Stick with it my dear, it will get easier, I did the same thing years ago, I left england to come to Canada intending to stay only a year or two, ended up meeting the love of my life and I'm still here 57 years later, good luck in your new adventure and enjoy my homeland. Xxx
Congrats on the move! I just moved to London too and I really enjoyed seeing your experience of getting settled in. I definitely felt that loneliness at first too, but you’re so right that forcing yourself to do things is the best thing sometimes!
What beautiful and confident young lady you are, hope you fall in love with London and the rest of the UK as many before you have . And I can see you making many friends and breaking many hearts during your stay good luck and God bless on your journey.
Good on you Emma was a good move you will love London it is an amazing place lots to do and see and close to Europe and lots to visit in uk as well so be happy and lots of love from Australia
You’re so courageous and Brave making this move to England 🏴. Congratulations on this international move. Be proud of yourself and stay safe. xoxo
Your electric key is not that common in the UK anymore, it’s usually still in older places or places where landlords don’t want to upgrade the system lol
Pre-payment meters are also more expensive. It's a complete con! With the recent bill increases you're going to burn through money. Talk with your landlord and see if you can get a modern meter.
This video reminded me so much of the time I moved to England for online studying. I felt so lonely but also cozy and after investing in my surroundings and going out more, I fell in love with the place.
You won’t be lonely now you’re working. I was 19 when I moved on my own to London and stayed seven years (1978-1985). Visited again in 2019. I’d love to go and spend a long time there, the historic buildings are amazing! On another note, you would be better preparing your own food (gut health is important). The packaged salads in the supermarkets are amazing, we can’t get them here in Australia. I hope you make friends soon (hugs)
Thank you for posting such an honest vlog, Emma. I can definitely identify with you having moved around a lot in my early twenties. You seem like such a smart, determined person. Keep it up!
I remember when I moved to London from NZ for a year back in 2006, I had to set up a bank account from NZ as part of my visa requirement. It was a total headache but I was definitely happy to have that done and setup once I got to London seeing the hassles you had here.
Ah hope you have a fun time! I’m from London but moved by myself to the US so love seeing people push themselves to new opportunities. I lived in earls court before so near to where you are, if you haven’t been to Fulham road and kings road in Chelsea already it’s my fave place to hang out in southwest London. You’re apartment looks so cute too being in the best part of london
You are such a positive person. I hope you enjoy England. Once you are settled you will have to do a day trip to Bath, it is beautiful. You can do so much travel too as the countries are so close. I live in Australia and we traveled in 2010 and we had the best time in England. Wishing you joy as it will be so hard being away from family and friends. 🙂
Hey Emma, congratulations on moving and being so brave! When I moved out for University it was very lonely so I know how you feel! I live in London and if you ever wanted to meet up for a coffee or something I would be happy to! You got this girl! X
Welcome and congratulations on your new adventure ….your incredible…really looking forward to seeing your future vlogs …..to start in a new country on your own is so inspirational and to other wonderful young people I’m sure … ( I’m just shy of 59 so realistically I’m not going far now as roots are firmly planted 😉) I have loved watching you set yourself up in your new place and respect how accomplished you are …love all the cute colours ….well done ….hoorah let the adventures begin …
Congrats! Lived and worked in London then moved to Italy now to Dublin. Life is full of opportunities and you just took one! I’m a traveler so I know about feeling lonely, but trust me, London is a big city where if you befriend another immigrant, you’ll get friends sooner ;)
Well Emma I have just come across you this morning on UA-cam and I have to say what a beautiful, sweet young woman you are and believe me you looked nothing like a Zombie haha, way too stunning to be like that. You have done sooooo well moving in and putting your own stamp on the place. Great idea with the fireplace to match your lovely table, it'll all make it feel like a lovely home now. I hope you have a great time, wishing you all the best over here and you take care and stay safe. Think I need to catch up on more of your videos now as this one has cheered me up, thank you. ❤❤❤❤☺☺☺☺
Welcome to England, young lady. Please remember to get out and about as much as possible whenever you can. You've managed to arrive at the darkest and gloomiest time of year but, I assure you, by the end of January it will start to get a little brighter. Try to get out of London if you get a chance because there's a lot to see in our small country and most of it isn't in London. I've subscribed to watch your adventures so chin up and stay safe............................the ancient Englishman.
