9:00 Another detail about Slippy being smashed by the boss robot in Sector X. If Slippy was out of combat the level before, then this scenario could not happen, right? Well, no, the game knows that Slippy MUST be present during the boss, so he comes back just as the boss is spawned, with special lines of dialogue between Slippy and Fox.
The Sector Y thing is cool in the lore because if you shoot 100 ships or more that’s basically preserving the Cornerian fleet behind you, so they can go reinforce Katina and you can go investigate the bio weapon on Aqas. If you don’t shoot enough ships the fleet gets tore up and have to lick their wounds while Team Starfox goes to help Katina.
It's interesting the little story you get based on what you succeed and fail at. Hard Mode: Sneaking though backlines via waste disposal to meet the main enemy force undetected. Enemy Blind fires missiles as a last-ditch attempt since you evaded their satellite network. Andross has an idea you're coming but doesn't have enough time to set up his defenses. Medium Mode: Assist 2nd wave by preserving their academy and push through by forcing a grounding of the enemy fleet via destroying their supply lines in a surprise attack. Easy Mode: Fighting though the enemy forward bases and pushing the heavily defended manufacturing worlds Andross knows you're coming and leads you into a trap with a decoy.
I remember the first time I ever made it to Sector Z as a kid of course I didn't make it out unscathed, but I remember how cool it was to see the Great Fox damaged in the final credits scene.
There is also the alternate instant-death ending of the Venom 1 boss; if you take too long to destroy the golem, it spits a series of solid walls into your way that are enough to kill you. If you survive with cheats, you continue flying after the golem through a black void.
My favorite detail is the alternate dialogue you get at the end of certain missions depending on the health gauges of your team... My favorite is falco's low-health line on Solar. "Look at my ship... Does it LOOK okay to you?" cracks me up
You can shoot the ships, you can shoot Bill, you can crash into the ships, your teammates can shoot the ships, all that matters is that you don’t shoot down the ships, as long as you’re the one who didn’t down any allied ships then you will get the best ending on Katina, I can tell you that from experience
It was a little euphoric and weird seeing it, especially since it’s an insta kill, plus all the rarely seen textures and stage obstacles. This is also the only one I haven’t seen from failing as a kid, as I usually died, barely defeated it and after learning the insta kill ALWAYS hit the switch
I can't quite describe it, but games like Star Fox and Perfect Dark are so cool in how they've got a bunch of little things that change depending on what you do in previous levels. I really enjoyed finding them all in Star Fox. And I love because they're live cutscenes, they can be customized, such as when you have a damaged Great Fox or whatnot.
Man, this video deserves to blow up. People who chronicle games in depth like this are the best kind of content creators. It's easy to just do the same old same old. But showing us this much is awesome.
Fun fact, there's a moment where Slippy appears in Sector X before the boss fight, I find it so funny that you can kill him and he comes back with his ship completly repaired, not only that, you can kill the boss and just get Slippy a full heal, you can get the medal even if Slippy died earlier.
I agree with you. I have gotten 14 medals out of 15 missions. The only mission I did not get a medal is in Sector Z, which is the hardest for the entire game, even it is only 100 points. I did managed to get medals in hard missions, such as Katina, Area 6, Venom II, Titania, Bolse, and even Solar before my N64 is broken many years ago. In order to get a medal on each mission, must score a certain amount of points and must have all 3 wingmen alive when finishing the mission. Corneria: 150 points. Meteo: 200 points. Fortuna: 50 points. Sector X: 150 points. Titania: 150 points. Bolse: 150 points. Katina: 150 points. Solar: 100 points. Macbeth: 150 points. Sector Y: 150 points. Aquas: 150 points. Zoness: 250 points. Sector Z: 100 points. Area 6: 300 points. & Venom: 200 points.
You can shoot a friendly fighter or run into one on Katrina as long as you don't actually cause it to go down. When I successfully got that special dialogue I shot a fighter a bit. It's funny how I've just discovered that and I've been playing Star Fox 64 since it was new. UA-cam has changed gaming a lot.
Slippy Path: Lots of enemies, heavy score increase, don't get shot down Peppy Path: Lots of mechanical review, remember how to barrel roll, somersault, etc Falco Path: Mix of both, prove you're an ace pilot
Pretty sure I've never seen a couple of those Venom paths, especially the one with the electric ... (opens new tab, Googles "what do you call a horizontal pillar") ... beams I guess? Yeah, anyway. I've definitely seen Bill endings with more than the "usual" number of wingmen, but never saw the best possible dialogue, so there must be different variations of how many wingmen show up in that stage clear screen. Or it might just be literally however many of them survived.
My favourite game of all time, been playing it since the 90s, thought I knew and unlocked everything, hard mode, that bazooka mode for VS... ... I've never seen the "no friendly fire" ending of Katina. I'm shocked and ashamed.
