Without it being street legal, I'll stick to a truck. The biggest part of overlanding is the adventure getting there. We drive cross country multiple times a year and typically need to be at a destination at a certain date. We factor that in to our trip, but don't have time to unload that off a trailer play for a couple days then continue the trip. We take routes that are still getting us closer to the destination, just detoured off the interstates. Having all the gear on the truck, we can stop wherever.

This would make more since for places like Big Bend, impractical for something like Enchanted Rockies or Texas to Alaska etc.
Just buy used jeep wrangler
