    You're in Phazon Mines with 6 e-tanks so it's going to be super hard. You say you love the Metroidvania genre, but you're not powering up your character through exploration, a key tenet of the genre. The game is soft telling you to explore more.

      I had several more energy tanks than he did during the Phazon Mines and I had pretty much all of the same complaints. Combat never feels satisfying or enjoyable for me in this game. It just felt like a heavily recurring chore that never stopped being annoying.

    I was someone who enjoyed Metroid Dread more than Metroid Prime Remastered. Even though I played the original back in the day, I didn't have too much nostalgia around it. I just appreciated Dread's combat, the chase from the EMMI's, and the other boss battles (other than the final boss which was just too long and complicated for me) far more. Thanks for your honest review.

    I think something you may have overlooked is your ability to dash left and right while you're locked onto an enemy. This mechinic is subtly genius as the combat turns into a test of reaction and forethought, requiring you to anticipate how your movements will force enemies to reposition while being ready to evade their attacks just like in the old 2D games, only now in a 3D space. I would encourage you to give the game a second shot with the lock-on dash in mind. It's a real gem of a challenge. Also to note, there are some fun combinations to be had with different beams and abilities, such as the icebeam to freeze an enemy before shattering them with a missle. Hope this helps.

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  Рік тому +1

      Hey thanks for the comment! I did use the dash, though not as responsively as you've described, and for sure didn't do toooooo much experimenting with the beams and missiles. Maybe I should give it another shot with that in mind and be slightly more focused on those aspects.

    I just finished playing it, I actually didn't finish i just beat the omega pirate and stopped so I'm super close to the end anyway but couldn't bring myself to play anymore. The graphics are incredible. That's about where my praise ends. After going through the same room a million times and all the enemies just keep respawning even if you just went through a minute earlier gets so tiring.
    Combat just wasn't fun. Not enough variety. Yeah you can dash and use different beams, but it's clunky and slow paced. First person could have been handled better.
    The platforming is also clunky and just bad. It's not fast or smooth enough. It's cool going through a place for the first time but after that first time, the next 80 times are a slog.
    And because there's basically no more exploring where I'm at I just can't bring myself to go back and get the last 2 artifacts. It's too boring and clunky.

  • @MechanicalRabbits
    @MechanicalRabbits 7 місяців тому +2

    I'm glad I'm not alone in this. I've spent all my life hearing about how great this game was, and now that I've finally gotten into it it's disappointing me a lot so far. I'm sorry for the people who love it but it's aged like milk. The 2d metroid games have some of the best controls ever, particularly Super Metroid. Samus is always really fun to move around, and you felt in control of every move and felt super agile. There's none of that in this one, it feels frustratingly clunky, moving around isn't fun (which makes exploration feel like a chore, something that should never happen on a Metroid game) and fighting enemies feels janky too, making me feel annoyed everytime one of them appears. I played Prime Hunters a lot as a child and I remember the combat feeling a lot more responsive on there, and we're talking about an FPS for the fucking nintendo DS. Having released at a time when Halo was already 3 years old, this game had no excuse controlling the way it did.

  • @samus1003
    @samus1003 Рік тому +1

    I agree with some points here, but I absolutely disagree with the combat criticism. The strafing is hinted at in the first boss battle. There is absolutely benefits to charged shots, such as paralysis, freezing, and burning enemies that don't happen with regular shots. Changing between missles and beam takes too long because of how it's used, for example, if you take a charged shot and follow it up with a missle, it fires it off quickly.

  • @Trazynn
    @Trazynn Рік тому +2

    I disagree but I can entirely see where you're coming from. The 'metroidvania' genre is basically focussed on heightening that power fantasy that metroid and castlevania could potentially amount to, but never truly scratch that itch. So these games kept upgrading the quality of life, the user experience and the spectacle which means going back to the simpler, slower gameplay of their namesakes can lead to disappointment.

    Okay, it's clear the controls really didn't click with you.
    Am trying to see how you found the combat - I always found that you had plenty of mobility and found it fairly easy to avoid 'most' enemy shots. It's optimised for strafing and shooting - never found it clunky myself, but agree is not remotely like ant other fps games

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  Рік тому

      The updated controls were fine enough just didn't think they integrated the gun swapping well. Movement felt mobile but still also felt like I couldn't avoid damage and most combat arenas were either large empty rooms or narrow halls. Maybe I just went in expecting different combat than I got

    • @AFriendRemembers
      @AFriendRemembers Рік тому +2

      @@capn_sarge I just, I get the complaint, but when you describe the combat as clunky and say you struggled to avoid shots it suggests the game struggled to convey to you the 'flow' it wants you to play it.
      I last played on the wii, where the ability ti point and shot is game changing, but even on the GC original it had a sense of fast and fluid sideways strafing where I could easily sidestep 90% of enemy attacks. The gun changing and charge shots being slow felt deliberately- because your attention should be on moving and avoiding damage whilst you charge up.
      I've not touched the remaster so don't know how the new controls suit - but watching the footage and hearing you talk just didn't coney the sense that you thought there was any momentum to the combat there - which yeah, would sort of ruin the experience for me.

