I can't believe I've only just found your channel. Amazing content, adding so much more to my understanding of the game. Especially the different, roles, positions and responsibilities👍🙏🏈❤️🎊 please can you confirm your accent for me. When I look at the screen and watch you, you sound south African. When I turn my head away and just listen to you, you sound austrailian/new Zealand. It's very confusing for me🤔
Been watching Rugby on and off for 15 years from the Super 12 days (and even played for a bit in primary school) but have never been able to really get into it like other sports mainly because I had no clue what was happening around breakdowns and how open-play turnovers happen. So I've made another attempt to try to understand it as the World Cup gets underway. This is was easily the best and clearest explanation I have seen. Thank you.
Thankyou! Yes I believe the game is just so much more enjoyable once you understand the rucks. it is such a massive part of the game and I don't think broadcasters do enough to explain what is happening to new viewers.
I have been watching Rugby Union for last 30 years and I have mainly picked up the rules by watching. However, with the advent of kids growing up, playing and watching Rugby, I always get asked what's going on, why is that a foul and generally can't answer. These videos and the precise and clear way you dictate, has made my life a lot easier and makes me sound dead clever......many thanks, although here's to the Lions stuffing you on Saturday!!!
Watched and played rugby for years, and half the time still did not know what the ruck was going on. Great job explaining even to those " in the know".
Thank you! I just joined a rugby team and it's my first time playing a sport. An embarrassing number of team members, articles, and other videos have tried to explain this to me unsuccessfully. Your explanation, (with the extra help of being able to back up and rewatch as often as needed) has been the clearest explanation so far. I think I have a grasp on most of the basics now!
These videos a great companion to the world cup for the casual fan! I found that bit about the contention for the ball being resolved in the first split seconds of the breakdown particularly enlightening.
Excellent, I knew a bit about rucks, but your approach of the different players involved makes it so much easier to understand. Should have seen this video decades ago, my understanding of what goes on in the ruck would have been so much faster.

This is a very in depth video, specially in the referee signals, there are a lot that i didn’t understand so this video will help me A LOT understanding what is going on in the World Cup. Thank you. I will have to watch this video more than one time to understand it completely lol
Watched a few videos now and loving the series, watched one on the role of the props and this and learned a lot and I have been watching rugby for ages. Thanks
You're doing great videos. Ive followed the game for years abd played 30 years ago as a school boy. However ive picked it back up in my 40s. The game has slightly changed and understanding this as a player is really helpful. Keep up! You'll be showing tactics soon!
@couchrugby do you guys do walking rugby? It's a great little sport for older players and players coming back from Injuries. It's slow enough for new folk to understand.
When I played rugby at school, the rucking part of the ruck was still in full force - a player could use their feet not only on the ball, but on the player on the ground... I am so glad that's changed from a player safety point of view.

I’ve just started our new season and I used to be fullback but now all the young bucks are in backs so I’ve been moved to 6, these videos are helping so much. Now I just need to learn how to scrummage
A long time ago when I was playing, there was a counter-rucking move called “the flying wedge” which was very effective. Some of the greatest exponents of this were the Scots. Essentially, the back row bound together in a V shape and piled over the ruck,, charging opposition out of the way. It was basically banned because stomping on players on the ground was inevitable as the wedge charged forward and stamping was banned. A few scrapes and bruises for sure, but I always thought there was never a better way to clear out a ruck!
Great videos. I am from Spain, and starting to watch some rugby games and get some undertanding in order to enjoy the world cup. Your videos are helping me a lot. Thank you.

I am thrilled to see how Pablo Matera's turnover has become an edifying example on legal poaching... although I might add you are not bound by any rugby rule to make that smug face. I really like this channel, I have been watching rugby quite a long time and I kind of knew the rules, but it's great to have them explained to you in detail.

Great videos in the lead up to the world cup. The kicking out on the full or ground before and beyond or before the 22 is also something that gets a little confusing as a viewer and a big part of the game.
I watched all your videos and found them all really informative and I am ready to watch the World Cup later today. I would like a vid on the offside laws as this confuses me when watching the game. Cheers for the content.