It was a really cool touch how if you didn’t have slippy during any boss, no boss health bar. Subtle gameplay changes that made the game feel more real
Slippy's is the most tangible loss. If Peppy's out, you won't get hints to do somersaults to get items or avoid traps. And if Falco's not around, he won't tell you about secret routes. In fact it's straight impossible to do the Corneria secret route without him.
I'm 99% sure if you kill the whole star wolf squad at the first place, then warp to the hard mode. The hard venom has like half mech versions of the star wolf squad. I distinctly remember that they reminded me of mech frieza. And I think pigma says they got new ships too.
There's only 2 Wolfen ships: The standard weak one and the Venom Hard Route ones, mark I and II respectively. Regardless of whether you encountered them before Venom or not, they are in the Wolfen II, and Leon always says, "Let's see how you handle our new ships." Pigma, when shot but not killed says, "You can't beat me! I've got a better ship!"
@@supersasukemaniac I noticed that too. I wonder if he rejected the cybernetics to remain more natural or that he didn't require then because he just wasn't that injured in the battle. I'd like to think it was the first.
Star Fox was a blast. Fun memory about Sector X. My brothers and I always thought letting Slippy crash into Titania was a bad thing, so we'd always reset the 64 if we couldn't save him.
Another thing I like about the Sector Y endings is that you will notice that if you fail to get 100 hits, the Cornerian fleet is not hovering in the background on the aftermath screen like they are when you get the path to Aquas.
If you lose all your team mates in the starwolf battle in venom and still win Fox says something different than the “I’ll go alone from here” I just found this out while playing a couple months ago and was just in awe on how much detail in each scenario they put into this game.
I Can't Help But appreciate your attention to detail and your love of Star Fox I actually found out something new today and I thought I'd actually fully played this game
I definitely hit all of the bad endings when I first played! The allure of "what's in the other levels?" kept me going and it was super satisfying to finally get all the medals and beat red path on expert. Incredible game with the some of the best voice lines, great mechanics, reasonable skill curve but very high ceiling.
22:10 I've triggered "I got the last one" from Peppy and Slippy before, also on Fortuna. Just get the last Star Wolf member remaining (not Wolf) really weak and watch your teammate eventually shoot him down.
I actually really love this, it's very completionist, and that's something I do wherever possible in games. :) I think you're totally awesome and I always look forward to your videos, even if it's a game that I've either sucked majorly at and never finished, or never got to play! You make my day, Bill!
This is the first game I got 100% on. LOVE this game. Just got the switch and started up again. I'm going hard mode and gosh darn, it's WAY easier on the 64 controller.
Taking Kitana to Sector X will allow Bill to help open the gates and then the warp helps you get the medal on Sector Z because Katt isn't there to destroy the missles with the last shot and take away your points.
I always go to that warp in sector X, because I don't tend to care about points, and just like to take the path that takes me to all three of the big letters.
IIRC with sector z bad ending, great fox will be missing whichever damaged wing foe the remainder of that play through. So the ending cutscenes / credits, wing damage shows. Which is so cool!
You say that, but without being a speedrunner you can 100% this game in about 6-8 hours :P You only need 6 goes through to get every medal, expert included. Katina, Aquas, Solar, Titania, Sector Z and Area 6), but that's not more content you're getting, that's the same content
My friend, this video gave me goosebumps. I remember 1997, this was my very first N64 game. Once reached Fortuna I didn't know what to do, I didn't know english, I'm italian and I was 8, and suddenly Star Wolf appeared. The hell are these guys. They were so hard to beat, so fast and every time I let them win and the bomb explode, every time I was so sad. Same thing the first few times I reached Katina, that UFO destroying everything, damn kid me, I always felt as a failure. Then one day, maybe a year later or so I finally made to Venom, hard mode, killed that monkey brain and then... "You've become so strong Fox.". First game ever that made me cry. So magnificent, so special, so beautiful.
Epic personality, enthusiasm & passion. It's refreshing For me to see something fresh like this. You're having a f****** blast.. without giving it too much thought I don't think i know any gaming channels I can top this commentary.
Oh SHIT! I remember getting that katina ending unintentionally. I assumed all those fighters I saw was because those were the ones that remained after I killed the enemies and kept my friendly fire casualties to a minimum. Whenever I tried to reattempt the ending I never got anywhere as many friendly fighters in the end scene. I assumed the one time I got the best ending was a glitch in my game or a false memory because I was young.
Oh, when I first started playing this game as a kid, I absolutely sucked at it. As in, I got a game over at Meteo the first time I played. But I slowly got better and better, getting further and further on the easy path (and always failing at Fortuna, then not beating the Sector X boss before Slippy got slapped) until I finally beat it on easy. Then rinse and repeat for the other paths. Ultimately I eventually was able to get all gold medals on both difficulties of course. But in a way, I guess this is the game that I felt like improved the most over any other game.