    So this is actually my favorite game of all time but I do not believe that your review is invalid. I don't think the game is at fault, it's the critics, because they over praised the remaster. Let me explain.
    Back in 2002 this game was deservedly a 10/10, and because they nailed at the atmosphere and exploration so much, it always will be a 10/10 for me. But in order to meaningfully maintain a 10/10 in today's standards (let's be honest), it would have needed to be a remake.
    But there's a problem. MPR didn't set out to be anything but a remaster of an old game. And yet it still got perfect scores all around. Unfortunately, this means it was over praised because of nostalgia. Which in turn means that new or newish players are set for disappointment because they are coming in with standards that the game isn't trying to meet.

Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask both have some pretty obtuse design decisions in them that have not aged well even though I’d still consider them 10/10s. I can see how people would feel the same way with Metroid Prime, since I also feel that way, as I don’t have nostalgia for the game and was really disappointed with my experience with the remaster.

    The older fans of this franchise complain about "hand holding" as they like to so burningly describe hint systems. Luckily for them, Prime 1 can have its hint system turned off, but it can't be turned off in Metroid Fusion nor Metroid: Zero Mission. I'm not sure about newer games.
    I haven't played much of the modern Metroid games nor the Prime 1 remaster, just to be clear, but I do own Metroid Dread. I've been hesitant to play it because I'm expecting E.M.M.Is to be more annoying to avoid than the SA-X was in Fusion (partly because of the surprisingly brutal instadeath cutscenes)... and I kind of suck at a lot of different games it seems and I never get much better at them, so if Dread is harder than Fusion and Zero Mission, I will likely fail angrily and stop playing altogether, and yes, I admit that this anger probably hinders me from playing games better, but it's unavoidable. I also don't play Hard difficulty on Zero Mission because imo it's ridiculous like some kind of weird, hardcore rom hack that masochist content creators play as "challenges".
    I may sound like I'm overexplaining, but I just want to avoid answering questions about my comment.

    Well, this is a remaster not a remake. About the controller scheme. Back then the FPS controlls where not as stadarized as they are today so there was a lot of experimentation. Heck, the whole game is experimentation and yet the devs achieved something outstanding at that time. The think about Metroid prime is that while you are in an FP perspective it is not an FPS it is an FPA(dventure) that's what the dev team meant to create.

    I can kind of identify with what you said about the controls and enemy encounters leading to cheap deaths, as that was my fate at first when I played this game too, and I'm an OG player of the Gamecube game. There are however things found through exploration that can make the experience easier, as others seem to have said. A lot of health and missiles combined with beam combos and power bombs can make enemies less of an issue in the late game, and it took me a while before I found out that the jump button allows you to dodge to the side while locked onto enemies and move more quickly while strafing... but still... a large group of space pirates and especially those with specific beam shielding get rather annoying and difficult to deal with. Beam pirates gave me a few "Really??!" moments, and definitely when they even showed up as minions during the Omega Pirate boss battle.
    Now, I personally didn't mind backtracking and exploration back in the day, since the different worlds are so pretty and have nice music, and it was satisfying to go out and grab suit upgrades and hidden missile and power bomb expansions and energy tanks, but I don't know if I'd have the patience for it these days.

The Wii controls in the trilogy version are actually the best fps controls I've ever played. Quick, precise Motion aiming and shooting with the Wii remote while running and dodging with the nunchuck's analog stick just blended perfectly together! The world design leaves so much to be desired, I don’t like a lot of the world design choices such as elevators not connecting every area to each other and a lot of the pacing is DESTROYED by long tedious backtracking segments, exploration felt more like you were being tugged from one side of the world to the other by an elastic band that gave you indefinite whiplash, and yeah the boss fights are subpar to flat out bad. The combat is also not fleshed out at all, enemies can be fun but they end up being bullet sponges

    As a huge fan of the prime series, and as a result, this game, watching this pained me a little, but I do see some of your points. Yes, some of the enemies are pretty spongey and can get annoying to kill, but you shouldn't have to take so much damage, it's what jump strafing is for, which it seemed to somehow slip through your fingers in the beginning of the game. When you fight the parasite queen, you should get a prompt telling you how to do it, and in order to get the morph ball, you have to use it to kill the mini-boss to end the encounter, which you did do in some of the footage. When it comes to enemies that aren't the pirates in the phazon mines, there are a lot of different ways to dispatch them. To me, some of the fun of this game is finding out the best way to get rid of enemies and executing it each time I encounter them. When it comes to exploring, yes, the backtracking can get a little monotonous, but its one of those things where players who explored earlier would know there are other faster routes to get to places, which one of the core pieces of the Metroid franchise. Another thing, yes, it's and older game. It's not meant to hold your hand and guide you, giving you tutorials through menus or anything of the sort, and if a Metroid game does do that, it's minimal at best. Metroid does things best through subtext, and each battle the player gets into makes them stronger through strategy. Metroid has always been about discovery and challenge through many means, teaching the player and testing their skills afterwards. Nowadays, people who play games at my age are not as patient as those before me (I'm 18, never met a Metroid fan under the age of 20). I agree with the idea that the game is a little overrated, but it's definitely good nonetheless.

