get far 😂
Do you also do the thing where you slow down whenever you see one, just on case?
I’ve got a grand marquis which is it’s cousin. They’re good cars, and they have a bulletproof V8. They get good gas mileage for a V8
This advice is SPOT on. Well done Scotty!
This advice is for sheeps who dont even like cars and dont watch this video.
If SCOTTY had composed the song IMAGINE before John Lennon did, it would have sounded something like this:
“Imagine there’s no Volkswagen...
It’s easy if you try
No S-Class besides us
Above us no Skyactive...
Ima-gine ALL TO-YO-TAS
Living life in peace...
Yoo-hoo - oo- hoo ...”

😂😂🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍👍👍
I got a VW for my first car.
Needless to say, it was a bargain for a reason.
✡ CSGO ALFA Ye well, to each their own.
I just thought hey VW are reliable and went for it.
Left me stranded twice and garbles fuel like crazy.
My VW taught me how to work on cars and fix them. Take from that what you will.
Honda not like that anymore, my wife's 08 Accord fell apart at 110k and it was an oil hog. The pan was dry after 1k miles.
Boring. Boring. Boring.
I agree longevity and dependability of cars are not exciting topics. But for first cars, I found these traits to be very relevant.
Paralyzed or dead?
Mythical Toes both
Deep
This is why you don't get a high schooler a high performance vehicle first. They WILL show it off and a catastrophe will occur.
"All the bells and whistles"
I love this guy

First car 2003 Dodge Neon paid $4000 in 2007. Still Driving it today with 208K
@@Strange_Man19113 months later he has a mil subs I doubt he’ll answer anytime soon but what car did you end up getting ?
@@morbidzombii None. Still relying on my grandpa car.
@@Strange_Man1911after researching his channel, he did not go with the mustang but instead a ford focus
It's like I'm listening to myself trying to tell my friends not to buy stupid cars.
K
my God I feel your frustration. I swear man, my friends know Im a gear head and know quite a bit about cars, motorcycles etc. they ask me what they should buy. I tell them, 'okay, heres something nice, mostly stock, something that you will save thousands on in initial cost and go up in value! plus, I know how to work on it and parts are cheap! like holy fuck its a win win win win situation right!'
then they almost religiously blow me off and do their own thing anyways

Scotty, you're the best. Great advice and infectious energy.
That garage though....

Thanks for the support 👍

Used cars are like women: Don't get the ones that are trashed often, high maintenance, money pits, and had a lot of previous owners. Get the ones that are reliable, dependable, and un-soiled!
You left out "rode hard". But I compare the women to tires. I want Japanese and bald.
Shit bro lol that's funny
with both you stay away from the ones that look like they seen better days.
Nanogrip unless it's a rental 👍
Goes both ways
Just got mine, my grandfather had an old Accord laying around because my grandma got a new car, thing only has 150K and only needs an o2 sensor, and some antifreeze (put it in) runs like a champ :D. And best of all, it was FREE.
You Will Never Know
At that milage be sure to do good maintenance, change the oil with Synthetic and change the brake and power steering fluid. Good luck!
My first car was/is a 74 Volkswagen Beetle. Yea it’s had issues but it’s always back on the road in no time. Parts are heap as well and fun to work on!
🚗Hey Scotty, u forgot 1 more tip: as a first purchase, don't buy a car that's been Riced out!🍚

