Penny and Koko: Reflections on Motherhood (2018)

- Penny has been like a mother to Koko, from the time she began caring for her as a baby gorilla, through years of communication-based research and relationship building, to the present, where Koko now exhibits many of the same maternal qualities to her kittens, great ape dolls and human caregivers.
There is so much to learn from Koko and other gorillas, as we begin to make basic (sign-language) communication skills accessible to all captive gorillas, and Koko extends her (motherly) love to the next generation.

I hadn't heard she'd died. I just looked it up. I loved that animal, and at least she made a good age.
raphael44ify she had more character than most humans... it's very sad isn't it , losing such a magnificent soul?
Oh, God, yes. I loved her for her kindness and gentleness. When I saw her with a cat, for example, how she'd kiss it and stroke it. And how she recognised people and grieved when they died. When she'd heard her cat died, she really became distraught.
RIP I was born the day after Koko (July 5, 1971) . I was hoping to get to visit her on our birthdays i keep crying every time I think of Koko. The World is a much sadder place with out her it .
My condolences. She would have made the most wonderful mother. Special thanks to Penny for all the years of care and love, and for sharing that love with us. She’ll never be forgotten.
What an incredible life. She was a daughter to a gorilla as well as a human, and a mother herself. May she rest in her comfortable hole.

Penny's relationship with Koko is one of a kind. She have so much patient in teaching her. I'm glad I was born in their lifetime to witness this.

I’m so sorry you were never able to gorilla, Koko and Penny! You deserved so much more.
I have always loved this gorilla. I gave my daughter the book, "Koko's Kitten" when she was young, and a few years ago, told my husband that the only thing I wanted for my Birthday was a piece of art by her. I believe communication between animals and humans is so important and is more possible than most people believe. I hope Penny and all her apprentices will continue the work that has been done up until now, and that Koko will continue to be an inspiration for all.
RIP Koko. Thank you for all the laughs! Now you and Robin Williams can play tickles together forever.

I've been crying all day. I can't believe Koko's gone. I know it's a million times harder for Penny and everyone at The Gorilla Foundation. Thank you for educating us and for sharing Koko's moments with us for so many years. Through her, our hearts were opened to how like us gorillas truly are. The only thing comforting me today is knowing that Koko will live on through your continued work. Her story has really only just begun.

KOKO May you find the freedom to be the gorilla that nature intended you to be. I never met you Koko but I LOVE YOU fireworks child. My tears can’t stop and you will forever hold a special place in my heart. To Penny and those who knew Koko and cared for her THANK YOU. I cannot think of the heartbreak you must be feeling. I am glad Koko died in her sleep and hopefully without pain. Penny your devotion to Koko you put your love for Koko above all else in your life. You didn’t walk away from Koko when she needed someone and you didn’t listen to those that thought Koko’s understanding of humans was a circus trick.... you fought for her rights and to give her a life that was better than most apes born into captivity. I am saddened that she never realized her dream of becoming a mother that she didn’t realize her potential as a gorilla with the rights that every wild ape should have. Please take my words to heart that KOKO WAS LUCKY TO HAVE KNOWN YOU MY DEAR. I know that your journey with apes has not changed and when your heart heals a bit that you will carry on the legacy Koko has thanks to you left. All the best and I love you Penny..... Dr.Penny and Koko make me want to be a wildlife biologist. I want to show everyone how intelligent animals truly are. I feel like many, including in the scientific community, don't truly understand animals and are quick to call animal behavior that is identical to humans, "anthropomorphizing". Emotions and certain behaviors must be universal and I think there is so much more we can learn

...heartbreaking to watch this. I grew up watching Koko grow up. We celebrated a common birthday. I had always hoped she’d get to have a baby to teach sign to. Oh Penny, your heart must be breaking because Koko was your first baby girl gorilla. She really was your daughter...I’ve lost a daughter, too. Isn’t it a strange universe? May you find solace in knowing so many of us loved Koko & it was because of you. You brought her into our lives, showed the world that gorillas have empathy & we learned so much. Koko really was a good gorilla. And Penny? You were a good Mom to her. You changed her life & ours. Thank you for that gift.
