Paternoster Lift Might Be the Most Interesting Elevator Type

- #shorts Paternoster lifts are a type of elevator characterized by their continuous loop of open compartments moving slowly in a vertical loop without stopping. Originating from Europe in the 19th century, these lifts are named after the "Our Father" prayer, reflecting their ceaseless flow similar to rosary beads.

We may not have enough smart people left to make use of this elevator
💯- I was going to say: “study human behavior today around an escalator for an hour…40-60% have mental-physical dysfunction getting on & off escalators

Non-compatible people will be collected to the attic and basement.
Are you sure 😂
Are you saying it is cure for stupid ?
Used to have one of these in my college in UK. There was a rumour that it was dangerous to go over the top, so very few ever did. But in pre smartphone days when people observed their surroundings, it was a perfectly viable way of moving between floors
Let me guess. University of Sheffield?
Arts Tower.
They had one in Napier College in Edinburgh in the 1970's. We used to go up and over at the top quite a lot.
There's no danger going over the top or going under the bottom
what do you mean going over the top? You’re ridiculous.
@theCrusherboom it rises up and then switches to the other shaft when you go over the top or under the bottom. The car remains hanging in a normal position as the passenger cars loop around the top and bottom.
Paternoster lifte are a continuous loop. Great fun. Used one daily at Birmingham poly & Aston uni. Usually placed next to conventional elevator/lift as not practical for wheelchair users- but fine with sticks or crutches. I'm disabled (polio) so use sticks.Max 2 persons adjacent as stepping in and out must be simultanious if both get in & out at the same time. Sometimes prankers would crowd-block the down side at the bottom level, forcing the occupants to stay in the box for the dark sub-terrainian switch over/under (no lights) - so those claustraphobes soon learnt to use the stairs. Great invention.
Catholics use a paternoster loop of beads to keep prayer focussed.
This device appears in a scene in an Italian hospital in the movie The Omen [1975]
Just don't get drunk when you get on it.
😂
An escalator for elevators.
Had one in our local technical college for many years - great system - no waiting and never heard of any accidents. Was a joke about it turning upside down at the top lol, but it moved sideways 😁
Thanks you for explaining I was thinking the same
Pater Noster is Latin, it means, Our Father.
You pray before and after. !
Our father. ! SoS
As in who art in heaven. It’s the equivalent of “Ave Maria”.
Pater Noster is the opening prayer of the rosary and the revolving cabins are like beads on a rosary chain.
@@altudyOriginally, It had NOTHING to do with a Catholic rosary ‼️ It's the Lord's Prayer translated into the Latin of the Messiah's pagan executioners.😎
Because it looks like rosary in a person's hand when they prey.
The military HQ I.G. Farben Building in Frankfurt (later the Abrams Building in '75) had one. Now a University building.
I rode that one in the 1960's. Air Force brat.
That's why we need warning labels that say do not eat laundry detergent.
❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊
Used in feed or grain mills usually much smaller
I remember Pilsbury Mill in Springfield, Illinois. The had one that traveled between floors but it was basically only a very small
step on - step off foot rest and a handle to grab onto while you made your trip.
Went in one of these at Birmingham University back in 1970 . My father was working on it . Been over the top and underneath . 🏴
Remember those from the Abrams building in Frankfurt Germany.
We still got them in Queen Victoria building in George St S ydney and it's lovely ...you really feel the thoughtful ingenuity of its honourable, respectful and romantic antique yet modern value of it ....absolutely valuable.
We need a modern, safe version of this to be developed. I've spent hours of my life waiting for the lift only to find it's full of people.
It's perfectly safe if you're aware of your surroundings and step on and off , many shops had these , children used to use these
Hours? Take the stairs to a different floor or out the lobby. Who waits hours for an elevator?
@user-zq3gf4pf8l I'm talking specifically about shopping centres where I have a full shopping trolley and need to move between floors. The lift is full of people who could use the escalator and also enter the lift on it's way down, when they wish to go up. Every time the lift opens it is packed with people.
There is something similar to this. It's called an escalator.
@@grantjoseph8050 Have you tried going up 20 floors via escalator?
We had one at my college. On Freshers' day we went over the top then stood on our heads coming down, for the benefit of the new students.
I remember when I was a kid: there was a parking garage downtown. In the parking garage there was a one man elevator that worked like this, but it was open wih a small shelf for the garage attendants to stand on as the went up on one side, then down on the other. Then, one day, a young man, an employee, did not get off at the top and was crushed to drath. It made the news.
I remember my 1st time riding it as a 8 year old in the IG Farben bldg. I approached it quite cautiously, having seriously pondered the consequences of off-nominal entry or exit.
We had one of these in an office I worked in back in the 80s. They can be a bit scary getting on and off and dangerous if you do not get the timing right. Some riders for fun used 'do the circuit' and stay on to prove you can go over or under on the continuous loop - not me !...
There’s an obvious advantage: No circuit boards. But 50% downtime.
Circuit boards? It's not the 80's. There are circuit boards that have been running maintenance free for decades.
That's how the London Eye works
It's not dangerous and it's energy efficient. It's a clever design.
I dare you to stretch your arm out while waving bye. 😂
When I was at university of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK someone was killed by a paternoster lift, it was removed afterwards
Wrong
They are being phased out for not being accessible to wheelchairs ...and for being more dangerous than cabin lifts.
I like them lot...probably mainly because of their rarity - but they're getting rare for a reason.