Damn this brings back so many memories. When I found out that there was alternative paths and endings I became obsessed with finding them all. You showed me a few ive never seen.
Good video! My highscore days are over, I am playing this game purely for fun nowadays and I always loved the Katina mission because it is unique that there are atleast some friendlies fighting together with you (thats only seconded by the Great Fox assisting you in Area 6 and some big friendly ships in Sector Y, but those are only there to get blasted to pieces), but they are just as vulnerable as the enemies are. So when the mothership starts deploying it feels good to get 3 enemies off from one of Bill's guys. You also should not just go in guns blazing, but choose your targets carefully. I managed to get the secret dialogue several times and it is a good feeling :)
i always used to think of this game as a underline horror game in the franchise as a kid. idk if it was the graphics, the liminal worlds, the eerie hidden warpzones (the sector X warp light in the background made me always think it was the center of the X nebula) and paths, or the false ending on the easy route, but it always wigged me out playing alone at times.
I lost the ending AS BILL SAID “YEEHAW YOU DID IT” once. One of my own crashed into me, took out my wing, and exploded. It somehow counted it as I shot it down. I had never been madder at an NPC in my life up to that point.
13:34 I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but during the credits when the greatfox if appearing over the horizon you will see it still has battle damage.
I actually tried to cheese the Sector X Boss by shooting down Slippy in Katina so he wouldn't appear for the next level, but he still shows up just before the fight!
As a child, it was so hard beating Star Wolf on Fortuna. After mastering the easy route, getting 100 hits in sector Y was hard for me. I was always excited when I got to go to Aquas! That meant I could see Zoness! I also remember how hard Area 6 was. As an adult, all of those are easy, but for an 8 year old, they are difficult. My usual route was the middle normal route followed by hard after Macbeth.
A curious thing about failing Fortuna with only one Star Wolf member remaining is that if you go to Bolse, any remaining Star Wolf members will come for you. One playthrough I did as a kid where I failed Fortuna with only Pigma left, Pigma showed up by himself in Bolse and me and my cousin were laughing our asses off at that.
I remember back in the day I saw my older brother get to Aquas once and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but I could never get to it. It was only years later that I learned about the 100 hits requirement. Not knowing stuff like that always gave games this like mystical feeling for me. Another example was back in Spiderman 1 I think, there’s a part where you fight the Green Goblin and my brother told me that if I could land on his glider I could fly it. I spent SO MUCH time trying to do that shit lmao
I like to do the hard path, though I am starting to appreciate the true path a bit, sometimes I like to play through the true path unskipped, the true path is Corneria, Meteo, Fichina, Solar, Macbeth, Area 6, & Venom.
I do like how the deviating paths towards Area 6 and Bolse make sense in terms of logistics and strategy. In Sector Z, if you fail to protect the Great Fox, it can't provide supporting fire, making Area 6, lore wise, a suicide mission. So instead spearing through the Venom fleet at Area 6, they have to go around to drop Venom's satellite defenses on Bolse. This however, means you have to take the longway to Andross' base. Whereas WITH the Great Fox, you're capable of mowing down the Venom fleet, making a direct assault feasible. Meanwhile, after Sector X, should you not rescue Slippy, it veers you off course. So while having to change course to Titania, that brings the Great Fox too far from the Venom fleet to attack them directly, so back to Bolse to shut down the satellite defenses and create a hole to slip through the orbital defenses, but then you're at the mercy of Venom's ground forces. But if you save Slippy and head to MacBeth, you have the opportunity to hit Venom's forces where it hurts most: their supply chain. If you just blow up the train, it doesn't help enough logistically for Fox to chance a direct offensive on Area 6, but if you blow up the supply depot entirely, you launch a haymaker right at Venom's forces, which will now be vulnerable without the support of their supply chain, making an offensive on Area 6 a much more feasible strategy.
The Katina “Im glad you’re on our side Fox”. I’ve personally heard it twice. Once by accident, once purpose after trying multiple times on a playthrough. It’s actually pretty tough get that sound byte.
Wtf? I got the Katina ending once as a kid because I remember I used to love that level and played the heck out of it. I remember I used to play it in so many different ways just for the fun of it, but it never crossed my mind that this was a secret ending at all!
Some alternate pathways: Aquas -> Zoness with 110 hits or over, if below 110 go to solar instead Solar -> Sector Z if above 75% health at the end, if below 75% go to Macbeth Titania -> Area 6 (warp)
I remember when I was a kid and I was HORRIBLE at this game. All the fail endings made me kinda nostalgic. I actually became a pretty good player but this brought me back to my childhood ❤😂
If you enjoyed this, check out my score run of the game here, as well as my other let's plays! Thanks: ua-cam.com/video/3Xe5kZ-3LIY/v-deo.html

One other little "secret" I remember is if you fail sector Z, Great Fox has the missile damage in the credits scene.

