The Algerian mandole (mandole Algérienne) it is mainly used in Chaabi music, equipped with a long neck with 8 strings and sometimes 10 or 12 strings ( mandol-guitar). The strings vibrating length = 25,59 inches (650mm). Music chaabi was born in Algiers at the beginning of the twentieth century.
This model has a sort of a smaller inner body for better resonance. The side tiny cutaways act as sound holes for the bigger body and the three other rounded sound holes are for the smaller inner body. There are other more traditional Mandoles with one cavity (same as a guitar) and one sound hole.
I honestly don't know - I no longer have it, sold to someone who did know what to do with it, I used DADAD treating it a bit like a five-course saz, and the strings seemed well gauged for that or perhaps an open C tuning. I don't have many unusual instruments left now.

If I had known this was a double skinned instrument and probably not made in China like the Ozark imported versions sold in Britain in the past as a 'bouzouki', first of all I would have kept it, secondly never sold for the low price I did, and thirdly not called it a Chinese-Algerian mandole (though the name manol or mandole came with some authority, kwitra sounds as likely, cognate to cetra, chitarra, cittern, citra and of course guitar).
there are two Algerian version of the mondole .the one you have is the kabyle version with 10 strings, the other version called "Algerois " or Algiers mondole has 8 strings
I have exactly similar one .. with golden stamped marke on the top HOXTON SOUND i couldnt find a another one online I dont think this is algerian instrument , i believe is turkish Thanks for sharing
dear, after some researches, i found that there more than one algerian mandole, globally on two main uses, chaabi (algiers popular music), generally 8 strings thin body and handle, and kabyl mandole, 10 strings more, contains generally the 1/4 note bigger body and handle, exists also on cross strings, the one you have looks like a kabyle one witjout 1/4 note.
This one may now have been Chinese despite my title - it could even have been Algerian made. No visible make or luthier or model. However a similar instrument was sold as Ozark in the UK for some time with a diamond-shaped sound hole. I can't find it anywhere now.
@@elhadisellam2577 I think you are right, it's just that all these in he UK have been Blue Moon or Ozark brands made in China in the past, and this was sold to me for less than one of those. I regret I sold it without realising what it was, a double-chambered (body inside the body) mandol and as you say, probably a genuine Algerian original. My loss...
Never seen for sale recently. I know that Scayles Music in Edinburgh stocked the Blue Moon branded version with a diamond shaped sound hole, which they labelled as a 'large body bouzouki', for many years. Hobgoblin sell a version with an oval sound hole. I should not have sold mine, I did not realise it had the second sound box inside the outer shell and was really a good instrument - I think this model is just a single sound chamber with no inner wall - hobgoblin.com/gr33005-blue-moon-bb-12-irish-bouzouki-pear-shape-body
@@daviddkilpatrick Thanks, I've seen one of these in Leeds city centre, but I was really impressed with the one you have on that video and I hope I can find one. Thanks anyway Dave
We found it has a complete inner body - double rib design. I bought it from a US vendor on eBay, and sold it to an Edinburgh musician with a better (proper) use for this rather than my use as a kind of large body bouzouki-cittern.
Man whta is algerian, it mens algerian not north african, because Chaabi was from algeria otherways is only lies. Algerian was well known of mandoline, music school of Sanaa of Algiers and old musicians like Mohamed Bendabbah and his famous song Koum Tara and many many others from centuries.

the cut-aways are there to deaden the sound so it won't sound so crisp to match the singing voice
I like it!