It's interesting when you were talking about the elderly Scottish man. I'm sure by speaking to you he didn't realise you were here on your own at that point and how good it felt for you to speak to someone, and maybe it was the same for him !
Welcome to the UK Emma, I really admire you for taking such a big step! Not surprised it was a Scottish man who chatted to you. , Hope you settle in and make friends quickly ! 💙💙💙💙💙🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Moving to the UK while young was something I really wanted to do, but now I have a family and can't pick up and move. Can't wait to see more of your journey here :)
I moved to West Kensington from the US as well (about 4 years ago). Looks like you might be in the same spot I was - loved it there! Happy to help with questions or recommendations given I’ve lived your current experience :) I’m near kings cross at the moment
Welcome to London. Spring is on the way. Lots of parks and green open spaces to explore. On recc in May, Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park. Google it and enjoy.
Congrats on this new chapter of your life! I love London - it's my fave city - so I'm excited for you (and more than a little jealous). You did a fantastic job with the coffee table and turning your apartment into a cozy little nest for yourself. Look forward to future vlogs. New subscriber!
Just a heads-up, be careful with customising your flat like putting vinyl over the fireplace. Renters in the UK are usually not allowed to do that and the landlord may take it out of your security deposit.
Congratulations on your move to London from NYC 🗽 that’s a big move! I’ll be moving to London next year from the states as well for school! I know you will meet friends and will do well! I can’t wait to see move Vlogs you just got a new subscriber! ♥️
Congratulations on your move to the UK you are most welcome, but make sure you get yourself out of London and visit other parts of the UK,it's not the biggest island in the world but it's definitely one of the most beautiful, Cornwall, Devon, the Yorkshire Moors, Oxford, Cambridge, York , Scarborough and my favourite seaside town Whitby, then you've got, Scotland, Ireland and Wales to explore, please please don't think London is the centre of the world IT'S NOT,I'm a 56yr old Englishman from the north east and I've never set foot in London and have no intention to do so.forgot to mention Durham,Anwick and Bamburgh castles to visit,Anwick is pronounced Anick and Bamburgh pronounced Bambra, hope you start to make some new friends and enjoy your new job.
Hey Emma, it’s great seeing your experience, I’ve just recently moved to London too and I do feel that loneliness, for this year I’ll definitely need to get myself out there and make the most of it.
Hi! I recommend trying to hang out with co workers or maybe in Camden…for me, it was super hard to make friends that were English, I couldn’t understand them ( every time I tried to have a heart to heart they would just go away). I feel like London is such a cool lace to meet people from all over the world that are in the same position as yours… that way, we connect deeper.
hey @Emma Hopkins this may seem wierd but I have lived in the West Ken area for all of my 26 years and would love to help you out - happy to meet for a coffee, show you around and anything else. Welcome to London!!
Buy a pay as you go data plan locally. Don’t use your US data! You can also get a PAYG internet plan from mobile companies that gives you wifi. And I’m sure you are probably already past this hurdle, but getting a UK bank is such a bigger hassle than in the US. I knew you were going to be unsuccessful on that first day, sorry. I actually used a company that set up the appointment for me and got me preset up with a bank before I left. But I am very impressed you were able to get a flat from abroad without trouble convincing them to rent to you as a foreigner. Good job.
Congratulations on your new chapter and good luck with the new job. I hope you have an amazing and positive experience during your time in London. Thought the smaller rug might fit well as you come in the door next to the cupboard where you do your makeup? Also, charity shops are really good for books and 2nd hand items, which you might find helps cut down the cost for pots pans oven dishes etc. In UK we also have a Primark Store, budget friendly and good for home products. Hope this helps.
Thank you for sharing your VERY busy and important week. I could only imagine the emotional ups and downs. I’m excited to see how your first week of work was. You’re kickin ass. Also, those hexagonal ray bans are killer 🤩
Hi! New subscriber here 😊I am also Canadian and I will be moving to northern Ireland soon with my husband and I came across your video in hopes of getting some idea on what moving to UK would be like. I really appreciate you making this video it’s giving me insight on what the first few days is like. The thoughts, the emotions, the logistics of moving etc. thanks for sharing your experience. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Good luck!
