- The self-declared "world's greatest counterfeiter," Frank Bourassa, printed $250 million in fake US currency until he was caught by an undercover cop in 2012. And yet he hardly served any jail time. In this episode, Bourassa reveals his process, and the aftermath of his arrest.

What if the best way to make more money … is to create it yourself? In this new documentary series from filmmaker Nathan Truesdell and Field of Vision, we follow folks who decided to take wealth creation into their own hands, and upended the meaning of “value” in the process. Meet a libertarian Florida coin-maker who dreams of bringing down the Federal Reserve; a Danish painter who supports a family of four by exchanging paintings for goods; and a master counterfeiter, who reveals how he minted hundreds of millions of dollars-and got off scot-free. As this series shows, there’s more than one kind of currency exchange.

There was a guy who counterfeited stamps and it was never known till after he died. his examples fetch more than the originals. He worked for a big company and handled all the outgoing mail, a nice niche.

Man, you could even buy your way out of prison with fake money.
When you have something like that and in that amount...bargain is not an issue.
Misheard Metal Canada is a strange and mysterious place.
The guy is not telling you the complete story. He got off because he gave up other counterfeiters. They arrested 12 others shortly after him that were running billions. He was part of a network and gave up the rest of the members, ever wonder how he was able to get that paper? He didn't just call them up there was an organized crime ring.
Sir you’re arrested for murder. Here is the body.
Wait. I’ve 200 bodies if you drop the charges.

Is it weird that I admire this guy? he's clearly resourceful and not dumb.
@Robert A that’s the problem with most crime though, getting caught.
@Robert A You should watch his interview with Jack from Darknet Diaries, it is much better than this one
I like this guy. He's solid. He's straight up, no bullshit. The kinda guy you would want watching your back as your friend but definitely not want the guy you want as your enemy either.

My dude definitely stashes 50 mil somewhere else and is living lavish like Larry since he got off Scott free
He told at the end where some of it might be :)
If he had a stash of 50mil i dont think hell even hint to it. Unless hes stupid of course. Chances are the swiss company told the feds exactly how much was supplied and the feds recovered more or less all of it based on weight.
The guy would be under serious amount of checks and audits as part of his plea. Im sure his means are checked frequently.
@@Professional_UA-cam_Commenter the Swiss company and feds figured out there was exactly $50m missing and now for whatever reason our guy has confessed to that.
He must be pretty confident it will never be found.
I'm thinking that surely it was currency that was purchased by his customers? meaning that he would receive 30% of street value. Or $15m before costs.
And there would be a lot of costs with everything from lawyers to production.
It's lucky he was able to even buy himself out of 60years in prison, he would be incredibly lucky if there was a meaningful amount of profit leftover too.
No, he sold it for $15,000.000

that's not luck bro .. he planned the scenario where he gets caught, so infact that's just him being clever
Theres no way that someone that planned the whole operation didn't do something so simple as a anonymous dropoff for a purchase. He was smart enough to know how to get the paper away. He's smart enough to know how to hide some of the money and just give away the operation.

Getting caught, get no jail time, keep 30% of 50M on the low and getting a job as a counterfeit expert is actually better than just not get caught. You just sleep better that way.
@@rolandochavez1839 you dont value money you dont earn. If you can print the 10k, you wont budget and live modestly, youll blow $200 a month in a fancy gym, $4000 a month onna fancy apartment, spend $400 on a sweater/pants etc. Soon youll want to print 20k, 40k a month.
Also the nature of this means you need other people involved in your operation. Although you might be happy with 10k a month. Others wont and youll need to produce higher quantities to keep your team happy.
I think tge weak link was relying on the paper maker to source original media. They are currency paper specialists. They supply to governments and you can bet governments scrutinise them and watch them like a hawk.

Quantitative easing is the world’s greatest counterfeiting
By law, they are allowed to print it though.
@@thetruth2509 By law that THEY PASSED themselves. They write it, they co-op legislators to pass it with bribe and it does. Usurpment of the highest degree is technically treason of a high degree as well! But they are in such high places, connected to the hilt with powerful circles, that nobody will ever end up serving those responsible actionable charges. Our government is already largely bought and owned by these same types of people.
Jgizzy -redacted- And, we adhere to or give them that power to do so. You can preach your typical big government babble, and it may even contain some valid points, but that doesn’t change the reality of the situation. That’s why you have federal fiat currency in your pocket right now. Do you ever get tired of waking up everyday with these thoughts in your head? You will never be Paul Revere streaming down the cobblestone streets screaming about the big and bad tyrannical government that’s coming. You’re a cog in the wheel and that’s all you’ll ever be.
Interbank lending is the 2nd biggest scam put on the American people. Quantitative Easing, and the Federal Reserve are tied for first.
NOBBERT Lol. You’re acting like I don’t understand that quantitative easing reduces purchasing power. Get over yourself. You aren’t the only individual to understand both macro and microeconomics. No one is worshiping the Fed here, Timothy McVeigh. The point is that you can’t counterfeit something if you are given or have taken the power to determine what is legitimate. I find myself wondering what would have happened if he had told his lawyer, "What would happen if I told you I had 100 million?" I think he would have walked and one day located the missing millions without anyone knowing about it.

I actually received a counterfeited bill in an exchange place at the Mexico City airport as I was on my way back to the States. It was about $1600 which was put in an envelope, put in my pocket and went on my way. As a collector, I check for "fancy" serial numbers and print errors, so during the flight I checked the bills when I got to the bill in question. It was a 2001 series. It had the stripe, watermark, the bright green numbers and stamp were all there. But just the feel was just slight different. I got home and made an iodine mix, sure enough, it started to turn dark. Cool, I have a very good counterfeit to add to my currency collection. Maybe it was one of yours Frank.
It's not going to have a stripe and water mark but be the wrong paper. Sorry. Your full of it
@@johnboys92 Please, do explain kid.
@@JohnnyXanax the stripe and water mark are exponentially harder to forge than it is to source the correct paper and even the same brand the government sources for their bills........ In other words you are full of shit. Kid
@@JohnnyXanax Did you watch the video? Frank copied the paper so that it would appear yellow, like a normal bill, do to the lower quantity of starch in the paper. Iodine is used in these pens which reacts with starch in most paper, marking the bill brown, but he bought paper with a lower starch content, most likely produced from cotton as that is what U.S. bills are produced from, which would pass the counterfeit pen test. If it turned dark = fake bill. He made them so they did not turn dark. Not his bill, but definitely counterfeit.
His was the right paper so it would pass the pen test- definitely not one of his 😂