Excellent video, mate. Very clear breakdown of the laws, presented in a logical and straightforward way, with relevant examples to support. I've been watching rugby for years but this really helped my understanding. I would've liked to have heard more about is the counter-rucking. For example is there any point at which the defending team cannot do this once a ruck has formed? E.g. is there a time limit as to when a counter ruck can be attempted, or as long as the ball is in the ruck is it ok? What are the laws regarding counter rucking? Is it just that the defending team has to push back over the ball all the attacking players in the ruck to affect a turnover? It would be great to see more videos in this series looking at the laws in other specific parts of the game e.g. mauls, scrums, lineouts, the offside line in open play and kicking duals, and I'm sure there are more. In something like scrums and lineouts for example, what are all the specifics of when the backs have to remain at a distance, and when can they move in? Please keep up the great work.👍
@truckcompany i think you find he regains his feet before he plays at the ball. Touching the ground is an indication of not supporting your own weight not an outright illegal move in its own right.
@@couchrugby "Rule: 15.15. Players on the ground must attempt to move away from the ball and must not play the ball in the ruck or as it emerges." If he's not supporting his body weight then he's on the ground. If he is 'moving away from the ball', then I have no idea what that rule means in this context. It makes more sense to penalties him
I am dating a kiwi and the family is crazy about rugby so I really want to understand it. I come from a country where isn’t popular at all but I find it very exciting and thanks to your videos I am learning a lot and able to properly enjoy the game
haha yes its one of those things about Rugby, no one ever knows everything. It is a sport you really can be a student of and never stop learning. Oh and Thankyou :)
Thanks for explaining the ruck for us. This, as well as the maul scenario were the two aspects if rugby that l didn't fully understand. All l would see are a bunch of guys piling up on each other with the referee's whistle being blown soon after. I now know how and why penalties are awarded in these situations.
i like the game but could hardly understand most of the penalties given during the game and yes ruck is most part of the game! glad i came across your video as it is very clear. still need to watch more games to recognise them instantly though
Thank you very much for this video. I now understand and will enjoy the game more. If you could make a video on splits. 6/2 etc. and the reasons for splt.
What happens if the ball carrier after being tackled ends up with the ball on the opposition's side, if he follows the law and releases, can any opposing player then just picked up the ball and go if no ruck has formed. If a ruck has formed, who has ball possession ? Opposition or the original attacking team ?
Hi Olivier. Amazing, welcome to Rugby! You are in luck. I am working on that video as we speak and am hoping to get it out in the next few days, so stay tuned :)
Your videos are great man! Im a portuguese ex-rugby player that left the game too soon because of injury . Im now stoked at our presence in this WC and would love to join a veterans team... as a 35 year old it may not be easy to fall back in shape to play good rugby again! Are you still playing at 37? Cheers!
Hey great stuff here, could you time stamp your videos? Some of us want to clear up or learn more about one single issue and it is tough to do that without timestamps. Again great info, nice stuff.
Great explainations! Looking forward to you covering the scrum! I have no idea what scrum penalties are for half the time. I would recommend turning down the background music a tad more when you are speaking as I found it tricky to concentrate on your voice at times.

Firstly, I love these videos. They keep popping up in my feed and I live then. Just checking in, though, at about 13 minutes, when the Pumas poacher steals from the All Blacks, he looks to be doing so illegally because he's not supporting his own body weight. I completely understand if the footage you've chosen is there because it clearly shows a poacher etc, and I know you didn't have time to go into detail with the nuances of poaching etc, but I just wanted to point it out as illegal poaching. That said, this is a wonderful overview, and I love the effort and time you put into these videos. Thank you so much!

Long hair is a sign of virility. So the scientists are saying. I don't always look like a Dragonfly - just in season.
Thank you from 🇺🇸 You are awesome!
Thankyou :)
I am dating a kiwi and the family is crazy about rugby so I really want to understand it. I come from a country where isn’t popular at all but I find it very exciting and thanks to your videos I am learning a lot and able to properly enjoy the game
Happy to read that! hopefully they agree I am teaching you the right things :)
Youre really good at explaining thing hey! 👍🏾😊 there are some things I knew but so many things I didnt know!
haha yes its one of those things about Rugby, no one ever knows everything.
Great videos! Keep it up.
Could I ask a video on mauls and how it works?
Great recap
Thanks for the great explanation
Thank you very much for this video. I now understand and will enjoy the game more. If you could make a video on splits. 6/2 etc. and the reasons for splt.
Excellent :) that is what I hope these videos are doing. Also yes that is a good idea for a video. I may do something for that.
@@couchrugby Thank you
Excellent, thanks 😊
Thanks for this! Please can you do a video on the maul.
What happens if the ball carrier after being tackled ends up with the ball on the opposition's side, if he follows the law and releases, can any opposing player then just picked up the ball and go if no ruck has formed. If a ruck has formed, who has ball possession ? Opposition or the original attacking team ?
Great question! I hope he answers. Would really like to know.
Can you do lineouts and in touch rules? And why penalty kicks are aimed to go in touch?
excellent video!
Thankyou :)
Just starting this year at under 15s, coach suggested I should research scrum half. would love to see a vid on that
Cheers!
Todays game was epic 😎 Bula 🖐
good video, one question, you cannot play the ball at all with your hands when a ruck is formed right? Has to be with the foot?
Hey great stuff here, could you time stamp your videos? Some of us want to clear up or learn more about one single issue and it is tough to do that without timestamps. Again great info, nice stuff.
Great explainations! Looking forward to you covering the scrum! I have no idea what scrum penalties are for half the time. I would recommend turning down the background music a tad more when you are speaking as I found it tricky to concentrate on your voice at times.
Thankyou. Yes I will be more mindful of the music volumes moving forward, thanks for the feedback.
I also have a scrum video in the pipeline :)
Just incase you were interested, I have uploaded a version of this video with the music turned down, hope it helps you understand it better :) ua-cam.com/video/2sG8Fb-XDQI/v-deo.html
I saw! Much improved. Thanks. I hope you've been enjoying the RWC!@@couchrugby