Avod using the dryer as much as possible they are soooooo expensive to run and even more so when you are on a pre payment meter as they are always a higher rate. Good Luck!
Thank you for sharing this part of your journey! I may be in a very similar boat too (both in location and emotion) so subscribing in the hopes that you will share more insight on the relocation process~
Tips for moving to a new city on your own: schedule factime dates with friends and family, look up fb groups for your area and see if there are any 'meet new friends' groups and reach out, find hobbies that you like and if there are any groups out there
Welcome to the UK hope you do settle down even if only for the year you are here I'm sure you Will like London it's a vast and exciting city certainly so much to do and see perhaps you can get in touch with some of the other people who have moved here from Canada and the us and talk or meet with them for advice and guidance and support good luck with your job and keep Safe
A lot of rented accommodation have those electricity meters now due to it being easier for landlords not being left with outstanding bills ...also you can get smart meters where you top up on an app on your phone , but most of us have monthly bills in the post and every now and again a meter guy comes round to read your meter....ok that probably bored you to years 😂😂...London can be lonely for the first couple of months, but then it becomes one of the best places on earth once you start working and making friends and going for a drink in the afternoon by the river ...have fun 😉🙃🥳
Welcome from Yorkshirein the North. Contact EDF and ask them to remove the pre- payment meter and install a smart meter. Its free and cheaper, you'll be able to set up a direct debit.
The landlord can demand that she returns the meter to a prepayment meter before she leaves and withhold some of her deposit if she doesn’t. Many landlords prefer prepayment as it stops them getting landed with a huge bill if someone moves out without paying their bill. I think it’s infoair Lrs more expensive- if it wasn’t I think it’s a great way to budget.
The pre-pay electricity meter is an expensive way to pay for your electricity. Must be something your landlord has done but most people have a normal meter that you pay every 3 months.
Whatever happens be prepared for increases in energy prices; - lets say your '$20' top up lasts you 4 days, expect it to last for only 2 by the end of April (though if you have electric heating, hopefully won't have it on for so long by then).
Well played, and so brave. As I was watching one of your videos, I said to myself, "girl, you need to visit Cambridge" (my home town) 2 minutes later there you were! 🤣 what did you think of my beautiful city? If you haven't done a river Thames tour, yet, I highly recommend it. (I'll happily take you) I assume you've done the covert garden stuff. The tower of London is very good too. I'm an international recruiter, I use to live in the States for 10 years, recently. If you ever want to go back to New York, (I have clients in New York, as well as many other places over there) or want a fresh challenge, let me know, I'd love to be your recruiter. Good luck with everything.
You would probably get a 4 storey 4 bedroom 4 bathroom new build with integrated garage in Yorkshire for what you pay for that studio, but I suppose London has a certain attraction.
The key fob is usually in student/studio type flats, this is a kind of a security for landlords to ensure the bills get paid ! Too often students and travellers abscond. Mainly in U.K. we have bills.
In case you don't know you need to purchase a tv license to use it even with your computer in England. They are really serious about it and the fines are pretty high.
Read up about it and decide what to do. I would encourage you to get a license. The people saying you don't need one, may think they are helping, but if you do get fined, I can't imagine any of them will pay it for you !
Congrats on you move. I would say for sure talk to your landlord about the electric meter as you pay a lot more with a key than you do with monthly direct debit
Just a word of advice, keep your bag zipped up when you go out. And be aware of dodgy people. Don't suffer fools gladly!!. With that in mind have a lovely time and meet new friends.
You're not going to have a problem with anything, you'll be settled in and have a great relationship with a lovely Englishman before you know it. Good luck to you!
You can change the meter and pay bills annually but the key was brought in for all kinds of people specially people low paid I had a key on a few occasions at least you don't get any bills through your door anyway anyone's choice
Rug in a kitchen, next to cooker? Probably not the best idea with a boiling hot pan of oil! That table looked like the missing Lois 14th infant wrapping table! Was priceless until you painted it pink!
Stick with it my dear, it will get easier, I did the same thing years ago, I left england to come to Canada intending to stay only a year or two, ended up meeting the love of my life and I'm still here 57 years later, good luck in your new adventure and enjoy my homeland. Xxx

