      The reason as to why Bug Eyes is named Thorfinn because Bug Eyes was a slave and Leif thought he was Thorfinn so he bought him. Of course, Bug Eyes isnt our mc but Leif still felt bad for Bug Eyes so he raised him like his own son and adopted him fully.

    1:16:17 It's actually funny that you bring that up. Although it's never mentioned in the manga or the anime, the author Makoto Yukimura actually confirmed in some old tweets that, at this point in the story, Canute is married to an older widow and has children. Based on real history, that "older widow" would be Emma of Normandy, the widow of King Ethelred II. So he did indeed do exactly what you're suggesting.

    Episode 9 is one of the best anime episodes of anything of have ever watched. Was teary eyed throughout the whole episode. Masterpiece. Peak.
    And Canute, developing in the complete opposite way of Thorfinn. Remember Sweyn mentioning the Crown's curse in S1? Well...

Guys will there be more fights later on? Bcs im tired of all the farming I'm here to see action. When is this getting good like how Season 1 was?) I think you guys are a bit quick to dismiss the wisdom of Seizing Keitel's land, As long as they can create enough justification nobody will complain in the lower classes and the act itself weakens the landed aristocracy that would be Canute's main opposition anyway. as long as he doesn't seize things too fast and without some justification its a legitimate tactic. especially if he leverages the new money to improve the Realm and casts himself as on the side of the peasantry.

      Its literally what people mean when they say eat the rich/redistribute wealth lol. No one man should be so wealthy that his wealth could support a military. All the retainers being salty is BECAUSE they dont own anthing and they are effectivley slaves themselves while one man hoards it all. That said canute isnt stealing this wealth to make the country better, hes doing it because he wants to keep his military large because he anticipates needing it. When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.

The sad thing is that Canute is using utilitarian calculations to try and achieve his goals, its akin to nationalizing a company who's only sin is that they are profitable and rich even when the majority of its workers are well paid and well treated.

      I hate the "this political system is not this therefore it is superior" argument, it is a logical fallacy!
      What makes a nation better are factors that can be achieved regardless of the political system in place. things like a good population growth rate, a mobilized workforce, an education system capable of creating experts, great social cohesion, lower levels of mental illness, low amount of crime, etc,

    About the whole "requisition" thing. Canute doesn't want money or supplies, he wants THE FARM. He needs the actual land, so that it continues to produce goods directly for him and his army. He said it earlier "We don't have time to cultivate new lands", so they're going to take them.

    his requisition of more properties is actually a better plan, 1. since he has not much time to wait for a new land to start producing money for him(cuz that would take atleast 10-20 yrs & he needs money rn to prevent the structure from falling)
    2. he can't many many princess cuz that would bring more indirect responsibilties(family, social vise) also this plan is again of a long term
    & he need the army to rule over denmark , england so reducing size of army is out of question. as long as he doesn't seize things too fast and without some justification
    a lay man won't really care abt his kings action as long as it directly impacts him, the ppl who would care are big names , businessmen & other kings

    Knut might also kill Ketil while he is in Jelling and let Olmar inherit the farmland and manipulate him into do all the work in the farm and send all of the supplies to the crown. This is more suited with Knut's way of handling opposition so far. I don't know what will become of Thorgil in this case though. Will he continue to be Knut's personal squad or will he want to inherit the farm instead of Olmar and be a foil to Knut's plans. Lol u guys really seem to hate Thorgil. Not that I think he's a cool guy, but I don't think that the sentiment we have against the beating of children existed back then. At least for Danes. I think it just doesn't register as a terrible thing to do because no one's ever told them so.
    Regardless, one thing that Thorgil honestly strikes me as, if not just a mindless battle dude, is of a loving family older brother. He knows his brother Olmar is a pussy and an idiot. Yet he never seems to look down on him or to treat him like shit. He honestly is just friendly and acts the part of a bro. As for how he sees Ketil, it's at least slightly different because he has him on a pedestal above what he is, but I don't think it changes that he'd be a fierce protector if anyone were to harm Olmar or Ketil and the farm.
    Not that it matters a whole lot. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
    Great reaction though guys! I watched the entire 2 hrs just because you 2 are the ones I see take this show the most seriously. Love seeing you watch this show using your head unlike most other reactors. Not that their reactions are bad but yall are a cut above them

    • @BOLDcast
      @BOLDcast  Рік тому +4

      thanks so much man, glad you enjoy3ed the whole thing!
      Maybe thats a good point about thorgil. But other characters in that scene could understand the immoral nature of beating those children for just trying to survive, even if a punishment needed to be dealt, no one was jumping at the opportunity to commit violence against children other than Thorgil. Even Snake, although he said he would do it, clearly wasn't going to take pleasure in it. But Thorgil was actively seeking out the opportunity because its the sort of thing he enjoys. He genuinely thinks its a cool thing to do and I think that says a lot about his character
      but you have a point about corporal punishment being viewed differently in modern times than in the past.

