While it is an absolute shame we'll never see rail over this bridge and over the Snoqualmie Pass again, I am glad to see the railbed at least going to something rather than being lost to time. Can't wait to ride across it myself one day

As a rider of the trail who always dreamt of continuing on eastward, this is a dream come true! The people of Washington deserve to enjoy this recreational opportunity and the history it preserves.

That bridge had winds so strong back in the day that there was a signal light at each end to warn for high winds. Railroad cars actually were blown off the bridge, it could get so bad there. I'm not sure how keen I'd be to take a bike or horse across at a time like that. All that said, I'd love to see this bridge open to the public!

I know most of this line was converted to rail trail but Amtrak should buy the rail trail and the bridge. This way they don't have to share with other railroads.

Damn trails6! Do they provide jobs? Do they move people and goods? NO! Then people complain about polution, highway congestion, crowded air ports

Is there a timeframe for this restoration? I know they recently finished the Renslow trestle near Kittitas. This would be a huge extension of the trail.

I’m wondering why 5.5 million dollars is needed for that bridge to be used by people walking, biking and on horses? I see the missing wooden cross beams. I’m guessing that they would add some kind of fences on each side. Maybe it needs some structural repairs?

Too many costs to list them all here but major ones would be: Bridge pier renewal; crosstie removal and replacement with pre-fabricated concrete roadway sections; blasting and painting the bridge truss members; security provisions, i.e. fencing to keep people from climbing on the bridge and fencing to enclose the road surface; baffles to cut the wind; communication infrastructure for emergency use; lighting, both security and aesthetic. I could go on. Just renewing those bridge piers is going to cost a lot. On and on and on. It will be worth it when it's done.

Then how the Hell did they get across the river ?? In my saying.. The bikers and the rest should put up money for a bridge.. If you can afford a $1,500 bike or a $38,000 wagon.. You can afford a small bridge.. They need to open the Beverly bridge back to rail Traffic.. Rail traffic is better. Serve more customers.. Bikes and wagons don't bring money. They spend a little money.. But Railroads bring money..

Amtrak should buy it. This way they can have there own line and won't have to share with other railroads.

The 1929 vintage, two lane U.S. 66 "Chain of Rocks" bridge crossing the Mississippi River, is a mile long and connects Missouri with Illinois. It has now been preserved as a walking/bike trail.

Bad Idea. For one it is too expensive... Quit whinning and drive your buggie to the other side. Two it is original, changing it will ruin the attractive mystery that it is. Three endangered birds nest on it, people will scare them off and the babbies will fall into the columbia. Four the locals already make plenty of money, and don't really want tons of people coming there. At the moment anyone can visit the place and ride a bike. It is nice there because not many people. That is what makes it nice. To bring tons of people there will ruin it. 5th it is dishonest to say it will complete a trail, there is another bridge that you cannot cross over 1-90 (how much does the greedy contractor want to fix that one) and part of the line is still in use so it is a lie to say it will complete a trail. 6th, it is a peacful wildlife refuge and hunting area where people like to shoot and hunt. Bike riders dont like shooting. Bike riders have so many places to ride it is rediculous, they have taken over everything. Target shooters and hunters don't have very many places. Don't get me wrong I love bike riding and I have crossed the bridge, but to comercialize this place will destroy the beauty and the mystery that makes it attractive. Please leave this place alone. Maybe put in a cheap wooden walkway, and remove the no tresspass and fence. Leve the bridge original and put up a sign "at your own risk" You people blow money that we dont have.....

Scott Clark , cyclists pay taxes . The bridge over I 90 is under repair now. If we do not get people out to ride and use these beautiful lands, we will lose them forever as we almost did in 2015 when state senators tried to give 130 miles of this trail to there constituents, with out review. Lost forever to everyone. Also, it is part of a bigger picture, a national trail spanning across the country end to end. Ask people in little byway towns if they want money from tourists, you think they ‘have plenty of money’ think again.

There's no such thing as "at your own risk." Somebody will ultimately be responsible for the first fatality that will happen under your "at your own risk" fantasy and that somebody will be you; Joe taxpayer. The state would pay more in the first legal settlement than it would if the bridge was rehabbed as part of a trail.

@@douglasskaalrud6865 North of St. Louis, MO is the mile long, U.S. Route 66, "Chain of Rocks," two lane highway bridge that crosses the Mississippi River. It was built in 1929 and last used by vehicular traffic in 1970 and then closed for decades just rusting away. For awhile, the old bridge looked like it was going to be scrapped and demolished. Eventually, it was fixed up and today it is mainly used as pedestrian and bike trail linking Missouri and Illinois with occasion use by autos for special events generally regarding old U.S. 66.

So to minimize liability costs they would need to remove all of the timber decking and, replace the deck with precast concrete panels, like what New York State did with the Poughkeepsie bridge, crossing the Hudson River, some 200 feet above. The structure can handle the extra weight, formerly able to carry trains. As well, any arsonist couldn't attempt to set any of the decking on fire! There is nothing to set fire to!
On May 8, 1974, that Poughkeepsie bridge had its decking "catch fire" somehow. Firefighters had a very tough time trying to shoot water up some 200 feet. I believe that installing those precast concrete panels for the decking was a smart idea by New York state.