Your electric key is not that common in the UK anymore, it’s usually still in older places or places where landlords don’t want to upgrade the system lol
They are also used when people get into debt and can’t pay their bill. The debt is paid off every time the key is topped up
I believe.
Pre-payment meters are also more expensive. It's a complete con! With the recent bill increases you're going to burn through money. Talk with your landlord and see if you can get a modern meter.
Even b tv
Call you power company and get it changed to a normal meter which you pay on direct debit as only tenants can do this. Best of luck.
Just remember electricity is cheapest at night!

@@scruffyo4460 I think she’s just being friendly. London can be super lonely if you’re an expat. That being said, I agree with you.
Loving these videos! Considering moving from Canada as well and this is really comforting to watch. 💞

I feel like London is such a cool lace to meet people from all over the world that are in the same position as yours… that way, we connect deeper.
Camden is such a relaxed place sooo opposite from the rest of London, which is usually a business land…I loved meeting people there
Welcome to London 🙂 it will get easier soon ☺️ also if you need anyone to hangout with I would be more than happy to show you around.
hey @Emma Hopkins this may seem wierd but I have lived in the West Ken area for all of my 26 years and would love to help you out - happy to meet for a coffee, show you around and anything else. Welcome to London!!
Love the coffee table you have done a good job 👍
This is helpful. Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing your VERY busy and important week. I could only imagine the emotional ups and downs. I’m excited to see how your first week of work was. You’re kickin ass. Also, those hexagonal ray bans are killer 🤩

This was the first thing on my home page today and couldn't be more timely to me as someone about to move to London, from California, as a Canadian
Best of luck!!
Avod using the dryer as much as possible they are soooooo expensive to run and even more so when you are on a pre payment meter as they are always a higher rate. Good Luck!
Well, every place has its good and bad points - I hope you enjoy your stay here. I think you'll find it a lot nicer when the weather warms up.
Thank you for sharing this part of your journey! I may be in a very similar boat too (both in location and emotion) so subscribing in the hopes that you will share more insight on the relocation process~
London is a lonely city! As regards this aspect of life, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere!…x and take care always ok.

I just moved here from NYC a few weeks ago too!
Welcome to London 🙂 I hope you are well
You have a beautiful face and voice! Best wishes on your move and career👋💕 You will make wonderful friends!
You would probably get a 4 storey 4 bedroom 4 bathroom new build with integrated garage in Yorkshire for what you pay for that studio, but I suppose London has a certain attraction.

Don't buy TV license. I say this as a certified Brit. No one is ever prosecuted for it. It's a tax on the elderly and the stupid essentially
buy a tv licence if you have a TV dont buy it for a computer. as the won't bother trying to figure out if you use it as a tv
Only for watching live broadcasts and BBC iplayer.
Read up about it and decide what to do. I would encourage you to get a license. The people saying you don't need one, may think they are helping, but if you do get fined, I can't imagine any of them will pay it for you !
Claiming this!! Would love to move to London and call my home a “flat”
Congrats on you move. I would say for sure talk to your landlord about the electric meter as you pay a lot more with a key than you do with monthly direct debit
Off to a great start!
People always complain about the English weather but there are so many other countries that are far colder, including Canada and New York in winter.
Grey and damp cold is more challenging (bone chilling) than dry and overcast. Cloudless sunny UK days are celebrated, even if damp.
Great upload thanks
There is monthly data. Good offers from Vodafone. You can ' pay as you go '. Data in UK is relatively cheap.
Just a word of advice, keep your bag zipped up when you go out. And be aware of dodgy people. Don't suffer fools gladly!!. With that in mind have a lovely time and meet new friends.
6 hours for a wash and dry? have you got your settings right? A wash shouldn't take any more than 45 mins.
I agree! I'd check that out as it will drain your electricity very fast.
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this about washer dryers. Personally think they’re crap.
You're not going to have a problem with anything, you'll be settled in and have a great relationship with a lovely Englishman before you know it. Good luck to you!
London is fab!
The electricity key, I find, is better than a monthly bill, you know what you spend
You look fantastic without make up. With skin like that you don’t even need any. And , I think you are incredibly brave .
things will get better dont be lonely , and stay safe , go to the markets thrift shops are great for cool stuff,
Welcome to the U.K. A word of caution. The electricity key meters are actually more expensive than billed electricity.
if you had moved to manchester or liverpool two big northern cities you could have afforded triple this space
Just get a Starling Bank Account for now. It's so much quicker than waiting for the big banks. Good luck dear
Hi Emma, welcome to 🇬🇧 . Hope you’re going to be happy. Love your new chairs, where are those from? X x
Amazon!
I haven’t seen an electric metre in at least 30 years! Your landlord is too tight to upgrade lol.
Hey im down the road from you maybe 20mins lol welcome to London 🙂🙂🙂
You can change the meter and pay bills annually but the key was brought in for all kinds of people specially people low paid I had a key on a few occasions at least you don't get any bills through your door anyway anyone's choice
I grew up close to Holland Park… hope you visited the Kyoto Garden?
Good bless dear

Yep. Just don’t be intimidated by anyone asking if they can came in and inspect. You don’t have to let them in.
Rug in a kitchen, next to cooker? Probably not the best idea with a boiling hot pan of oil! That table looked like the missing Lois 14th infant wrapping table! Was priceless until you painted it pink!
Welcome to London! 🇬🇧