    • @lucaspoon4202
      @lucaspoon4202 Рік тому +3

      @@BOLDcast I don't necessarily think he was taking joy in the fact that the subject he was beating was a kid, but that the subject he was beating had guts. As a warrior, guts is everything and I imagine that testing another strong individuals guts is fun for him. Kinda something that could be related to athletes. They like to test each other's strength and fortitude of mind because it's simply the crux of the game they play.
      It's fucked up by today's standards, but I think Thorgil was basically connecting with and acknowledging the strength of that boy wanting to protect his sister. After all, Thorgil is an older sibling as well.
      Your definitely right that the others there didn't like the idea of beating them and yeah, snake was iffy on it. I think the main difference though is Snake and the others there are not that "athlete type" mentally like Thorgil is and are more complex emotionally. Yeah, Thorgil is very simple on the emotional part. That's a fact for sure. And therefore not gonna feel as much synpathy for someone he's causing pain too if feels he's got reason to do it. But he probably does understand very well, physical pain, and just sees it as something which toughens people up.

    • @deadsec5970
      @deadsec5970 Рік тому +3

      @@BOLDcast as much of an asshole as thorgil is, I really believe there wasn't any true malice but that he truly admires the child's bravery for accepting the punishment for her sister and wanted to be a part of it. You see even though what he was doing was obviously awful, but it comes from a certain viking warrior perspective that "hard hits create strong man" Like what he said about canute and what he wants olmar to be.

    • @Mukatutu
      @Mukatutu Рік тому +1

      This comment seems like what a manga reader who has unrevealed (as of s2episode11) knowledge or experience with a character would say. Or someone who can read the characters minds.
      So far with the way he's presented, most normal people will not like him as a character and even hate him as a character currently because of the way he acted and his eagerness to provide punishment to the kid. Let's also not forget that his immediate suggestion was to chop off their arms which Pater helped prevent. You can say that there isn't a sentiment against the beating or de-arming of children back then but like BOLDcast said even snake wasn't really into it.
      And yes, part of the Viking culture or mindset includes violent acts as signs of strength, but despite understanding this, there's no reason that anyone would normally find a character who wants to chop off the hands of children or eagerly beat the kid, even if it's due to "admiration of his guts", likeable. He was clearly painted to look like the "cruel one" in that entire sequence.
      Your perspective on Thorgil doesn't make any sense from what we've seen so far. So I'm going to have to assume this " is of a loving family older brother" and "I don't think it changes that he'd be a fierce protector" is a minor spoiler of some sort as to how he'll act in the future. Even though he has never showed any hostility or evil intent towards his family, there is also no indication that he is a "loving older brother" unless we can somehow read his mind or have witnessed him actually doing so, because that would serve as a good future"revealing" moment like "wow, despite how he acted towards the kid and his attitude towards war and pillaging, he is a fierce protector of his family and truly loves them".

    • @lucaspoon4202
      @lucaspoon4202 Рік тому +1

      @@Mukatutu I guess I can see what you're saying about my perspective seeming too knowledgeable with not enough context, but I disagree with your view that there just hasn't been any indication. Honestly going off his demeanor when around his father or brother, he just feels like a natural part of the family to me. A simple lack of hostility would manifest in him being either cold or disinterested or polite-mamnered or formal with them, but he's none of those. Maybe it's also my slight knowledge/familiarity with Japanese, but his mannerisms and tone when around them is genuine and friendly. He gives them his full attention and teases them, Olmar mostly, as a family member/sibling would - most notably as a jock type.
      I also completely separate the moral standards of today's world from those of back then. I just simply know and accept that a very common punishment for thievery back then was losing a limb, or a beating if you get off VERY EASY. That was simply the culture back then for many places. I think Snake is nice for that time period, at least as a Dane, and someone who has the wisdom not to resort to violence as a first choice regardless of the situation if he doesn't see it as worth hurting someone over. Pater is also just very wise and experienced with suffering. And Ketil, well, is as "nice guy" as you get as a Dane. I honestly don't like his passiveness.
      So I think honestly, half the reason Thorgil may seem to stand out so much as "the bad guy" is because he's the only true viking Dane there.
      I'm not gonna pretend to be a history nerd, but I feel the show has done a well enough job establishing the viking culture and world. I honestly believe that 90% of Askelads men would be willing cut a thieves arm off or give them a beating regardless of the theives age. They just aren't wise or sympathetic people and see physical pain as the way to learn and grow strong. If anything they're empathetic (as opposed to sympathetic) because they're very accustomed to the type of beatings they're handing out.
      And that's where I go back to my thing that I honestly think Thorgil beat the kid out of respect and acknowledgment. That's just their language. Some people in today's world can accept that and others just cant. Either is okay 👍
