This isn’t a completely true statement for any school of Buddhism I’m aware of. I suggest reading up in some primers for nuance on this topic. To put it simply here: being born means you already experience dukkha. It is necessary to understand conditioned existence to get to the other shore. You don’t have to experience any great suffering at all - Lord Buddha was a prince who thought deeply about the fragility of his high status, not someone who was forced by circumstance to live with great physical or mental pain. Other early arahants were similarly blessed, but nevertheless sought something beyond fragile and temporary worldly experience. I suggest reading the Ratthapala sutta to start. May you be well, happy and peaceful.
@@chesstom7172 I'd argue Nirvana in the Western world has really transcended being strictly tied to Buddhism (considering most people I know don't even know it's a Buddhist concept). In our western general philosophical consensus we really just took "Nirvana" and substituted it in for another way of saying "enlightenment", "paradise" etc. And in my opinion the general Native english speaking countries' general philosophical principles include some kind of sine wave-like relationship with suffering and pleasure, with enlightenment being some kind of ultimate end goal. And for that it makes sense for us to assert that suffering and hardship is required for the sake of reaching this end. That is without mention of the idea that the "suffering" in question is a really flexible term, especially to us Westerners. We often compare ourselves with those who are starving in Yemen and those who are being massacred in Palestine and consider ourselves to be almost incomparably priveleged, which usually leads to some kind of intuituve scaling down of our own personal problems as they are orders of magnitude less severe than those that others are experiencing elsewhere. But the wiser among the population will realise the rather paradoxical relationship between suffering and the individuality of human beings, leading us to realise that struggles are not something that can be compared in the same objective ways as length and time. And so we could really take the term "struggles" to mean whatever struggles would have been faced by us middle class or rich folks, or, for example, a prince.
