  • This video is a review of an Old Town Discovery 119 Sportsman solo canoe. This canoe is not perfect, but it will work well for my nature photography, recreational paddling, and occasionally for fishing.
The Discovery 119 canoes are considered hybrids - a cross between a canoe and a kayak. The kayak features include the height of the seat. A person sits lower in a Discovery 119 - not on the bottom of the canoe, but lower than in a typical canoe. This canoe also has adjustable foot pads, like a kayak. Otherwise, most of the features are seen on canoes - open space with easy entry and exits.
At less than twelve feet long this canoe does face some tracking issues. However, paddling with a kayak paddle minimizes the errors. It weighs 56 pounds with a capacity of 354 pounds.
For a small canoe, the Discovery 119 is very stable and offers much for paddlers.

Thanks for sharing this, I'm looking at getting back into canoeing and comparing different smaller canoes

Great stuff! I’ve never seen past the cabins and up the river before, so thanks for the tour!

    I love "pre-scratched" as well.

I really agree having something you can bang around a little is liberating. We did 9.2 miles on the Yellow River this weekend and had a few drags. I couldn't imagine doing that in a Kevlar vessel. What PFD do you use with the ghillie suit?