      I knew about and used the strafing but it never felt like it did much to evade enemy attacks. Maybe I was a little too "guns blazing" and needed to take a slower approach but I think the general tedium of some of the exploration and backtracking made me impatient. I do see what you're saying about the reward of exploration. And don't get me wrong I still enjoyed the game overall. Just didn't hit me as the 10/10 perfect masterpiece everyone else seems to say it is.

    I don't think that it's fair that you compare this old ass game to newer games of the genre, the game is a faithful remaster of a 20 year old game (hints why it's called a remaster and not a remake). and giving the game's story a 1/5 with zero context is the worst take, use the scan visor and all of the story is told though subtext instead of the game shoving it all in your face you can find out what happened to the world and it's inhabitants and what your end goal is. I can agree with the combat, it feels slow at times, but there are ways you shred through enemies and make the combat feel more fluid, like missile spamming, wave buster, and plasma beam charges. I don't know why but this reviews seems like you where looking for something to complain about because you didn't even mention the chozo artifact fetch quest which was the one justifiable gripe about the game, pretty mid review...
    Edit: keep up the good work tho!!!

      @capn_sarge  Рік тому

      Even as a remake, the game did just come out. And a lot of people are going to play it with no context to its original release. I think it's completely fair to say that it's lacking a lot of the innovation that the genre has gone through. I do see why the game's considered a classic, and I can imagine back on the GC that it was quite impressive. But that's not the context of the re-release.
      I admit I usually frame my reviews more in the "here's why you might not like a game" because I think that is what's valuable to someone who is looking for a review to help them make an informed purchase, but I don't purposefully bash games, and try to be honest about what I enjoyed/didn't enjoy.

    If you are giving the story a 1 out of 5, I can only assume you did not use the scan visor very often. I can't help but wonder if you know about the dash strafe? Thanks for your opinion though. IMO Metroid Prime is a masterpiece.

      I did use the scanner quite a bit! Just not really a fan of that medium of story telling, and didn't think the story being told was anything too amazing. Engaging with the narrative felt more like a chore, and the payoff of the narrative wasn't worth the effort to me.

    I'm glad Nintendo knew to price this at 40 bucks. I'd say 30 for it is fair, but I think all these remade games should be no more than 40. Its like selling a paint in the numbers drawing for an masterpiece original. Surprised at the stellar reviews though it looks very similar to how I remember it back in the day. For me, the metroidvania formula is perfect. It's top game design, specially the Metroid part of it. However, the Metroid series needs to evolve on its own path. With all the metroidvanias out there, it's easy to forget just how much of it came from Metroid, and for other titles it's easier to deviate and evolve the genre in different directions. Metroid can't go too further from itself because... It wouldn't be Metroid anymore.
    I never played the GameCube original, but the Wii remaster on Wii U back in 2016. It took me more than 60 hours to beat it, and I had never played a Metroid game before, or a metroidvania for that matter. The motion controls felt great and immersive but playing the Switch remaster really made me see that the game is meant to be played with the lock-on system.
    I highly disagree with most of your review. The only issue I rarely had was with the save system. It would be better if it had checkpoints before boss battles ala Metroid Dread. Beyond that, the game is as close to perfection as it can get. Great video anyway!

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  Рік тому +1

      I'm glad you love the game and series so much! And appreciate that you still enjoyed the video! You make an interesting point about Metroid needing to stay metroid, I've not thought of it that way but I do think I agree with you. Yeah the save system is archaic and made some of the deaths that already felt a little unfair to me feel extremely and unnecessarily punishing.

      But yeah, the saving system can drive anyone crazy when we're so used to frequent saving nowadays.
      I gotta add that, when I first played Prime I was new to gaming. I have some games under my belt now and appreciate it much more. For example, I remember seeing tons of people always praising games like BioShock for its world building and environmental narrative (there's a better term for that but can't remember) but playing Metroid Prime made me go... why is this game not praised as often as BioShock, when it did it earlier and, in my opinion, better?

    No offense dude. But your criticism about Metroid Prime is more towards your experience of other FPS games you played or lack of skills than the game itself. I'm not saying the game is perfect. Let's face it. No games are. But your issue towards this game comes more of your own taste. You didn't get to experience the game that was impactful for an reason or what the franchise or genre is all about. This game isn't like Halo or Call of Duty and I don't even care for those franchise cause I don't like FPS in general. But Metroid Prime plays differently than the other FPS games.

      Thanks for the comment, no offense taken! I know the game isn't trying to be the next Halo or CoD, but at the same time I can still have complaints about the combat and wish it was a little smoother and more in depth than it was. Especially since it is very present in the game and for me got in the way of the adventure and more "core" metroidvania elements I was hoping to enjoy.

Metroid was never always combat focus. And even than, I thought the combat in Metroid Prime 1 works fine.
