This works perfectly, I've run home folders (actually the /Users folder) from external drives with many versions of MacOS through both MacOS updates and upgrades and have never experienced an issue. It has just gotten better and better over time as external storage interface options have become faster and more reliable. The only things I might suggest: -Put a Users folder on the external drive and then put each of the named home folders inside that Users folders. -When copying a home folder from one volume to another, don't copy the contents as seen in the Finder. Copy the entire folder because there can be and almost always are "hidden" items inside that folder. In most cases those "hidden" items don't matter but in some rare cases they do. You can also choose to show hidden items in the Finder by using the default keyboard combination SHIFT-COMMAND-. (that's the period symbol) to toggle the visibility of hidden items. But it's really better to copy the entire folder by drag-and-dropping the home folder from the source /Users folder to the destination volume's /Users folder rather than copying the individual contents of a home folder.
Yes I show this in my past couple of videos to copy the whole Home folder. Nice idea to put a Users folder on the external and put the named users in it, nice tip. Keeps it more organized and like it would be on the internal drive. Maybe that might be a fix for Spotlight indexing the external users icloud drive? I will try it. thanks
@@MacSoundSolutions its a good idea to add this 'Users folder on the external and put the named users in it' into your next video how to do it right, thanks in advance.
Yep, if Apple supports it, there's no reason why you can't update. I think people haven't been using Apple as long enough to know how things work but it's good that you show these videos because people need to be educated on macOS. This helps a lot and helps you manage storage and other issues that might come up keep it up.
While you are dealing with downloads, you are also dealing with the nature of SSDs. They start out storing data really quickly, then slow down. And this is the way SSDs work. And it does not matter whether or not you are using an internal or external SSD. Once you fill up their RAM cache, the download slows.
Superb. If I already have myself set up as a user on my Mac Mini, can I set up a new User, and have the the home folder on an external, but have it be the same Apple ID? 🤔 Rather than haveing to start from scratch again (which I’m ok to do if I need to)
Hi Lance. When trying to copy to external drive. Buy some reason I started to see that message pop up-"The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
Honestly the beer and Google played tricks on my brain I swear I set the video to unlisted but somehow it went public, I was laughing so hard making it and could not stop burping due to the beer pizza combo.

Thnx for all your work and time! Got my home folder on extern thanks to you, and update to 15.2 was smooth!
Lance…that was a VERY helpful and funny video….next time leave the burps in! 👍🏼😀
All I know is I’ve got a mini and have Det up per your videos and everything has been working great. Keep up the great job.

I appreciate you being open about that. Thank you for you videos. I am a relatively new subscriber. Thanks for the content.

No problem 🍻, Thank you for the video.
Haha, your videos are so great and helpful 🙏🥰, now im thinking of getting a cold one to 😉
Best regards from Sweden 😊
I bet there’ll be a 15.2.1, so I’ll hold off for a bit. Usually XX.X.0 updates bring some annoying bugs so I generally skip them.
I’ve got to confess, I’ve had a couple (or two) beers and haven’t intended to watch UA-cam videos tonight.
no not strange at all, if you have no free ram the installer needs to use Swap for processing
Except it was not using swap memory, had several gigs available.
It worked fine for me (but I didn't try after having 2 beers).
🙃

Getting the same error, currently on 15.2. Not sure if that has anything to do with it
Thank you. Please keep us posted!!
