A1 owner here. It’s an incredible instrument that continues to make excellent photos. But it lacks four important features for me: comfortable grip, 360 screen, 8 stops of IBIS, and pre-capture. Three of them prevent me from getting all the shots I want (particularly pre-capture). I bought it knowing I was “renting” it for its depreciated value until the II came out. Now that the A1 II is coming with all the features I need, I plan to upgrade. I personally don’t understand what 99% of photographers would do with a 50MP global shutter that is different from what they do today. Some forum people literally ask if the A1II would be good for street photography. I think questions like that belie people’s hope that expensive gear makes better photos, which is a shopper’s attitude, not a photographer’s 😊.
Would that many commercial/portrait shooters use unlimited sync speed? Do that many sports/action shooters print 10’ wall hangs that are viewed from 24” distance? Perhaps I’m ignorant here, but would wedding photographers make better photos with 1/8000th sync?
IMO, the A1II is a significant upgrade. For people who were on the fence about the A1I, the A1II should get them off the fence. I’m glad Sony shored up the A1’s shortcomings instead of squeezing in hype features .
I think you are right: The value of the A1II is being understated.
8 stops of ibis is a damn lie. Sony has the worst ibis.
@ I should have stated this as “better IBIS.” I agree they’re not honest about their IBIS. I don’t believe the A1 is 5.5 stops.
Let's see what comes out. It's not so much the specs, but how everything works together. The competition is strong. I am sure they will deliver something good.
This is basically also what i want in my A1: 1)pre-capture 2)flip-out screen 3)better viewfinder when focusing 4)faster card read/write 4) more ergonomic body
If the cost to upgrade is not too high i will definitely get one.

The big issue is the price. If it were $5500, great deal. More than $6500? No way.
We are over sensitive to price increases these days. I hope Sony does the right thing.
@ I don’t know that we are in this case. Feature wise, the A1 is closest to the Z8 and R5II. But it’s significantly more expensive than both of them. The new one being even higher is pretty silly.

sony is pushing CF express type A. zero chance of getting anything different.
Unfortunately, for some, the A1 does not need a major update. It has led the way for nearly 5 years now. They give users what they want instead of telling them what they need. It's as simple as that.

Except . . . for the AF. Most Sony cameras have had a vastly better AF system than the current a1 for a couple years now -- even my lowly a7Cii. But surely Sony is installing that system in the a1ii. Right, Sony?
It needs the latest AI and autofocus features and 8K 60 would put it back at the top of the hill again.
I bought an A1 in mint condition (2800 shots) just this April for €4000 (£3320). These specs won’t see me selling and upgrading to the Mark II upon launch. Maybe later.

Yep. Every new camera brings something new. We continue to innovate and move this field forward.
Not a video fan (sorry Simon), but Sony's best photocentric camera is the A7R5 and when and if they upgrade someday, that is when I will change from Canon to Sony. Unless of course Canon remembers what brought them to where they are.
The a7R6 might be on the refresh for 2025... ;)

Does pre capture work if you are using back button focus
Sony should just reuse the rear screens seen on ILCE-77M2K AND A99II. Not only because of the flexibility, resolution and size, but because the new screens are dim as piss.
The a7R5 screen is the most desired screen on the market. I wish I had that screen.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker it still flips to a side. I'm OK with a Full HD bright vari angle screen like that on my A77II, than a 720p screen with a quarter of the brightness that only flips to a side hanging from a straw thin hinge. And A7RV screen might be better than that in the A77II, but I doubt it will be as ergonomic.
The flip out to the back is helpful when shooting with telephoto lenses. Flip to the side is't helpful in that situation.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker it's more about lining the shots and stuff like that, precision and looking at the screen without looking like you are sideways. Sony Alpha A77II and A99II are the greatest cameras Sony ever did. Sure, new Mirrorless cameras deliver objectively more quality and features, but the user experience is worse. Many of the "photographers" that review Sony Mirrorless cameras never had an A mount camera in their hand. Heck, they still don't know that CCD JPEGs have 14 stops of DR while CMOS uncompressed raw show the same.
Sony's body never goes out, lol. They still produce the A7iii or A7c. Once in the market, a Sony camera never leaves the market.
They do have a very busy product line up. Reminds me of Apple in 1997. Fewer models makes more sense - less confusing to the consumer and more economies of scale for manufacturing.
So little no visible upgrades then?. I swear the camera makers have been taking serious notes from apple over the past couple of decades lol.
The A1 II still souinds overpriced. Does it have animal eye AF in video, which the original A1 lacked?
It's been fairly widely said (from non-sony sources) that the $25K sony burano uses the same sensor as the a1. With the upgrading of CF-A to type 4, that means that any codec that the burano has (writing to the older CF-B version 2 cards) could also run in an A1m2.
A better example is the a7S3 - they came 20 cameras out of that sensor...
Don't expect straight line acceleration in speed. CFA is a small card so I would not expect speeds to double. Either way, it will provide a nice improvement.
So nothing really special but an update to the body design for the A1 Mark 2

Good point, but the A1 is more of a Z9 competitor... but still, the R52 does clobber the A1 in specs. It will depend on where they put the upgrades These specs give little hint as to what has been beefed up.