At a minimum, it's going to be painful and potentially cause serious injury if any part of your arm, leg, or body isn't completely onboard/inside the lift as it goes up. And it consumes energy all day long like an escalator, regardless of whether anyone is using it (or not).
Still, it's a cool invention for its time/era.
be more interesting to see the workings of this, how do the compartments turn over/round?
I don’t trust my legs to work right when I really need them to! 😂
Why don't we have more of them?
Lawyers.
They need breakable items or they won’t earn enough money 💰
To save lives
There was one in the Federal Foreign Office building in Bonn, Germany, which was built in the 1950ies, so not all that old.
aaah , so ? I lived in Bonn for years ( i fact , I was born there ) and did not knew there was one. My father was a international press reporter and worked at the bundeskanzer press buildings
I love the idea of traveling alone! No awkward conversations with strangers.
That's really cool. But I can just imagine the lawsuits.
😢
You must be an American, not noted for common sense. Blame culture all the time pathetic
It has been used AND STILL IS, by emploees in parking buildings.
Revolving doors, escalators, you gotta pay attention.
In the 70s I worked in a big department store in Leeds we had one of these for staff. I had a girlfriend work there too we used to stay on it and ride over the top it gave you a bit of time for a kiss and cuddle.
Dont pick phone while driving on these stairs😂
It’s looks like a secret compartment in a Mafias boss’s room
Seen these in a London store back in the 60's
US Army V Corp Headquarters, IG Farben Building in Frankfurt Germany had one of these when I was there 1975 - 1977.
Never look at your phone while riding these elevators 🚪
It looks fun 😅 especially since it’s quite slow. I can see myself using it a lot just to wave to people and dance around as if I were a doll in a box 😅😅
Welcome to Harry Potter 😂
Electricity: I'm a joke to you
They had this at a flour mill in St. Louis
Looks like final destination waiting to happen.😅
There used to be one of these in an office building near Houndsditch in London. A bit disconcerting at first and I did wonder if I would be standing on my head if I stayed on all the way to the top.
To many lawyers in my country
elevator form functioning as an escalator.
“ Lawyers reaction “
💵💵
Next stop-waiting room at ER
Glade to see it's still in use.
There was one in a telecommunications building in Rotterdam the Netherlands
Easy to use, and very safe to do so
Just keep jour hands free, and don't carry any more than your bag
Also no reason to panic if you mistakenly forget to get off on the top/lower floor as the cabin will stay upright and just move over to the other shaft, if you do this you may see the big wheel that's part of the drive system
Looks dangerous, is dangerous. Hence, the prayer.
Reminds me of an escalator in a strange way.
With people using their smartphones like zombies nowadays, this elevator will be a disaster
Is John on this floor?
Half of him is here..
I think this is where they got the idea for Elevator action..
A perpetual lift 😂
I always steered clear of those
Birmingham Polytechnic had one and it was great, no waiting around
Used to be one in the tower building at Salford University in the 80's - scary at first but fun...
Where do the lifts go?
Did you see the fella at the start with the grey pony tail😂
It’s just like an escalator!!! Same thing..😊
The Parliament house of Finland in Helsinki has this kind of elevator
Is there a video of upside down change over?
We had one I stayed in on both the top and bottom it's rotates sideways and run on runners Peterborough hospital in 80-80s
Look like the old lady was handling it.
How does it keep moving in one direction? What happens at the top and bottom?
This type was in the Amsterdam Police office Marnixstraat.
cant bring groceries on that lift
It looks safer than being shut waiting for the doors to open ..
All buildings should have one no crowding
They had one in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
I call it an accident waiting to happen
I think it stops if you leave an arm or a leg out and it gets caught between the floor and the ceiling.
why dangerous ? - same concept as an escalator
They’ll know how smart they were when lawsuits are served for injuries
Had one where I worked in the 80s, great invention. I would imagine that health and safety have shut them all down.😢
I think this is the one in the Danish Parliament Folketinget in Christiansborg Copenhagen.
The Danish Parlament uses this device still.
There was one at the Winfrith nuclear establishment admin building in the UK and was removed after some mishaps by users
Note to self..stay at friends house after night of drinking… 😒
Imagine going to the top of an 80-story building. Would take all day
Yeah, they had to close it cause it is in official building in Prag and tourists were going there 24/7 but if you like i think they still have one in Brno
How many injuries total up till date?
That is in UK I believe this happened in America and someone trips and falls they sue and shut it down
Purpose built for the hospital industry
They had one in Aston University, WARWICKSHIRE. but it’s not used anymore….
This will be akward for muggles... but normal for us in Diagon Ally... 😅😅😊😊
I would imagine some goofy, uncoordinated person will mess around and get kilt using this elevator.
When there was no cellphones not now that people don't pay attention to their steps
It's safe unless if you are the type of a person that HEGEH HEGEH
Where is this?
It's like a real life video game!!!
I’ve seen smaller versions of this before back in the 60s.
That glass panel on the top could be linked to a limit switch that tuens the motor off. So if someone got stuck, it would lift the panel and cut the movement off.
That is in Prague … the best City in the world! Citizens are Very Nice and friendly people
Super store in Munster Germany had one great fun
Our father, pater noster
Popeye was right when he said "escalavator"
Great idea💕
Had one in gov building in Chemnitz, Germany. Down right scary to ride. There are loud creakings and banging to go with it. If you don't get off you can ride all the way around. I think I made it on once.
I remember riding something similiar in the 1950s in Detroit. (Yeah, I'm old as dirt.) The thing I remember didn't have the closed boxes in between, and there was a hinged portion in the floor at the entrance that could swing up to prevent accidental amputations.
Seems a much better type of lift
