Lincoln's Inn Fields is a public square in central London, located in the London Borough of Camden. It is the largest public square in London and was laid out in the 1630s. The square has a rich history, with notable events including the public beheading of Lord William Russell in 1683, following his implication in the Rye House Plot for the attempted assassination of King Charles II.
Today, Lincoln's Inn Fields is surrounded by various institutions and landmarks. On the south side of the square, you'll find the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Royal College of Surgeons, which houses the Hunterian Museum. The square itself is a popular spot for locals and visitors, offering a peaceful green space in the heart of the city.
The square is also known for its historical significance in the legal profession. It is home to Lincoln's Inn, one of the four Inns of Court in London, where barristers of England and Wales belong and where they are called to the Bar. The Inn's history dates back to at least 1422, making it one of the oldest legal institutions in the country.
The Old Curiosity Shop in London is a historic building located at 13-14 Portsmouth Street, Holborn, WC2A 2ES. It is often associated with the Charles Dickens novel of the same name, although there is debate about whether it actually inspired the book. The building dates back to 1567, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in central London. It features a wood-beamed exterior and an upper floor that slightly overhangs the pavement, giving it a distinctive Tudor-era appearance. Over the years, it has been used for various purposes, including as a dairy, a bookstore, and a shop selling antiques and souvenirs.