There you go! Being first is one thing, but being first with a sentence to two, even if it is a catchphrase like "catchphrase" clearly wins especially if it catches an error or two ;)
I guess this will also be the best autofocus camera that can shoot Blackmagic RAW if Sony gives it the ability to do so. Maybe the AII is something I should consider being a video shooter.

Skipped the A1 because I didnt think it was worth the price and I will be skipping this for the same reason if these rumors are true.

If these specs are true, seems similar as the R1 vs the R3 controversy; more like an A9 1.5 than an A9ii. Hard to image many people with the A9 upgrading to the A9ii for such upgrades (if the rumor-specs are true).
We might be on the edge of things slowing down. Sony lead innovation for a few years, but started slowing down in 2020. The R1 and R3 are slowing down too, but they give a hint to what matters in speed and autofocus intelligence.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I disagree with you saying that Sony has been leading the way, and I wish you and other UA-camrs would stop saying that and here's why. Sony hasn't really revolutionized anything (neither has Canon nor Nikon), if we are talking about sensor tech, all of them fall short and all of the sensors in a dSLR were just as good for photography (that includes all of these high megapixel sensors that have been around in dSLR's for years). If we are talking Phase detect AF, Canon had that in a 2009's 7D mark I with face detection during live view mode from every corner of the sensor and in mirrored photography mode it had 19 af points all cross types. If we are talking global shutter, Canon did that in 2016 with the c700 GS, if we are talking back screens literally every brand is ahead of Sony (with the a9 III being the only exception). If we are talking view finder, I guess that's the only area we can honestly say Sony is leading the way! because honestly. out of all the other things. They just release a bunch of cameras and see which ones stick while never lowering the prices of the older models, limiting 3rd party lens manufacturers one higher end models and honestly NOT giving higher end models an update! so maybe that will be the story of this A1 Mark II! better back screen, AI chip for autofocus so it's at least on par with the A7RV, Better color science, and actually giving A1 users updates (because that would be huge to support photographers spending $6,500+ on a camera). but honestly... Sony isn't leading the way in innovation! the most innovated ideas that Sony has had was mirrorless in 2013 and the FX3/FX30 (and honestly, DJI is doing the best job innovating video cameras for consumers at the moment) all other "ideas" could have been implemented in a dSLR or have been implemented in a DSLR.

It does. But keep in mind the R52 seems a better deal than the R1 on paper too, but the R1 is engineered for a completely difference set of scenarios where the R52 van't compete. I would hope sony has done the same in the A1 II...
Agreed. I've been shopping Sony a1 vs. Canon R5 for a couple years now. If Sony had ever dropped the price of the a1 by a reasonable amount, I would have likely changed systems. But they didn't. The R5ii is a tremendous bargain by comparison.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker The only area where I see the R1 is designed to compete where the R5 Mk2 is not is in low-light or higher throughput photography where a lower resolution sensor (24 MP vs. 45 MP) is important. Frankly, I am glad that Canon made the differential unlike Nikon with the Z9/Z8. Sony made a similar distinction with the A1 vs A9.

So let me get this stright , the A1 used to be the flasgship , then they put a new AI chip in the A7R V , which the new A II get now 3 years later? (maybe with some tweaks) , still going to be a powerhouse but a bit dull ...

I cannot for the life of me stop saying A9 II. but its not just me, as Profusion, even the Sony guy got mixed up with the different names ;) We need camera names like the Tony, Alice, Sally. We should name cameras like they name hurricanes. In fact Hurricane would be a good camera name.

Issue why they cant deliver 8k60 is due to no RAW like all other has.
R52 can deliver 8K raw in Intra and Long got. Raw isn't needed for 8K60
it does even in 8k60 in Non raw format? Checking the canon site now and it dosent say that 8k DCI or UHD does 60fps, max 29,97
Only the RAW that has it on the list there atleast
From what Andrea says, the A1 II doesn't have 8K30, but I'd wait until we get the final announcement before we know for sure. I'd be surprised if it doesn't do that.

I've been tempted by the a1 since it first came out, but the price has always given me pause. Sony has always held the line on the a1's price. They must be satisfied with the relatively lower volume, relatively higher profit per unit at that price point. The closest competitor to the a1 is the Canon R5ii. Sony pricing makes the R5ii look like a real bargain!
You are right on. Sony may not sell as many cameras as Canon, but they make up with it by selling a lot of high-end cameras. I'm surprised Nikon is down the list at #3, I believe. As a Nikon F2 shooter from the 80s, I can't believe they have fallen while Sony has been killing it. With so much emphasis on video, Sony has made strides with their ZV line of video centric cameras. Kids love them. I see Sony eventually overtaking Canon as top seller, but in a shrinking market. Hope cameras become more of a thing since cell phones took over.