Have an 05 camry with under 100,000 miles as my first car. Might also be my last car seeing how long they last.
If you take care of it well enough you'll probably own it long enough to want to get something newer. Unless you never get bored of that beige interior and fake wood paneling.
Forced electrification will probably happen before it dies if you keep up on maintenance haha
I went really simple. 86 f150 lariat. Air cruise tilt. Manual windows and locks, no abs, a bullet proof 302 efi and c6 3 speed automatic. Love it
I didn’t knew that ozzy osbourne likes cars :p
My first car was a 1982 Honda Civic that I bought for $250. Previous owner had disassembled the engine for some reason and then proceeded to lose parts. I traded a golf cart that my uncle had given to me for a 1981 Civic that had a rusty body, but a VERY nice interior and a tight little motor. I spent Grade 11 mostly in the Auto shop putting the '82 together with parts off the '81.
Had a great little car after that. I think I had maybe $500 bucks into the car (that included PAINT!) and sold the car later for $700.
Nice! Even though you didn't get paid for your time you learned a skill and made something happen on your own.
I agree!
I've had both makes and my Civic started falling apart at 70k and I had a Toyota that the head gasket blew at 130k. Sure they might be reliable, but they definitely are not prone to issues. I've had VW's last well over 300k.
I just stumbled upon your channel and absolutely love it; been binge watching your videos for the past couple hours. Keep up the good work!
I have an 04 Honda Accord. Most work I've had to do is replace the starter, and the downstream o2 sensor.
Other than that, it's an amazing car. Fuel efficient, cheap insurance, surprisingly fun to drive, not to mention it has a lot of aftermarket support since it has a K24 engine.
used my headphones as speakers. High energy!!!
Never heard of any issues with skyactiv-G motors, thats why I bought one
emark24 Yeah I've read they're a pretty bulletproof engine
Stinky Cheese but you can do that thing called research, and of course as a car enthusiast possess general knowledge....
Whats ironic is that they completely set aside the fact of research... on a youtube channel completely aimed at people researching problems....
I have a 2007 Lexus GS300! I love it, and got a great deal (($6,000 in perfect mechanical and cosmetic shape with 130,000 miles!!))
SURENITY ! That is a steal. Nice find!
That's a pretty good find. I got a 1986 f150 lariat with 45,000 miles It's mint. I've had it professionally fully inspected with no problems except the license plate lights don't work. 👍🏼
Yeah and your Lexus xenon light bulbs 200 a piece
@@tbones52989 They are only $25 per bulb. I installed them myself....
@@forc3ofxf3ar51 Thank You!!
I brought a 2010 honda insight as my first car and its amazing
My mom had a Equinox that had just been paid off back in October 2014. Transmission went out the next month.
ALEXDaG953 sucks man. Unfortunately we are still paying on this car.
Just say no to Chevy.
Daniel Rainey And how many times did you change the transmission fluid? Zero, I bet. SMH. You should talk to some Toyota or Honda owners who had their transmissions fail at 75 or 80 K....and get laughed out of the dealership...
'Only' 100500 miles?
Isn't that a lot?!
Maybe I don't know cars but $2000 for 100k miles doesn't seem that bad.
Is it true SUV stands for Silly Unstable Vehicle?
No, but it would be funny if it was. It stands for Sport Utility Vehicle.
"Sport Utility Vehicle."
SUVS are not sporty or have anyhting to do with sport.
Casey Stoner yes
In slippery conditions they are the first vehicles to spin out. Top heavy
Yep. My family once had a 2001 Ford Expedition with great leather interior and options but it only got 14 mph tops average and it leaned over a whole lot everytime you took turns in it. Definitely not the safest nor most reliable type of car I would drive.
They are silly if you're a useless person who never needs to haul covered cargo or go off road, and unstable if you are a terrible driver and speed a lot.
this guys enthusiasm is off the charts
Thanks Scotty, great advice.
0:45-0:56 Cat just nonchalantly cleaning itself on the hood of that old Celica 😂🐱
Got a Mazda 626, bought it since 1994, still working fine, replacements are cheap.
Started with a 1998 ford explorer with 180k miles. Really taught me how to drive, now i have a 2013 ford focus with 100k miles, and i love it.
Yeah, IK. we decided to convert the car to shocks instead, only cost about 100
town cars and the rest of panther platforms are nice cars
LTA PRODUCTIONS im 14 and my dad bought a lincoln towncar from my moms parents, its more "fancy" than the gmc we have now, it runs nice and the chairs are very comfortable
Freaking annoying
In Romania you should buy a Dacia... they are owned by Renault but are Romanian made
The best first car to buy is a old Ford crown victoria. Bought mine when I was 17 and 9 year later its still running like the first day.
I don’t know this man but I love him
My first car was a 92 Honda prelude standard transmission.
Nissan rogues look like they were designed by a committee
maddkilo g35s are great cars man, best used performance cars under 10k. Literally a 4 door 350z
Oh and I remember the least towed make and model car was the Acura mdx ans rdx (non accident and accident.) something to point out.
Maddkilo which cars do you recommend since you always deal with cars do you have a facebook??
1:03 That "Ergh" though.
Honda: Civic or Accord, any year.
Toyota: Corolla or Camry, any year.
Always go with these by default.
azlan mahmud and the 2018 Camry with its oversized pistons

no nissan or Mitsubishi or Subaru or mazda?
TENNSUMITSUMA Nissan is a rebranded Renault in short terms
+Im_Sky They share some engines and platforms but not all . My friends 1.6l Pulsar is not "rebranded" Renault. Even the engine is from Nissan itself.
On the other hand Nissan Micra and Renault Clio are the same cars with different badges and design. Same platform same engine etc.
