Gday Ade, I start a shelf of shame with all the parts I messed up, I soon took it done, it was getting to embarrassing to look at😂, great job mate, cheers
Nice work Ade, and a mistake sorted perfectly. A useful tip on turning the spindle by hand to single point cut. I enjoy you channel. Thank you. Cheers Nobby
Beautiful chuck deserves better. If you look at the rear of the chuck internal thread there is an unthreaded portion. This is the register for the spindle. Similar setup to a threaded lathe spindle. The thread is only there to pull it over the internal register and back face of the chuck. The thread is simply floating.
at 15.15 into the video I mention this very fact and turn a 2mm long portion to pick up on the register as you said .the thread on the first one was so far out that the register could not do its job . I am very happy with the second one with 0.02mm runout . Thanks for your input and valid point . Cheers Ade.
Hey Ade, just got to your film and it was great. Kudos to you for leaving the mistake in. The first arbour looked like I had made it! I thoroughly approve of using the winding handle for single point threading. I sometimes do that on my lathe. The end result was a good one. Shame about the die, it might have worked, just a combination of things that all combined to prevent it. Look forward to your next film. Don't worry about being away, it's the quality not the quantity.
Hi Ade, you've clearly got more faith in your 3 jaw chuck than I would have. Collet chuck for me. With a bit of thought (albeit more tricky) you could have done it in a single chucking and kept everything concentric. Good work and thanks for sharing your error.
That's a nice low runout. The thing about shortcuts is that if they work most of the time, you gain in the long term, even if a few times you have to redo things... ;)
Hi Ade. Sound and vision all ok here. For me, the time and effort of setting up the gears, would have tempted me to use a die. But with one that size, I’d find it very easy to get it misaligned. Mostly I live and learn, but then I forget, reckon it has something to do with age. 🤔 Cheers Noel
After messing so many things up, I always single point threads now and finish with a die, if I have 1!, if not , mess on hand finishing, it takes a big man to admit making mistakes Ade.
Sound is fine, video seems to be buffering in segments. 2nd time lucky, no problem Ade, always the difficult bit gripping with enough force, but non-marking?. I think even with a die holder, the torque wouod betoo high. Thanks for sharing
At risk of trying to teach his grandmother how to suck eggs, here goes. On the drill chuck arbor registration of the chuck should be against the machined face at the end of the screwed spindle. The screwed part is only a fastener and only requires to assemble into the chuck. There is no requirement for a close fitting thread. If you split the die with an angle grinder so that it can be compressed to cut a slightly smaller diameter and looser thread then maybe the scrapped arbor could be made to run truer. As ever, enjoyed the video.
Hi and just a quick comment having done a few of these types of chucks myself unless you are intent on running the chuck clockwise all the time you shouldn't need to use locktite on the thread as all the threaded chucks have a left hand thread usually 6mm drilled into the end of the half inch threaded part to stop the chuck from unscrewing itself when used in reverse which is normally an M6 left handed countersink screw
We've all done it Ade! As you know, it's not about how you fall over, but how you get back up again that's important, looks like you got up well with mark 2👍. Cheers Jon

That little chuck should come in handy Ade. Great result in the end.
Steve.
Good to see you Ade.

Good result Ade. Yep shortcut got me only this week, not often but soooo annoying.

How ya going, I see a lot of youtubers not using the register as intended relying purely on the concentricity of the thread

Well done Ade, good honest video , we all get caught with the shortcuts so happy to have you in the club😊
Hi ade just watched your video sound now working. Thanks for showing the mistake we all make them kind regards
Great job! I was just asking myself when you were going to post a new video, at least it was salvageable.
Good recovering, Ade! 👍
Thanks 👍
Good to see Ade back 👍. Every Machinist should have a wailling wall to display their sins.

Nice to see you having fun.
I could do with the sound level up a bit. The adverts are deafening 😮
The sound didn't work on my phone, restarted it, works now.
Sound working my end