25:50 "Knock it off, Fox"
Epic personality, enthusiasm & passion. It's refreshing For me to see something fresh like this. You're having a f****** blast.. without giving it too much thought I don't think i know any gaming channels I can top this commentary.
Fun fact: Venom Easy Mode in Star Fox 64 is mostly Venom Hard Mode from Star Fox SNES.
22:11 Wow that's a rare quote
Very cool video. I missed the bad endings. It’s true what you said about nobody gets them anymore once they master the game.
I’ve never seen that best ending on Katina. Awesome man
Thank you for that little trip to back in the day. What good times it was.
"You suck, why aren't we going to aquas?" 😂
Only thing in this video I didn't get myself before was the MacBeth Failure instakill. Always love finding new things.
I still think it's funny how Wolf O'Donnel goes from British to Texan between games.
Damn this brings back so many memories. When I found out that there was alternative paths and endings I became obsessed with finding them all. You showed me a few ive never seen.
It’s been so long since I played this game that’s its new to me now 😂💯
Star Wolf appears on Bolse if you either fail to take them all down on Fichina or skip Fichina entirely
19:39
Katt’s dialogue remains the same even if Falco is KO’d.
When you're doing each individual medal, it's better to arrive to Sector Z via Sector Y warp, that way you won't have Kat stealing your missil kills
Happy 30th Anniversary, Crewmates
i always used to think of this game as a underline horror game in the franchise as a kid.
idk if it was the graphics, the liminal worlds, the eerie hidden warpzones (the sector X warp light in the background made me always think it was the center of the X nebula) and paths, or the false ending on the easy route, but it always wigged me out playing alone at times.
Randomly popped up in recommended and i’m glad it did. Excellent video on a beloved childhood game. Subscribed
“Cocky little freaks!”
I lost the ending AS BILL SAID “YEEHAW YOU DID IT” once. One of my own crashed into me, took out my wing, and exploded. It somehow counted it as I shot it down.
I had never been madder at an NPC in my life up to that point.
“No it ain’t, Slippy…they got big pink butts” 🤣🤣🤣
I got this ending a couple times and never understood why it happened. Thanks for showing this!
In Sector X you can go to Macbeth if you defeat the secret weapon before it takes out Slippy.
Just released on the switch soo excited! With save states! Damn this game was soo fun
19:27 Been playing this game all my life and I've somehow never encountered Katt on Macbeth
I knew about it, but i rarely do it because if i go to Zonus, its because im doing an all hard-level run
I didn't even know about getting instakilled if you take too long with the train, and I know a lot about this game.
I didn't know that either. I know there is also a bad end on Bolse if you take too long to take out the tower.
I can't believe Falco shot Leon Nice job falco
18:59-19:00 Yeah
Take it easy fox
Don’t let us down..
If you're worried about not shooting an ally during Katina, just use lock on. You'll never fire on an ally that way.
I thought I wouldn't learn anything new, but I had no idea you could auto-fail Macbeth if you took long enough
I remember doing these when I was a kid. Awesome stuff.
All these years playing this game & never knew about that secret bill voice in the hood ending! So many ships!
I used to do Fortuna > Sector X > Sector Z > Venom II to get a canon run of fighting Star Wolf twice
I like to do the hard path, though I am starting to appreciate the true path a bit, sometimes I like to play through the true path unskipped, the true path is Corneria, Meteo, Fichina, Solar, Macbeth, Area 6, & Venom.
The Star Wolf ranks in descending order are Wolf, Leon, Pigma, and Andrew. That will determine who speaks based on who’s left.
3:14 bold of you assume I'm good at this game
The Katina “Im glad you’re on our side Fox”. I’ve personally heard it twice. Once by accident, once purpose after trying multiple times on a playthrough. It’s actually pretty tough get that sound byte.
Wtf? I got the Katina ending once as a kid because I remember I used to love that level and played the heck out of it. I remember I used to play it in so many different ways just for the fun of it, but it never crossed my mind that this was a secret ending at all!
Some alternate pathways:
Aquas -> Zoness with 110 hits or over, if below 110 go to solar instead
Solar -> Sector Z if above 75% health at the end, if below 75% go to Macbeth
Titania -> Area 6 (warp)
@@Varrxion yeah these are just fan made.
@@s0larisyt these ideas do be cool
Also ik im late
15:00 I have been playing Star Fox 64 since 1997 and I've always preferred the bottom path to the top path
That mission with Bill was so awesome i remember the first time i played it
I remember when I was a kid and I was HORRIBLE at this game. All the fail endings made me kinda nostalgic. I actually became a pretty good player but this brought me back to my childhood ❤😂
I like how the team is mostly business, or at least Fox. They're concerned about money and they stick to their own persnal politics.
