Have you ever seen a fish that walks?
Perhaps some of the most unusual fishes are those that don’t move around primarily by swimming but instead ambulate along the sandy bottom. The black volcanic sand of Lembeh Strait, in Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia, is home to many of these fish.
The accompanying video shows a number of different fish species which have developed different ways of ambulating on the sand.
The pectoral and ventral fins of frogfishes have evolved into appendages, even some with toe like features, which are used to walk along the ocean floor.
Stonefishes and scorpionfishes use their pectoral fins to “jump” along the sand.
The lower two rays of the pectoral fins of devilfishes are detached from the fin and these fishes ambulate using these claw-like appendages, whereas the stingfish appear to use one such pectoral fin ray on each side to enable walking.
